Book 2: Two Victims

My Review

This is book 2 in the DCI Rachel King series set in Manchester.  We first met Rachel and her team in Next Victim which was a brilliant introduction to the series.

Rachel’s domestic life adds an interesting vein to the series as does her past.  Divorced (with her ex husband living next door), Rachel is trying to juggle a demanding career with the problems that come with bringing up 2 teenage girls.  Megan is at university and that brings its own issues whereas Mia is still at school., suffering from Type 1 diabetes and also nearly losing her life in a kidnapping it is understandable that both Rachel and Megan are protective of her.

The book itself is fast-paced with the suspense beginning on the first page and building all the way through.  There are several things going on the keep the reader totally engrossed in the story.

The body of a young woman is found in a ditch.  She has been shot and while forensics are searching for clues another body is found, this one a teenage girl.  To add to the issues faced by Rachel and her team the bodies are on land being developed by Jed McAteer.  Jed is a loveable rogue from Rachel’s university days who keeps popping up where he isn’t wanted.  Rachel and Jed share a secret, one that could destroy Rachel’s life and career.

As the team begin investigating they uncover more wrongdoings and a DCI from another station starts to muscle in on the action.  People trafficking, sex slaves and worse are all thrown into the mix. As cases become entwined can Rachel hold on to her suspect and find justice for the dead?

This is a twisty turny book that had me hooked at the very first page and kept giving all the way to the totally unexpected ending.  An absolutely brilliant read.  I cant wait for the next book in this series.

I’m one of the ‘baby boomer’ generation. I was born in Edinburgh to an English father and Scottish mother. My father was from the North West of England and this was where the family settled.
I know the area well, both the good and the bad, and so I set my books here. Sitting between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills, it offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein. I always planned to write crime novels — to create the characters in my books. Since my retirement from a busy teaching job in FE, this is what I’ve done — almost to exclusion of anything else!
I have a grown-up family and five grandchildren. They see me as something of an eccentric — always on my laptop writing away. Writing is something of a second career and, despite having a bus pass, keeps me busy, young and tuned in the world as it currently is.

THE BLOOD ON MY HANDS by Shannon O’Leary #truecrime #bookreview #autobiography

Today as a change I am reviewing a True Crime non-fiction book. This is an autobiography by Shannon O’Leary set in the Outbacks of Australia in the 1960/70’s. It is not for the faint-hearted it makes for a difficult read in places but this is a true story and for that reason I kept reading. It is a very eye opening story that I am pleased to have had the opportunity to read.

The Blood on My Hands: An AutobiographyThe Blood on My Hands: An Autobiography by Shannon O’Leary

Available from AMAZON

Goodreads link

Set in 1960s and ’70s Australia, “The Blood on My Hands” is the dramatic tale of Shannon O’Leary’s childhood years. O’Leary grew up under the shadow of horrific domestic violence, sexual and physical abuse, and serial murder. Her story is one of courageous resilience in the face of unimaginable horrors.

The responses of those whom O’Leary and her immediate family reach out to for help are almost as disturbing as the crimes of her violent father. Relatives are afraid to bring disgrace to the family’s good name, nuns condemn the child’s objections as disobedience and noncompliance, and laws at the time prevent the police from interfering unless someone is killed.

“The Blood on My Hands” is a heartbreaking-yet riveting-narrative of a childhood spent in pain and terror, betrayed by the people who are supposed to provide safety and understanding, and the strength and courage it takes, not just to survive and escape, but to flourish and thrive.

My Review

This is an autobiography based in the outbacks of Australia and tells the story of the life of Shannon O’Leary.

Shannon had a traumatic life living in poverty with a father who had a severe personality disorder she sees and suffers things that no child should. The main thing that stands out is Shannon’s love for her mother and that is reciprocated in full. The females support each other through thick and thin.

I am not familiar with the Australian culture so in part I found some of the book very hard to accept. However, I think we have to consider the vastness of the Australian Outbacks. How can these things happen and continue to happen while nobody takes any action didn’t sit well with me but this is a true story. A heart-breaking one.

What does come accross very successfully is a person’s determination to survive. The constant hope that one day things will get better. Shannon’s coping mechanisms make for very engaging reading it is eye opening how, even at a young age, she managed to find ways to focus her mind away from what was happening to her.

A very good read that opened my mind to the possibility that if this was going on in Australia 50-60 years ago then maybe it was happening here too – maybe it still is.

Thank you to Book Publicity Services and the author for the digital copy of this book. This is my unbiased review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

BLOG TOUR – Nowhere to Hide (Inspector Drake #7) by Stephen Puleston #mystery #detective #crimefiction @stephenpuleston

Today is my turn on the Blog Tour for NOWHERE TO HIDE by Stephen Puleston.  This is book 7 in the brilliant Inspector Drake series.  The series gets better book by book and this one will not disappoint it is a gripping page turner full of twists and turns.

Nowhere to Hide coverNowhere to Hide (Inspector Drake #7) by Stephen Puleston

Available from AMAZON

Goodreads link

A murdered mother… A failing police force…A detective looking for justice.

When drug addict Dawn Piper is found dead in her own home, her neighbours are far from surprised. Dawn’s habit led her to mix with some dangerous people. But this quiet mother of one was small fry …would anyone want Dawn dead?

Inspector Drake knows there is more to Dawn’s murder than a simple drug deal gone wrong. As he digs deeper, he discovers that Dawn hoped to clean up the streets of her community that are being overrun by drugs and the dangerous County Lines gangs that sell them. And it cost her her life. Have the police force failed the community they serve?

Drake is used to the murky world of organised crime groups. He knows the dirty games they play to evade arrest. But in his toughest case to date Drake is determined to make the guilty pay.

This time, they will have nowhere to hide”

My Review

Inspector Drake is back and this time he is out to obtain justice for the people society has let down.

The body of a young woman is found in her home but that is not where she was killed.  Drake and his team have the difficult task of finding out why she was murdered and who killed her.  As an ex addict (or is she) she has mixed with the underworld of drugs and violence but even so a life has been lost and a young boy motherless so Drake is determined to get answers.  2 other girls go missing while in the care of the state.  Are the 2 cases linked or separate?  Either way Drake will see justice is done.

Drake has struggled with life.  He has serious OCD and has worked to keep it under control but it cost him his marriage.  But now he has Annie and in addition to a very demanding job he is working hard to make the relationship work.  He also has to cope with upcoming changes at work as the superior officer he has developed an effective relationship with moves on Drake has to start again with somebody new.

As the team dive in to the investigation Drake finds that someone is out to scare him off.  As the people who he cares about are put at risk can he unravel the clues before someone gets seriously hurt?

This is a steady paced mystery that gets into the nitty gritty of detective work.  We follow the team in looking for clues where there are very few and round many twists and turns making it a very engaging read that is perfect for police procedural fans.

Biography

I write crime fiction based in Wales and about Wales. The rural landscape of north Wales provides the backdrop to the Inspector Drake novels. And Cardiff the capital of Wales provides the setting for the Inspector Marco novels set in a modern urban environment.

I love the novels of Raymond Chandler, Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, Henning Mankell, Val McDermid – the list could go on! And I enjoy watching detective series on the television the recent Hinterland series based near Aberystwyth in Wales was great. One of my favourites is the French series Spiral but The Bridge and Broadchurch and the Rebus series with Ken Stott and Kenneth Branagh in Wallander are great too.

I have been on writing courses at the Welsh Writers Centre in Llanystymdwy, North Wales tutored by Matt Whyman and Marcus Sedgwick as well as crime writing courses with Peter Robinson and Andrew Taylor at the Scottish Writers centre.

I was born in Anglesey an island off the north Wales coast and after leaving school in Holyhead I went to University in London before training as a solicitor/lawyer. I practised in a small family business doing criminal work in the magistrates and crown courts, divorce and family work.

I still live on Anglesey, North Wales near the beach and the mountains of Snowdonia

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

As is usual in Joy Ellis’ novels, the story grabs hold of the reader and won’t let go. Work and food are off the menu until the reader reaches the last page and then there is the dreadful disappointment of knowing that the book is finished and that the reader will have to wait for the next book. As usual with small villages, the residents are, in turn, quirky, secretive except when they aren’t, and on the whole, lends not only credibility to the story, but some humor as well. There are plenty of suspects and twists and turns that lead to an incredible ending.  Read more here

The Word is Out

This story is full of the wonderful characters that have grown to be so popular as the series has progressed and much of this is due to how warm and human they are. The plot is clever and beautifully plotted, and draws the reader through a dark trail of clues and suspects to the final exciting chapters as the culprit is revealed in an ending that still has a few surprises.

I enjoyed the mix of historical detail, professional police work and personal relationships that the book contained. Joy Ellis uses a lot of dialogue to forward the plot developments rather than long descriptions: this has the effect of making the characters more prominent and developed. Read more here

Throughout the book there are lots of tantalising clues as to who is doing it, but also lots of little red herrings, making it tricky to work out exactly what is happening. Do you love addictive detective mysteries? Then try this book by a multiple #1 best-selling author now. You won’t be able to put it down. It’s a totally enthralling read.

A SERIAL KILLER ON A POISONOUS MISSION PUSHES NIKKI AND HER TEAM TO BREAKING POINT

Revellers are flocking into Greenborough for the yearly Dark Greenborough Festival, a three-day event celebrating local folklore, superstition and the darker side of life.

What the public doesn’t know is that there has been a warning sent to the police, saying that Greenborough will be a very dangerous place this year. The anonymous letter ends with the Latin phrase, Mors certa, hora incerta: Death is certain, the hour uncertain.

DI Nikki Galena and her team soon discover this is no hoax, as people start dying from what appears to be alcoholic poisoning. Things rapidly escalate, and as the deaths get more horrific, Nikki realises they have a serial killer in their midst.

A NIGHTMARE HUNT FOR A KILLER DURING THEIR BUSIEST TIME OF THE YEAR.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the heart-stopping ending.

This is book ten of the international best-selling books featuring Nikki Galena.

THE DETECTIVE
DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on criminals but fiercely loyal to her team.

HER PARTNER
DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has a daughter and an ex-wife who wants his attention.

THE SETTING
The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

My Review

Ahhh book 10.  Settling down to read a Nikki Galena book is like having a catch up with a dear friend.

The character is sheer brilliance, feisty, caring, resourceful and unique.  I have read all this series (well I have read every book Joy Ellis has written) and thought I knew all there was to know about Nikki but while reading this I realised the character still has plenty more to give.

Her partner, Joseph Easton, is the perfect balance to Nikki.  He is calm, rational and sensitive.  But, like with Nikki, there is more to learn about his character.  Emotionally damaged by his military past Joseph sometimes has difficulty holding it all together.  His determination to protect the people he loves has no boundaries.

Then there is the story, Dark Greenborough!  The title of this book is probably the most perfect title I have seen in a long time, Darkness on the Fens, it is that alright.  Someone is committing heinous murders.  Victims are suffering agonising deaths and nobody can help just stand there and watch the suffering.  On its own this would be bad enough but it is Dark Greenborough weekend and the area is full of strangers dressed as evil characters from the past.  The perfect cover for a murderer.  Nikki and her team are up against it even with the help of Morgan and Connor the clues are very elusive.  Can this maniac be stopped?

This is a fast-paced, adrenaline pumping read.  Joy Ellis at her very best.  I started turning the pages and couldn’t stop savouring every page and wondering what will happen next all the way to the explosive ending.  WOW!  The best Joy Ellis book yet.  Yes I know I always say that but it is always true this author gets better book by book and I hope she has plenty more to give.

5 Golden stars from me.

“I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the sixties and seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!

And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and our four Springer spaniels. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I write full time, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; I find I have an in-house consultant on hand to make sure that the police and judicial procedure is correct. She also makes very good tea! I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!

This is book 3 in the Maddie Ives series.

The adrenaline starts pumping at the beginning when a child covered in blood walks in front of a car.  Quite where this fits into the story isn’t clear until much later on.

Harry is dealing with some personal issues that give the reader a lot more insight into the character.  The fatal accident that cost his wife her life comes back to haunt him and sees Harry struggling between right and wrong especially when his daughter’s mental health is thrown into the mix.

Then there is the story which is complicated and it is this complexity that causes so many problems for the investigation.  No clues and something dark and evil is going on.  Can Maddie and Harry get a handle on what is actually going on before more people die?

This is an intriguing book that keeps the reader turning pages as we join Maddie and Harry in trying to work out what is going on, who is behind it and why.

Another great story.

Temple uncovers a tangled web of deceit, betrayal and blackmail which leads him to a depraved undercover world.

CAN DETECTIVE TEMPLE CATCH THE KILLER BEFORE HIS OWN LIFE FALLS APART?

My Review

Deborah Lucy is a new author to Joffe Books publishers and also to me so I was interested to read the books which sounded very good.

Greta is married to Maxwell but neither are faithful and the story begins with Greta being tied to the bed as part of a sex game.  She is later found dead by her cleaner.

Detective Temple is SIO of the case but his life is in crisis and his superior officer has an axe to grind with Temple which means Temple is not only under pressure to crack the case he also has to do it knowing that his every action is being scrutinised and criticised from above.  This adds to the stress.  He also has something others want, something he shouldn’t have but he cant let them have it either and his family are threatened.

With all this going on and seemingly everyone out to get him can Temple hold it all together and solve the case?

I like Temple he is a flawed character but a realistic and interesting one.  We learn about him gradually along the course of the book.  He is leading a team but it isn’t really a team because as well as being watched from above he also has people on his team who would love him to slip up.

This is a very intriguing book it moves along steadily and the reader is involved every step of the way along the twists, turns and dead ends of a very complex case.  Even right up to the very end the story still has more to give as the conclusion is a real shock.

A very good read that I would recommend to readers who like Police Procedurals.

My Review

This is book 2 in the Detective Temple series by Deborah Lucy and although it works very well as stand alone it would be better to read the series in sequence as more detail of events referred to in this book is given.

Temple is in the bad books with his superiors.  He is under investigation by IPC following the death of a young man and has also been screwed over by his DCI and also a member of his team.  He has been banished to work alone investigating missing persons.

He also has big personal issues.  A child turned up who is the result of a short fling many years ago.  Left motherless Ben only has Temple to care for him and this has destroyed what was left of his fragile marriage to Leigh.  He has had to choose between his daughter and his son and since the alternative for Ben is life in care Temple has stepped up to the plate and committed himself to caring for Ben.

As Temple begins investigating missing persons his first case is China, a teenager, but there is a problem.  Is she really missing?  Her friend says so her mother and brother say no she isn’t missing.  Temple suspects teenagers are being used to run drugs and sets about trying to find out what is going on.  But he has to do it alone.

This book moves at a faster pace than book 1 and is a really gripping storyline that I found difficult to put down.  Full of twists and turns it is a book that will appeal to readers of Police Procedurals.

Sassy Redhead Book Reviews

I liked the plot of the story and the characters worked very well together. I enjoyed the suspense and the unfolding of the story and the crime. It was perfectly paced and the way that the plot unfolded and showed who the murderer was kept me wondering until almost the end of the book. Read more here

Debbie Hipster

It’s full of suspense and I was full of wanting to save the person, but then thinking they kind of deserved it too. I switched from wanting them caught to wanting them to get away, so many times. My head was playing an internal tennis match.  Read more here

Linda Strong Book Reviews

There’s lots of action, well paced suspense from beginning to end. There is a slight cliff hanger still to be solved in a future book. Suspects abound and it seems like everyone has a secret…some darker than others.  Read more here

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

I’m not giving away any more of the story, so you will need to read it to get the results of the investigations but I will say that the action is continuous and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The characters are all believable and I simply couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait for the next one.  Read more here

Ginger Book Geek

‘Best Served Cold’ is superbly written.  Pat Adams-Wright has one of those writing styles that is easy to get along with and easy to get used to.  She grabs the reader’s attention from the start with an incident that is so shocking and horrific that it will stay fresh in that reader’s mind for a long time to come.   Read more here

Sharon Rimmelzwaan

I will not let any details go, read it to discover the tale skillfully woven together by Pat! Kept me reading well into the night! I thought the characters where great and the development of said characters makes me think we may have at least a follow up, well I for one, will be looking for it! Job well done! Read more here

On The Shelf Reviews

I really liked Kirsty. She’s clever, intuitive and doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone especially her immediate superior Chief Superintendent Alison Fry who seem to butt heads at every opportunity.  Read more here

Black Books Blog

The storyline is very strong, and the action is continuous with us being given little bits of information from the murderer whilst the case is ongoing. I love when authors do this and it gives us as readers an insight into their mindset and we can try and work out what they are doing and why.  Read more here

Big Family Organised Chaos

Best Served Cold (DCI Kirsty Savidge #1) by Pat Adams-Wright

Available from AMAZON

DCI Kirsty Savidge and her team (MCTF – Major Crimes Task Force) are tasked with solving the murder of Avril Webb, the third member of a vicious, bullying school gang from twenty-five years ago, to be killed in a matter of weeks. Although two previous deaths are brought to her attention by pathologist Dr Benedict Aldredge (Benny),  they have been ruled a drowning and a gang-related murder in another district. Once Kirsty is aware of them, her detective instincts begin to kick-in, but because of the different Modi Operandi, she’s not sure she’ll be able to convince her superior Chief Superintendent Alison Fry, of a connection. The two women have history and cooperation is rarely a given.  However, during the interviews into Avril’s death the remaining members of the gang are adamant about a link between the deaths and press Kirsty to investigate further. This gives Kirsty a legitimate reason to ask for the other two cases to be reviewed although none of those in the higher echelons would want to hear the term ‘serial killer’.

Another murder occurs quite soon, again with a different MO. At the same time, Kirsty becomes aware she’s had an intruder in her home, but she and DS Danny Hewitt decide to put off any investigation until the current case is finished. Also, Chief Superintendent Fry appears to be having some personal problems when Kirsty spots her wrist wrapped in bandages and bruising on her neck. The inclement weather is also having an effect on the investigation, as some people are having to work from home, including Savidge and Fry, who finds herself stranded at Kirsty’s cottage because of the heavy snowfall. Fry brought news Kirsty could proceed with linking all the cases.  Members of the now covert group (nobody is aware in the present that these people are still linked and running false businesses for their leader, Chris Shaw), are now beginning to take care of their own security turning down protective custody. The police become suspicious.

Throughout, there is a running commentary from the murderer, about his methods and reasoning. Kirsty has her suspicions and is convinced one of the gang members is carrying out the murders. Only  when information from those badly bullied at school does the method of the killings fall into place. Background information on two of suspects is proving illusive. A failed copy-cat attack narrows Kirsty’s choice to one and covert surveillance is set-up. At the time of Avril’s funeral the next day, it’s revealed the man watching the suspect has been murdered and the suspect has disappeared. He’s gone to Plan B – murdering the rest of the gang at the funeral. He kills two more using sniper-fire, then escapes. At the airport he is apprehended and held at gunpoint by two armed response officers, but is then shot himself when one officer mistakes a remote-control for the handle of a gun. The suspect’s lap-top reveals all, in the form of two books so all questions can be answered at a meal supplied by the Chief Superintendent. At the end of the book we are left wondering whose Kirsty’s intruder was  and also who had leaked information to allow a copy-cat attack.

My Review

This is a very gripping book on many levels.  If you like detective books then you will love this one it gets into the nitty gritty of detective where there are no clues and the only way to make any progress is to keep trawling through paperwork looking for anything that may have been missed.  This makes for a very interesting book.  It may not be as fast paced at some but certainly kept the pages turning as I became totally engrossed in the story.

The balance of description and investigation is perfect there is enough well written description for the reader to envisage the scene but not enough to be ‘padding’.

Kirsty Savidge is DCI but is a very hands on one who likes to be out and about with her team.  Her superior is Alison and we soon learn the two women have history.  If I have a minor gripe it is that I would have liked some answers to questions about the two but hopefully there will be more to learn in future books.

I love the characters they are realistic and develop their unique characters well over the course of the book.  I particularly liked the way Kirsty encouraged Paul and gave him the opportunity to show his initiative and play an active part in the investigation despite him not being a permanent member of the team.

The story itself is very different as the investigation progresses the reader learns about the background to the murders which goes back to events over 20 years ago which makes the investigating even more difficult but it all works perfectly as the different strands eventually link together and the reader is taken on a twisty turny ride to the end of the story with many shocks along the way.

An excellent read and well worth the 5 stars.

Thank you to the author for the ARC this is my unbiased review
