Ward Zero: The Dead WardWard Zero: The Dead Ward by Linda Huber

Horror swept through her. Had she been buried alive?

On Sarah’s first visit to see her foster mother, Mim, in Brockburn General Hospital, she is sucked into a world that isn’t what it should be.
Someone is lying, someone is stealing. And someone is killing – but who? With a grieving child to take care of, as well as Mim, Sarah has to put family first. She doesn’t see where danger lies – until it’s too late.

If you think you’re safe in a hospital, think again.

My Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sarah arrives back in England to spend time with her Foster mum, Mim. However, this isn’t to be the relaxing quality time she is expecting. Mim is in hospital recovering from a knee operation. Circumstances see Mim offering a home to 11 year old Frankie and Sarah has the pair to care for.

What starts off as an easy women’s fiction read soon takes on a life of its own as a full blown Crime Thriller. A man is out to swindle old ladies out of their money so he can create a luxury home for himself. His determination to have what he feels he is entitled to whatever the cost push him to murder people who get in his way. But who is he?

With several suspects and many twists and turns the reader is left with a tangled web. The reasons and methods of the murder are clear but the killer is not.

The story is told from the perspective of Sarah and Caitlin and while the police are obviously in charge of the investigation they take a back seat in this book.

The characters develop well into complex individuals and are realistic. The story is believable and moves along at a fairly fast pace to keep the reader turning the pages.

I would have liked a different ending but it is what it is and it was still a very good read.

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

Gretta Mulrooney has a very easy-to-read style and her characters are magnificent. I particularly enjoyed the ‘bestie’ friend of Greg’s third wife, who comes across as a suffocating busy-body who was one of my prime candidates for the killer. I was wrong but I don’t mind admitting it!  Read more here

Oh my goodness, ‘Your Last Lie’ is one hell of a read and then some.  I was hooked on this story from the moment I picked the book up right up until the moment I closed the back cover.  For me, the story hits the ground running and maintains the pace throughout.  The author’s writing style certainly entices you into the book and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through the story.  That’s what happened to me anyway.  Read more here

BLOG TOUR – Locked Down (Locked Trilogy #3) by G. B. Williams #BookReview #NewRelease #crimefiction #detective @GailBWilliams

I am thrilled to have been invited on the Blog Tour for this final book in the Locked Trilogy. Locked Down is book 3 and is a real page-turner full of adrenaline pumping twists and turns.

Locked Down (Locked Trilogy #3)

Available from AMAZON

What DCI Piper dredges up when investigating the cold case of Terrence Whittaker’s disappearance is unexpected and unwelcome – especially when it links to a current missing persons case.

Charlie Bell’s only goal in life is ending the tyranny of the Mansel-Jones crime family.

While Ariadne Teddington recovers after a car crash, her missing brother’s case is reopened, and a past she has always struggled to deal with comes back to haunt her.

Finding the new lodger isn’t who she was expecting makes life a rollercoaster she can’t get off.

What will it take to get a criminal locked down for once and for all?
Can the present overcome the past?
And can any of them afford the price?

My Review

This is book 3 in the ‘Locked’ trilogy. They work well as stand-alone but you would get more enjoyment by reading them in sequence.

20 years ago Terry Whittaker went missing while his sister, Ariadne, was supposed to be watching him. It is the present day and Ariadne is at a seaside resort recovering from a bad car accident when Piper turns up. He is a face from a period she is trying to put out of her mind but when she finds out that he has been allocated to cold cases and is investigating the disappearance of her brother (and other children) she realises that her past is back to haunt her.

The nightmare gets worse when she returns home and finds out that her mother has taken in a lodger and that is another face from her past that she is trying to forget. Will she be able to move on with her life and return to the job she loves as a prison officer? It is not looking good for her.

When Piper is allocated to cold cases to keep him out of trouble he picks up the missing children case and pandoras box is well and truly open.

As the past and the present merge the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of epic proportions. The twists and turns leave you reeling and as the pace continues to increase the ending is an even bigger shock.

Complex characters that are scarily realistic, corruption, evil and danger interwoven with love and friendship all play their part in a book that grips you from the very first page and doesn’t let go until the end.

Absolutely brilliant read. 5 stars from me.

G. B. Williams Author Bio

I am a writer, a freelance editor, and I have the usual day job. What I normally write is crime fiction, and I have two series in development, one with an agent as I type this. I write novels, shorts and flash fiction. Very occasionally I’ll even pen a poem, but that really is only occasional. However that’s not all I write, and I’ve recently had some success with steam punk, paranormal prose, and, amazingly, poetry. This last I find a little odd, but there you go.

I was born in Kent and grew up in Tonbridge and now I live in Swansea.

If you want the general background to my life, I studied at a comprehensive, went to university for a term, but was on the wrong course, then I moved in with my sister for a couple of months after she’d relocated to Wales for work. After that I was supposed to go backpacking, only it never happened because I met a guy. The stories of the Christmas Works Do when we met include tales of the two girls seen kissing, an understandable mistake given the free-flowing alcohol and the fact that at the time his hair was longer than mine.

So I’m English, my husband’s Welsh, we got engaged in Ireland, we married in medieval costume and honeymooned in a tent moving around Scotland. After that, I got a degree in Business Administration, a degree I started eight months pregnant with my son and ended six months pregnant with my daughter while working full time. Never been any good at making my life easy.

Over my working career I’ve been made redundant four times, but rarely been without a job, and I’ve never really stopped writing, though I’ve had a few moments of swearing I’ll never put pen to paper again as the rejection slips have piled up.

When I’m not writing, I love to read. Am a fan of Lee Child, Simon Kernick, Stephen Leather and Peter Robinson, if you’re wondering these are in alphabetical order as I couldn’t rank them if I tried, they may all write crime fiction, but each has a different appeal. Other authors who appear on my shelves are Dean Koontz, Terry Pratchett, and David Eddings, and I’m not ashamed to admit I like read Mills and Boon every so often, now I know that’s generally sniggered as, but after a hard day in the office, sometimes it’s good to know on page one what’s going to happen by the time you get to ‘the end’.

So the day job changed, currently I’m doing a lot of risk calculation, which, when you think about it, isn’t a million miles away from what I do when I’m not in the day job, I write about crime, murders mostly. There’s something inordinately satisfying about having a bad day in the office and coming home to beat someone to death with a chair leg, in a purely literary sense of course. Actually, I’ve never done that in a book, perhaps I should.

I’ve always loved puzzles and that’s what crime fiction is, it’s a word puzzle, the trick is to see how long you can keep the reader guessing, which isn’t always easy. However the job of writing is a much easier one than the job of actually being an investigator, after all, I know where the bodies are buried, I wrote them there. So thank you to those with the tough job of actually finding the real murderers, my apologies that I sometimes have to play fast and loose with the rules you live by.

Mostly I’d also like to thank all the people who help me. Those who tell me their horror stories, give me ideas; who point out my typos and atrocious (yes I did have to use spell check for that one) spelling; that tell me when I’m being a moron. A special thanks has to go to Swansea Writers’ Circle who have been very supportive. And most of all, thank you to my family, who put up with me and keep me scribbling through the darkest hours. Couldn’t do it with out you.

My Review

This is book 3 in the ‘Life after Us’ series’ set far into a future where people rely on technology for all their wants and needs in the form of Alex, a whole new vision of a personal assistant.

An attempt has been made to take control of America. Vicki and Ambrose are caught up in the initial bombing at the airport. Ambrose was arriving for work and Vicki was seeing her fiancé, Will, off as he goes to work abroad. Initially it looks as though Will is killed in the mayhem but the reality is much, much worse.

As Ambrose and Vicki struggle to survive they are separated and the pregnant Vicki is captured by Will who has evolved into an evil man focussed on taking control of America. She pleads with Ambrose to save her and that is where we pick up the story with Daisy Song.

It is an intriguing journey as we follow 2 people determined to be together as they fight the many obstacles put in their way. There are several unlikely relationships that bring different dimensions to the story and make for gripping reading.

Although this is not a genre I usually read I absolutely love this series. I have devoured each book like a starving woman and I really hope there will be more.

My Review

This is book 6 in the Tyrone Swift series but the books work perfectly as stand alone.

A womanising pilot is found brutally murdered in his aeroplane. The suspects are many. Greg had spent his whole life riding roughshod over women and people. He is a selfish man with no regard for feelings of others. His mother, however, thinks he is an angel and employs Swift to search for his murderer as the police had failed.

Swift’s character grows in this series his daughter’s hearing problems and the difficult relationship with Nora mean he is walking on eggshells trying not to upset people. This case, however, is going to try him to the limit of his patience as everyone seems to have it in for him.

His girlfriend, Nora, I don’t much like I think she is a bad fit for Swift she is too moody and her trust issues mean that Swift is forever monitoring what he tells her. I like her even less after reading this book.

The case is a difficult one. As a pilot the victim travelled the world and Swift finds himself having to think far and wide to find leads to follow. The complexity of the case makes for intriguing reading. Maybe it isn’t as fast paced and adrenaline pumping as I would like but it has enough to hold the reader’s attention and keep the pages turning.

There are many twists and turns along the reading journey and the uncovering of the murderer came as a real curve ball towards the end of the book.

A good read. I am pretty annoyed I didn’t find out what happened to Havanna so I am hoping I don’t have long to wait for the next book.

THE RIVERBOAT MYSTERY by Faith Martin

Discover a new series of whodunits by million-selling author Faith Martin. These charming mysteries will have you scratching your head to work out who the murderer is.

“A wonderful protagonist.” Mystery Women

Meet Jenny Starling: travelling cook and reluctant amateur detective.

Please note this book was first published as “DYING FOR A CRUISE” under Faith Martin’s pen name JOYCE CATO.

Jenny Starling has a job on a luxury paddle steamer working for a wealthy businessman. All she has to do is cook for his small number of guests. But things quickly turn sour.

Then she discovers the body of one of the passengers in the store cupboard. Who wanted him dead and why?

Jenny will have to ignore many red herrings and follow the clues to get to the bottom of a complex and intriguing murder mystery.

This is the third of a series of enjoyable murder mysteries with a great cast of characters and baffling crimes which will keep you in suspense to the final page.

Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey, and J.R. Ellis.

JENNY STARLING
In her late twenties, Jenny Starling is an impressive woman. Physically, she stands at 6ft 1inch, and has shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes. Curvaceous and sexy, she’s a modern single woman, living the lifestyle that suits her – that of a travelling cook. Her famous (and now very rich) father, is a ‘celebrity’ cook, divorced from Jenny’s mother. Jenny drives a disreputable cherry-red van, and is happy travelling the country catering events and cooking great food. She is on a one-woman crusade to bring back ‘real’ food. And definitely doesn’t like having to divert her attention from achieving the perfect Dundee cake or creating a new sauce recipe by having to solve a murder. She finds crime very distracting, especially when there is chocolate to temper or pike to poach. Nevertheless, she is very good at reading people, and with a quick and agile brain, becomes very good at unmasking killers. And her always-undaunted sense of humour goes a long way in keeping her sane when all around her people are dropping like flies.

CAN YOU TRUST A KILLER TO HELP STOP A KILLER?

The police are stretched to breaking point with multiple copycat murders. And Matt and his girlfriend Liz will fight for everything they care about in a heart-stopping conclusion that will have you on the edge of your seat.

The Setting
England’s rural fenland is a strange place, with its never-ending fields, winding tracks, and long straight droves (the old livestock routes) that lead to nowhere. The lonely lanes are flanked either side by deep drainage ditches and are, for a good part of the year, filled with tall, whispering reeds. Closer to the Wash, high seabanks form a barrier between river and marsh, and the richly fertile soil of the drained land. But when the mists come down, as they so often do, perspective is destroyed and all sense of direction lost, and then the fens become a rather frightening place of mystery and danger. Somewhere that you do not want to be at night.

My Review

Well Joy Ellis has done it again! Another totally gripping page turner.

This is the sequel to BEWARE THE PAST in the first book we saw Matt Ballard up against evilness personified. It left him physically and emotionally shattered, one of his team with a life threatening injuries and someone close to him dead. So I was intrigued how Joy would build a book from the remains. I was far from disappointed this book just demonstrates what a talented author she is.

Matt’s retirement has been delayed as his replacement is tied up in court. He is just overseeing things and wrapping everything up when a case from his past returns to haunt him. Jeremy Reader killed 5 women in a slow, painful way and Matt was the one that caught him. He is in prison serving life but is apparently a reformed character. Matt doesn’t believe it but everyone else does. Unable to trust his gut instinct any more Matt goes along with the main feeling that he is a reformed character. Reader is about to marry Grace, a prison visitor. Grace appears to be a well adjusted woman so why would she want to marry a lifer?

When Grace arrives at the station with news of a copycat Matt is thrust straight into a nightmare. As the bodies stack up Matt and the team are struggling to find a lead even with the help of psychologists Laura and Sam.

Bryn takes a leading role in this book as he is left pretty much alone to investigate the murder of migrant workers with only a tattoo to link them. He is helped by Swifty, a uniformed officer and a new character. I loved to see Bryn grow wings and fly as his compassionate character and thoughtful nature help him gain the trust of a very untrusting community. That trust is key to solving the migrant murders.

This is a fast-paced read with many twists and turns as we follow the team down multiple ‘dead’ ends until towards the end when finally, they find some leads. The clues lead the team in a direction nobody expected and once again Matt finds his past coming back, ot to haunt him but to threaten his life and the lives of people he cares about.

The characters are complex and realistic and I was thrilled to learn of some new psychological conditions that I was previously unaware of. It was also interesting to learn a little of the culture and lives of the migrant community. I have much admiration for their ability to survive abuse and continually struggle to live in difficult circumstances.

An absolutely brilliant read. 5 golden stars from me.

JOY ELLIS – Author Bio

“I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the sixties and seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!
And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and our two second generation Springer spaniels. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I can, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre was suddenly clear. I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!”

DISCOVER ONE OF THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE DETECTIVES

THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She’s got tough on the criminals she believes did this to her.

HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

My Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

CRIME ON THE FENS
I began reading this series with Buried on the Fens so I can confirm it work well as stand alone. It has always been in my plans to go back to the beginning and I am thrilled that I have finally found a gap in my reading commitments to do this.

Nikki Galena is star of the show. A feisty woman who has a lot of pain in her life which has caused her to hate drugs with a passion. At the beginning she is very much a one woman band and has had several partners running for the hills. She is forced to work with Joseph Easter a man who is good where she is bad. Is it a match made in heaven or hell? I couldn’t wait to find out.

2 young women disappear one is a dedicated student and the other the daughter of a criminal. Not just any criminal though, one that is ‘friends’ with Nikki Galena. The Police are working with the underworld to find these women in a story that has humour, tears and lots of edge-of-your-seat thrills and spills.

This is an excellent book in which we watch characters grow and develop as the team works together to untangle the web of lies.

I expect nothing less from Joy Ellis than a story that takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotions which keeps the pages turning all the way to the end. Brilliant read!

SHADOW OVER THE FENS
This is book 2 of the Nikki Galena series.

Nikki is finally coming to terms with the trauma of what happened to Hannah and is in the process of moving back to Cloud Fen when her neighbour commits suicide in front of a group of children. What could have caused him to act in a way that was so uncharacteristic of him? This is a question that Nikki must find the answer to.

Joseph is recovering from his injuries and has just returned to work when a nemesis from his past appears. Men who look like this man turn up dead and suspicion is pointed at Joseph.

What is going on and are there any links between the 2 cases. As Nikki tries to find clues to the motive for the murders she finds herself up against secrets from many years ago.

This is a very intriguing and complex story that keeps the reader engrossed in the story through a roller coaster ride of twist and turns all the way to the shocking conclusion.

We learn a lot more about the characters in this book as the story unfolds. I love the characters that make up Nikki’s team they are complex and realistic.

I am looking forward to reading more in this series.

An excellent read and well worth the 5 stars.

HUNTED ON THE FENS
This is book 3 in the ‘Fens’ series by Joy Ellis. The suspense starts at the beginning and continues right to the end.

Joseph is on high alert when he smells smoke and springs into action in time to warn Nikki her garage is on fire. That is only the beginning of a chain of events that has the whole of her team watching each other’s backs.

Nikki is still reeling from the death of her daughter and now she feels responsible for a young officer losing his life and another badly injured. Someone is after revenge but who and why is the question everyone is asking.

In addition they are trying to solve a murder where a woman is found dead in a locked room with state of the art security. The assassin is killed in a road accident leaving no clues and certainly no answers just more questions.

We learn more about the characters and their pasts in this book as well as following a complex case with multiple events that create an adrenaline pumping read that had me turning page after page.

Another gripping addition to a brilliant series with a totally unexpected ending – 5 golden stars from me
