GOODBYE 2018

As the year draws to a close it is time to reflect.

At the beginning of 2018 I had hopes and dreams. Dad was recovering from his hip operation, I was working out my notice at my day job and about to start a new career focussing on books that would enable me to work virtually and thereby spend more time with Dad. A big part of that was a contract with Bloodhound Books as Operations Executive. Oh yes, I had life all planned out.

Unfortunately, fate had other ideas and it became clear by the end of January that despite all the effort it wasn’t to be. Dad passed away, unexpectedly, on 2nd February (the 7th anniversary of Mum’s death). Devastated didnt even start to explain it but unfortunately it coincided with a lot of blogger abuse that was prevalent on Social Media at that time. A Facebook glich resulted in Bloodhound terminating my contract and my life was shattered.

But where there is hate there is also a lot of love and I would like to say a very big thank you to all the people who supported me in the darkest time of my life. In particular the CRAZIES you know who you are and love each and every one of you. Junction Publishing & Joffe Books for trusting in me and my awesome friend Stewart Giles: we both lost our Dad’s and we both got fired but we survived and together we make a winning team. In addition my thanks go to all my other Social Media friends. I am not the only one to have suffered loss this year many of my online friends have also and my thoughts are with you all.

I also celebrated my 60th birthday and the messages, cards, presents, parties and everything else that went with it was absolutely amazing so a big thank you goes to my family and friends. I also ticked another item off my bucket list with a helicopter ride over the Derbyshire Dams, an awesome experience that I will never forget. Thank you to my wonderful children for that I love you all to the moon and back.

So I move on to 2019 with more hopes and dreams there will be plenty more Blog Tours and parties and we also welcome our new puppy into our little family. Mauri (named after Dad whose name was Maurice) will be coming home on 14th January to join Sheba.

So my end of year message is: you have to experience the bad times to really appreciate the good ones. I hope 2019 brings you all happiness and love. xx

Picks of 2018

It is usual for Bloggers to post their pick of the books they have read in 2018 and usually I do this too. This year I have read 100 books and some I have loved some not so much but I tend not to read books if I am not getting on with them so by default I like all 100 of the books I read this year.

Off the top of my head I reckon I really loved about 25% loved another 25% and liked/loved the rest so my picks of 2018 are all the books on the link below. Some I liked and others loved some I loved and others liked but what each and every one of these books have in common is the amount of blood, sweat and tears that have gone in to them. Each book is months of work, research, brainstorming putting it all together, rewriting and when they get to The End and submit it then the work really starts as the edits come in and titles and book covers have to be chosen. It is a long road with hours and hours of work.

So instead of reading my picks of 2018 have a look through these 100 books and spare a thought for the part of the author that has gone into them because with each book they give a little of themselves and with each book they give us readers hours of enjoyment.

Detective Inspector Nikki Galena
Nikki is a brave, honest and dedicated police officer who started at the bottom and clawed her way up through the ranks. Although once a loner, hardened by personal tragedy and some of the terrible cases that she has dealt with, the formation of a new, close-knit team has given her drive and enthusiasm.

Set in the Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

 My Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is book 2 of the Nikki Galena series.

Nikki is finally coming to terms with the trauma of what happened to Hannah and is in the process of moving back to Cloud Fen when her neighbour commits suicide in front of a group of children. What could have caused him to act in a way that was so uncharacteristic of him? This is a question that Nikki must find the answer to.

Joseph is recovering from his injuries and has just returned to work when a nemesis from his past appears. Men who look like this man turn up dead and suspicion is pointed at Joseph.

What is going on and are there any links between the 2 cases. As Nikki tries to find clues to the motive for the murders she finds herself up against secrets from many years ago.

This is a very intriguing and complex story that keeps the reader engrossed in the story through a roller coaster ride of twist and turns all the way to the shocking conclusion.

We learn a lot more about the characters in this book as the story unfolds. I love the characters that make up Nikki’s team they are complex and realistic.

I am looking forward to reading more in this series.

An excellent read and well worth the 5 stars.

The Girls Are Gone by Michael Brodkorb and Allison Mann #truecrime

The Girls Are GoneThe Girls Are Gone by Michael Brodkorb

Available from Amazon UK

On the evening of April 19, 2013, Samantha and Gianna Rucki disappeared. Two of five children born to David Rucki and Sandra Grazzini-Rucki, the teenage sisters vanished in the midst of their parents’ divorce.

The girls’ father, David Rucki, worked tirelessly with law enforcement to search day and night for his two missing daughters, following every lead while raising three remaining children at home. Their mother, Sandra Grazzini-Rucki, used her newfound freedom to vacation around the world, abandoning her children. And as the investigation intensified, catching the attention of the media, Sandra also disappeared.

The Girls Are Gone is the true story of two sisters who went missing, the father who kept searching, and the adults who conspired to keep the truth hidden.

My Review

Thank you to Book Publicity Services for the review copy of this book. This is my unbiased review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I usually read Fiction in particular Crime Fiction although I have read True Crime in the past. However, I was unsure what to expect from this book but it wasn’t anything like I was expecting.

Sandra and David have a normal family life with 5 children. They are well off financially and everything in their lives is perfect. Or so David thought. Trust fund monies go missing and Sandra is spending more money than they have coming in. She provides a solution to their problems in the form of a paper divorce. David innocently signs the papers.

From that point his life will never be the same again. He finds he is divorced in all senses of the word and accused of abusing the children he loves with all his being. What follows is a long drawn out legal battle to regain custody of his children. The day all his children returned home to David’s care his 2 middle daughters go missing.

A long process to find his daughters begins with his estranged wife placing massive obstacles in the way and enlisting the help of various support groups and individuals to prevent the girls being found.

The general story is interesting however, the book contains a lot of court transcripts which I found hard going and difficult to read and digest. The large number of people involved in the case made it difficult to keep track of who was where.

It was an interesting and different read which made a change but I am not sure I would want to read anything similar again.

3.4 stars from me

What the Bloggers thought:

The Quiet Geordie

This is a solid start to the new series. The plot works very much of the formula of the Hillary Greene series, so if you enjoyed those you are likely to enjoy these. There are plenty of red herrings along the way. Read more here

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

The first in a new series by Faith Martin and one I have been waiting for since the Hillary Greene series finished. There is a new main character, Jenny Starling, a professional caterer to the super-rich, who will no doubt travel to many houses in many places so there is the possibility of so many murder mysteries.  Read more here

I knew that I had found another cracking series with a female lead that I couldn’t fail to warm to.  This book soon became addictive for me.  It isn’t a particularly long book and I seemed to race through it.  I was so focussed on the book, the mystery, the storylines and the characters that I didn’t notice just how quickly the pages were turning- it was almost as if they were turning themselves.  Read more here

Nicki’s book blog

I took to Jenny and her simplicity. Saying
things how they are and being truthful both with herself and others and not letting
those that thought they were above her treat her as such. She also has a crusade
to bring back real food- a woman of my own heart (and cooking!) I had to smile at
one of the police characters being Inspector Mollern- the name of a boat in a
certain Hillary Greene series.  Read more here

This is a murder mystery with a great cast of characters. There are an assortment of possible suspects, all with motives. There are a few surprises along the way. Next to Jenny, my favorite character is the cat. This is a kinder, gentler murder mystery and I really look forward to following Jenny on her further adventures.  Read more here

This mystery was told in a very unique fashion! While mainly told from the POV of Jenny the hired on travelling cook, as Jenny met new characters or as different things unfolded it would randomly flit to anther character’s POV so that you momentarily saw either Jenny or a situation out of those characters eyes. It was a very unique narration!  Read more here

THE BIRTHDAY MYSTERY by Faith Martin

Available from Amazon

Discover a new series of whodunits by million-selling author Faith Martin. These classic-style mysteries will have you scratching your head to work out who the murderer is. Meet Jenny Starling: travelling cook and reluctant amateur detective.

Please note this book was first published as “BIRTHDAYS CAN BE MURDER” under Faith Martin’s pen name JOYCE CATO.

Jenny Starling is catering the twenty-first birthday party of a pair of posh twins, Alicia and Justin.

But when she arrives at their parent’s country house, she is immediately met by the police. A young man has drowned in the pond. Was it an accident or murder?

Then just after midnight everyone gathers for a champagne toast. But one of the guests falls down dead.

The police are baffled and there is a whole party full of suspects. But when it comes to someone adding the extra ingredient of poison to her own precious recipes, Jenny isn’t going to take it lying down. She has a reputation to protect.

Jenny Starling won’t stop until the murderer is found.

This is the first of a series of enjoyable murder mysteries with a great cast of characters and baffling crimes which will keep you in suspense to the final page. Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey, and J.R. Ellis.

JENNY STARLING
In her late twenties, Jenny Starling is an impressive woman. Physically, she stands at 6ft 1inch, and has shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes. Curvaceous and sexy, she’s a modern single woman, living the lifestyle that suits her – that of a travelling cook. Her famous (and now very rich) father, is a ‘celebrity’ cook, divorced from Jenny’s mother. Jenny drives a disreputable cherry-red van, and is happy travelling the country catering events and cooking great food. She is on a one-woman crusade to bring back ‘real’ food. And definitely doesn’t like having to divert her attention from achieving the perfect Dundee cake or creating a new sauce recipe by having to solve a murder. She finds crime very distracting, especially when there is chocolate to temper or pike to poach. Nevertheless, she is very good at reading people, and with a quick and agile brain, becomes very good at unmasking killers. And her always-undaunted sense of humour goes a long way in keeping her sane when all around her people are dropping like flies.

FAITH MARTIN is the best-selling author of the DETECTIVE HILLARY GREENE mysteries, which have sold over 1 million copies globally in just over a year.

More JENNY STARLING mysteries coming soon. Join the Joffe Books mailing list to be the first to hear about the next in the series.

ADVENT BOOK BLOG 23 – Dec-2018 (1) – The Burning Men (Ray Paterson #3) by Steve Parker #crimefiction #detective #TeamJoffeBooks @mrparkerspen @joffebooks

Day 23 of my Advent Book Blog and Christmas is fast approaching. Today belongs to book 3 in a series I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE by a talented author who was recently snapped up by the awesome JOFFE BOOKS. If you like gritty, realistic detective stories with unique characters then you will love this series as much as I do

THE BURNING MEN (Detective Ray Paterson #3) by Steve Parker

Available from AMAZON

Discover a crime thriller full of shocking twists by one of the most exciting new authors you’ll read this year.

A MAN IS BURNT AT THE STAKE IN A LONDON PARK. HIS SMOULDERING CORPSE IS A MESSAGE OF THE MOST VIOLENT KIND.

The man burnt alive is Davey Caine. He is the heir to the criminal empire created by his father, William ‘Billy’ Caine. Billy is a notorious and violent gangster with total control of South East London. But he’s not the man he used to be and the sharks smell blood in the water.

Detectives Ray Paterson and Johnny Clocks must find the killer before Billy extracts his own brand of justice. They find themselves drawn ever deeper into London’s underworld.

The streets explode into violence and the body count rises. Men are shot and burned alive in a tit-for-tat power struggle between rival gangs.

Detectives Ray Paterson and Johnny Clocks find themselves trying to control men of extreme viciousness. Men who have no fear of the law and its consequences and who are unafraid to kill anyone who stands in their way — including police detectives.

Paterson is stunned when he’s offered the chance to stop the conflict dead in its tracks. If he ignores it, the mayhem continues. If he takes it, there will be a price to pay.

What he doesn’t know is that the price will come with hidden and devastating consequences.

ON THE STREETS OF LONDON, A SIMMERING GANG WAR IS ABOUT TO ERUPT WITH PATERSON AND CLOCKS CAUGHT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE.

This is the third in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth.

Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson is a young and (thanks to family money) wealthy womaniser, separated from his model wife and tipped to be the youngest ever commissioner of police. He knows he’s weak when it comes to practical policing and struggles to find a place among his peers, desperate to be a good policeman and not just a ‘climber’.

Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks is a foul-mouthed, working-class officer. He grew up surrounded by rogues and villains to become a first-class thief taker with the Met police. However, his childish attitude has short-circuited his career and he spends his days antagonising as many people as he can.

My Review

Firstly, thank you to Joffe Books for the advance digital copy of this book. This is my unbiased review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Paterson and Clocks are back so I settled down for a few hours of adrenaline pumping reading and I was not disappointed. Steve Parker is not for the faint-hearted but if you love the grit and gore of crime fiction then this is an author that is right up your street.

The story begins with a man being burned alive. He is soon revealed to be the son of a gangster and so begins a war to gain control of the London underworld. Paterson and Clocks are not amused and set out to bring an end to the violence by whatever means they see fit.

I do love this pair. They balance each other out perfectly and we get to know them a little more each book and they are balance by other team members who we also get to know more about.

Humour, corruption, drugs, violence, twists, turns and curve balls this book has it all. An absolutely brilliant read ticked all my boxes and I am now eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

What the bloggers thought:

Overall I loved this book, although it may be a bit gruesome for some people. The story had me hooked throughout as I tried to work out how the two of them would stop the murders. I also really like the chemistry between Paterson and Clocks, and they way they work together and bring the best out of each other is brilliant. Read more here

This story builds in momentum at every chapter with the two detectives pushing to the ultimate limit of the law and beyond. The story line was superb with an outcome that I didn’t guess, but I must admit that the ending tickled me in some twisted way. ADVENT BOOK BLOG 22 – Nov-2018 (2) – The Enigma (DS Smith & DC Harriet Taylor #1) by Stewart Giles #crimefiction #detective @stewartgiles

Advent Book Blog 22 and it is The Enigma by Stewart Giles in the limelight. This is the first in a stunning new series featuring both the detectives from Stewart’s 2 other series.  The two are brought together in one book that you won’t be able to put down.  Brilliant!!

The Enigma (DS Jason Smith & DC Harriet Taylor #1)

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new detective series featuring the detectives from both the series’ we know and love.

In Trotterdown, Cornwall a boat, The Enigma washes in to the harbour. The skipper is dead, and Harriet Taylor is brought in to investigate. But 1 dead body is not the only crime the team have to deal with.

Meanwhile, further up the coast in Whitby a boat washes up on the rocks just outside the harbour. Everyone on board is dead. Whitby Police are out of their depth, so DS Jason Smith is called in to help.

It soon becomes clear the cases are connected and the teams from York and Trotterdown settle down to work with each other.

This is a unique story with twist, turns and shocks all the way through making it an adrenaline pumping read you will not be able to put down.

My thoughts

This is the first in a new series featuring detectives from Stewart’s other series’; Harriet from the brilliant DC Harriet Taylor series set in Cornwall and DS Smith from the awesome Smith series set in York.

Now I am a BIG Stewart Giles fan I think the guy has real talent and each book is better than the last. I have had the pleasure of reading the whole Smith series back to back and I have also read the Harriet books so I was very excited to hear of this new series.

Although there are many murders this is not a particularly gory read the author has expertly managed to build in the revulsion and evilness of the murders while making it acceptable reading for the more feint hearted of crime fiction fans.

Smith and Whitton married at the end of book 8: Unworthy, and Laura, their daughter, is now 18 months old. Whitton is back at work full time and Smith is feeling very protective of his new family which is understandable given all the loved ones he has lost and the death and destruction he lives with every day. I think you need to take this into account when reading this book if you haven’t read the previous ones but otherwise it is a perfect stand alone story.

Harriet Taylor comes from Edinburgh and transferred to Cornwall when her husband was killed in an accident with his lover in the car and she found herself subject to a lot of gossiping and sniggering behind her back. She has no plans to return to Edinburgh anytime soon.

I wont rewrite the synopsis but boats wash up in York and Whitby with Harriet and Smith being on the respective investigations. It soon becomes clear that the link is Edinburgh. Will Harriet face her ex colleagues and travel back to her home town to investigate? Meanwhile Smith receives threatening messages as a nemesis from his past reappears.

This is a fast paced read with twists, turns and danger around every corner. Smith and Harriet are at risk and so are the people they care about as a psychopathic killer with absolutely no conscience travels the UK leaving dead bodies in his wake.

I just kept turning page after page it is an adrenaline pumping read I simply could not put down and as the pages kept turning the endings were total curve balls I really was not expecting.

All I can say is WOW this is a must read for anyone who loves crime fiction and to the author: please hurry up with the next book.

Absolutely awesome definitely 5 Golden Stars (maybe platinum) this is now top of my Picks of 2018 list.

This is a fast paced read with twists, turns and danger around every corner. Smith and Harriet join forces to stop a psychopathic killer no conscience.

It is common knowledge around the station that the woman who died next to him was his latest lover. Harriet transferred to Trotterdown to escape the gossip and sympathetic looks. Advent Book Blog 21 and today it is MISSING LIES in the spotlight.  This is book 7 in the brilliant DI Mariner series by Chris Collett and is another adrenaline pumping addition to an awesome series.

Missing Lies (DI Tom Mariner book 7)

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

18-year-old Grace Clifton vanishes on her way home from work. Amazingly, not a single witness comes forward. But Detective Tom Mariner suspects that she ran away from her overbearing, rich father.

A PACKAGE ARRIVES AT THE POLICE STATION. IT CONTAINS GRACE’S CLOTHES, NEATLY FOLDED AND CLEANED.

Then another woman disappears. And a disturbing pattern begins to emerge.

WHO IS TAKING THEM?

Detective Mariner must track down a suspected serial killer in his toughest, and strangest, case yet, with a conclusion that will have you gasping.

Perfect for fans of Peter James, Angela Marsons, Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson. This is the seventh book in the DI MARINER SERIES.

My Review

This is Book 7 in the DI Mariner series and I have read and loved every book.  It does work very well as stand alone but I think you will probably want to read them all as they are very addictive.

Mariner is feeling a little out of sorts.  His partner, Tony Knox has been seconded to a special operations project. Vicky Jesson is fairly knew and Charlie Glover is not really a colleague Mariner could confide in.  That said, disjointed though the team may be, they all get along and look out for each other.

To add to Mariners problems he recently lost his girlfriend and ended up with guardianship of Jamie, her severely autistic brother.  So with caring responsibilities to add to the stresses of his position he is pulled many ways and his new relationship with Suzy is suffering as a result.

When a young woman goes missing the initial thoughts are she had run away and with no body and no clues the team don’t really have much to go on.  When more young women go missing the links are made and the race is on to find the abductor before he takes anyone else.

This is a real emotional roller coaster ride of a book with twists and turns all the way through and the people I had marked as possible bad guys – well I couldn’t have been more wrong.  The characters still have more to reveal about themselves and continue to develop.

Another adrenaline pumping addition to a brilliant series.  5 Golden stars from me.

THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Tom Mariner is, on the surface, an average dedicated policeman, but his experiences as a younger man have given him an insight into life on the dark side, and a clear sense of right and wrong. Mariner has little interest in material things. He lives in a modest canal-side cottage, enjoys the occasional (real) beer and game of dominoes and drives an old car. He is most at home in the outdoors, with an OS map and a compass, and in times of crisis, will take off and walk for miles in any weather.

THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “DEAD OF NIGHT.”

DI MARINER SERIES
Book 1: Deadly Lies
Book 2: Innocent Lies
Book 3: Killer Lies
Book 4: Baby Lies
Book 5: Married Lies
