BLOG TOUR – Author Interview with Chris Clement-Green, author of SHE WILL RESCUE YOU. #crimefiction #detective #netgalley #authorinterview @joffebooks

Today I am very excited to have the opportunity to chat with a new author to JOFFE BOOKS PUBLISHING.  Chris Clement-Green is the author of SHE WILL RESCUE YOU which is a brilliant read I couldnt put down.

Hello Chris, welcome to Joffe Books.  Congratulations on a brilliant book I am sure it will do well.

Could you please tell us a little about yourself and your writing?

I’ve always enjoyed writing, I remember writing a long story about a white horse when I was eleven and calling it ‘my first book’, but after school life took over and the only writing I did was in the form of police reports!

I left the police in 2000 to pursue a new career as a competitive dressage rider, before changing tack once again and starting university as ‘a mature student’ where studied drama. It was at Lincoln University that I joined my first writing group and they encouraged me to enter my first writing competition – the 2007 NAWG prize. You can imagine my utter surprise when I won the short story/monologue class with ‘Pebbles’ – an internal monologue involving a woman committing suicide on a deserted beach. This win encouraged me to undertake the Open University Creative Writing and Advanced Creative Writing programmes, which was followed in 2013 by an MA at Bath Spa University.

I was the only student to undertake a life-writing manuscript on that course, completing a memoir about my first ten years in Thames Valley Police. At the launch of the MA Anthology in London, I was told by many publishers and agents that although they liked my writing, there was no market for non-celebrity memoirs. Fortunately Mirror Books did not agree and when I answered an open submission call by them in 2017, they signed up my MA manuscript ‘Into the Valley’ within 24hrs!

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I have always been fortunate that during my MA year and while writing ‘She Will Rescue You’, my debut novel, I was free to write whenever I wanted to, with no other people or commitments to work around. During these times I used to write in bed from 7-10am before walking my dogs, and then return to writing at the kitchen table for as long as I wanted. When in the zone I can write for 6 hrs straight without even a cup of tea, but on other days I don’t even open my laptop, but spend the time walking and thinking. I’ve never suffered from writer’s block, but with the exception of completion entries I’ve never had to meet deadlines either!

What gave you the idea for She Will Rescue you?

The idea for ‘She Will Rescue You’ came from a police incident recorded in my memoir about catching two badger baiters red handed. They had made the mistake of parking their car on land belonging to royalty. When they returned to their vehicle with a live badger, armed protection officers were waiting for them.  I remember thinking as I arrested these men that I would like to do more than arrest them, I would like to give them a piece of their own medicine, and Ellie was born right then and there. I also recreate this incident in the novel, where the baiters do indeed get far more than a court appearance.

Is animal rescue something that is very close to your heart?

I love animals more than most humans, always have and always will. I worked closely with RSPCA on one or two police cases, and they are the sole beneficiaries of my will.

What do you have planned next for your readers?

I am currently working on another fictionalisation of a real event recorded in ‘Into the Valley’, where a black youth saved my life during a race riot in Oxford. ‘Rage Hard’ is set in Thatcher’s Britain and looks at all the ‘isms’ at play in the police force at that time, creating a Romeo and Juliet scenario between a white WPC and a black youth with a criminal record. I suppose it’s another police procedural with another very unlikely partnership.

Thank you for talking with us today.  Good luck with the new release and we look forward to more great books in the future.

I retired from Thames Valley Police after sixteen years as a uniform sergeant followed by five as a civilian investigator on serious and organised crime teams in Humberside and Wiltshire – which included working on several murder incident rooms.

My serious writing started in 2007 when I entered the National Association of Writer’s Groups annual short story competition. It was my first competition so I was astonished to win with Pebbles. This win encouraged me to undertake the Open University Creative Writing and Advanced Creative Writing courses, which I completed with distinction. In 2013 I was accepted onto the prestigious Bath Spa University Creative Writing MA, where I completed a humorous but gritty life-writing manuscript Into the Valley which was subsequently published by Mirror Books in 2017.

I have had several articles and letters published in national UK magazines, most notably Writing Magazine, and in September 2016 I was published in The New Guard Volume V a literary journal based in New York. I have also been short listed in the Literature Works First Page Writing Prize and in several Writing Magazine competitions. In 2016 my fantasy short story, Layla, was published in Divinity Fantasia Magazine and I won the Oriel Davis Prose Competition with Cosmic Tiger and was also a finalist in the Women in Comedy Festival with my monologue Queenie. This year my article Food for Thought was runner up in the Scribble annual article completion, and I co-wrote a piece on the subject of Mentoring with James McCreet which was published on the 6th September 2018.

My recently completed debut novel She Will Rescue You is being published on the 30th May 2019 by Joffe Books and I am currently working on a new crime novel – Rage Hard which is another police procedural set in Oxford revolving around a white WPC and black criminal during the race riots of Thatcher’s Britain.

My Review

When you are introduced to a new author you are unsure what to expect and especially if it is also a debut.  So I was very pleasantly surprised when I began reading this book.

I was immediately gripped.  It is a very unique story.  One that had me questioning whose side I was actually on.

Life dealt Ellie a rough hand.  Small in stature with crooked teeth she is nothing to look at, is living on the breadline and recently lost her mother to cancer.  Nobody to love her or to love except her precious animals.  When a gift floats in to her hands she suddenly has the means to make a difference.  She grabs the opportunity with both hands and sets about seeking justice for the illtreated and abused animals that she loves so much.

Mia is a forensic psychologist for the NCA.  She likes the finer things in life, designer clothes, good food top range cars etc.  She has the body and the looks to have most men drooling and enjoys flirting with Mark.

As the investigation progresses Mia manages to untangle the clues much faster than Mark and his team and soon finds a way to link up to the elusive Ellie.  What she finds is very different to what she was expecting.

This is an intriguing book that has the pages turning.  It is different in a very refreshing way as the lines between right and wrong become blurred.  The characters are all unique and cleverly created to make them interesting and realistic building in complexity throughout the story.  There is a little romance worked cleverly through but, thankfully, no explicit sex scenes and the romance is an important part of the story rather than something thrown in.  The description is minimal and relevant which makes this a fast-paced read that is all action and investigation.

A brilliant read I am really looking forward to reading more from this author.

Two skeletons are discovered in the grounds of St Mary’s Choir School. This was not a centuries-old Christian burial. They are wearing modern-day clothes and there is evidence of foul play. Consecrated land has been sadistically violated.

Detective Inspector Gilbert Markham is a rising talent of the Bromgrove police force. He is on the trail of the murderer, when another life is brutally claimed. Who is the savage killer lurking in this innocent place?

DI Markham and his team are met with intense hostility when they step up their operation. Is this just local panic? Or are they about to stumble into a web of corruption which runs deeper than they could have ever anticipated?

DI MARKHAM FACES A RACE AGAINST TIME TO SAVE HIS GIRLFRIEND FROM BEING THE NEXT VICTIM.

My Review

This is book 1 in the Markham mystery series. 20 years earlier 3 boys went missing and Mike Bamber was working the case. Only one body was found and nobody was charged with the crime. 20 years later Mike Bamber has retired with the case of the missing boys continuing to haunt him – the one that got away.

Olivia is a teacher and is contacted by St Marys Choir School with the offer of a job. The school is based in an old building next to the Cathedral. Work is being carried out around the Cathedral and the bodies of 2 boys are found. DI Markham and DS Noakes are handed the case. Markham is in a relationship with Olivia but keeps it quiet to prevent being taken off the case.

It soon becomes clear that Mike’s cold case has reared its head. Can Markham succeed where Mike failed? What exactly is going on at the Choir School? I had to keep turning the pages to find the answers.

I love Noakes he is big, brash and honest but underneath that lies a very compassionate man who is able to connect to people on many levels. Markham is a bit more reserved but still a realistic well built character.

It is clear from the beginning that the dead children have brought back memories he has kept well hidden. This makes him more determined to solve the case. He and Noakes are a very effective team and Markham has deflected all attempts to split up their partnership.

This is a bit slow going in the early part as the scene is set and the characters develop but it still holds the readers interest as the intrigue builds.

I am looking forward to reading book 2.

A HEART-STOPPING CRIME THRILLER WITH A TWIST THAT YOU WON’T SEE COMING

A VIOLENT KILLER IS TERRORIZING BROMGROVE

Please note this book was first published as “Blood Will Have Blood”

Handsome teacher, Ashley Dean is brutally murdered at Hope Academy, a local school. It’s known as a rough place, but gossip blames the violence on a deranged intruder.

DI Markham’s instincts say otherwise. Could this brutality have been the work of a student? Could there even be a connection with the staff? It seems unthinkable. After all, DI Gilbert Markham’s girlfriend Olivia teaches English at the school.

Markham’s team probe deeper and the local community begin to turn against Markham. Somebody in a position of power is hiding appalling information. More blood will be spilt before their secrets are laid bare.

DI MARKHAM MUST FIGHT TO SAVE HIS GIRLFRIEND’S SCHOOL FROM A BRUTAL KILLER

My Review

This is book 2 of 4 and I would recommend reading this mini series in order as most of the character building and history takes place in book 1.

This book is faster paced than book 1. Olivia, again, plays a major part in this book as she discovers the first victim. As the bodies seemingly appear in places you wouldn’t expect Markham is once again caught up in a race against time to find the killer before he loses the case.

Just who is it who is murdering people who have hurt nobody? And why? As Markham and his team get down to searching for clues something turns up that causes a rift in his relationship with Olivia. Struggling to cope without the love of his life and the Chief trying to steer him in the wrong direction will Markham be able to clear his head and uncover the secrets of the staff at the school.

A good addition to the series and looking forward to reading book 3

The killer will not stop until this place of God is destroyed.

It is up to DI Gilbert Markham and his loyal deputy DS Noakes to stop the murderer. Cruel secrets come to light which force Markham’s girlfriend Olivia to face her own past. The body count in the monastery continues to rise, and once again, a violent evil proves devastatingly close to home.

WHAT IS THE HORRIFIC PAST THAT LIES BEHIND THE AWFUL MYSTERY OF SAINT CECILIA’S?

My Review

This is book 3 of 4 and I am really getting to know the characters. Markham is still a little insecure regarding his relationship with Olivia. Noakes is still the loveable brash individual and the newer team members continue to develop workwise and personality wise.

This book brings Noakes wife into the story and the reader is treated to a strong woman who likes to move in the higher circles and dresses accordingly. Trying to coach her husband to match up is a battle I doubt she will win. Her links with the church make her part in the story work very well.

Why are nuns and monks being murdered? This is the main question and as the body count increases Markham and his team are baffled. The clues are very well hidden and the team are, as usual, up against it to try to solve the case.

It has become the norm for Olivia to be caught up in the middle of the murders and this book continues that theme.

Another interesting read.

DI GILBERT MARKHAM FACES A VICIOUS KILLER IN A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL

Dr Warr’s decayed corpse is found in the woods. He worked at the local psychiatric hospital, but vanished over a year ago without a trace. People blamed his disappearance on a mental breakdown.

There have always been whispers about Newman Hospital. Staff brutality, deliberate misdiagnosis. DI Gilbert Markham and his right-hand man, DS Noakes begin asking questions. They are met with a chilling silence. It seems the people in power know more than they are letting on.

Another staff member is found in the annals of the hospital, strangled to death. How many more victims will be claimed before the vengeful killer is found?

DS Kate Burton, will fight for her life as Markham tries to stop the bloodshed.

WILL THE TEAM MAKE IT OUT OF THE HOSPITAL ALIVE?

My Review

This is the final book in the Detective Markham mini series.

A body is found and it turns out to be the body of a doctor who disappeared from a Mental Hospital a year earlier.  It was assumed the disappearance was the result of depression and that he had made a new life elsewhere or committed suicide.  Tests reveal neither of these was the case and he was in fact murdered.

Markham is tasked with investigating that and also a ‘secret’ investigation involving corruption.  As is usual when Markham is around more bodies turn up and the team is up against time to crack the case before more people lose their lives.

A steadily moving detective series that keeps the readers’ interest as we follow the investigation around the twists, turns and lies all the way to the surprising ending.

My Review

This is a stand alone thriller by the brilliant TJ Brearton that many Crime Fiction readers will enjoy.

Jane and John are struggling through day to day life as many couples do.  Life is not perfect and they have their arguments but on the whole they are happy.  John is a struggling author and Jane is a nurse practitioner.

Life is carrying on when a face from John’s past arrives on the doorstep.  From that point their lives start unravelling.  Jane returns from work in the early hours of a morning to find the children alone and John is missing.

Where did he go and why?  The Police suspect Jane and she is left with little choice than to do her own investigating to try to find out where her husband has gone and prove her innocence.

John is a troubled character.  He had a difficult childhood and is a recovering alcoholic.  Jane is stronger but also has a troubled past.  They are realistic characters and their history adds to their personalities to create complex people that the reader gets to know along the course of the book.

There are many twists and turns along the course of the story.  The book does slow down a little around the middle but I would encourage readers to bear with it as it does pick up significantly a bit further on.

An enjoyable read.

T. J. Brearton Author Bio

I started out wanting to make movies. My brother and sister were my first stars. After attending the New York Film Academy, I worked in showbiz for a little while and wrote my own screenplays. I always wrote prose fiction, too, and before I knew it, I had more books than movie gigs. Hey — Ridley Scott says writing novels and directing films are the “same thing”, and this way, I get to stay home.

I’ve had a lot of jobs. Construction, bartending, waiting tables — even weird things like cleaning tombstones and working for a non-profit. I’m fortunate to now write full time. And I’m lucky to have had my books hit the top 30 on Amazon Kindle US.

My fifteen novels are below. More coming soon. Thanks again, and please keep reading because without you I’m just a guy sitting alone in his basement..

This is a wonderfully written crime novel, with lots of clues leading in different directions. Once again, I was unable to work out the ending before I reached it but I couldn’t put the book down until I had reached that end. A must for any lover of police procedural novels and a five star read! Read more here

This one is full of action with solid police procedures throughout. Although 9th in this well-known series, it reads easily as a stand alone. There are twists and turns that lead to a very surprising ending.  Read more here

Helen has one of those writing styles that draws you in from the first word on the first page and she constantly dangles enough bait to keep you interested in the story and makes you feel desperate to find out who is doing what to whom and why.  That’s what happened to me anyway.  I was gripped by the story all the way through.  Read more here

Black Books Blog

The way the book switches between each case ensures you never know what is going to happen next and kept me hooked trying to work it all out. The plot is very well written and the way the two stories intermingle made it a very captivating and enjoyable read. Read more here

The Word is Out

Helen has absolutely cracked it for me personally, as she has fully rounded the main characters to a depth that I love! The cases within the story are switched from one to another so you have no idea where it will go and the twists make it such an ending!!! I loved it! Definitely one to read! Read more here

On The Shelf Reviews

Helen Durrant blends three storylines together seamlessly, none of them overshadowing the other, with a good pace and plenty of twists and turns along the way.  I also love Bayliss and Calladine, they’re such likeable characters, even though Calladine is back to his old ways, not committing to yet another relationship. I have hopes he’ll settle down one day!   Read more here

My Review

This is book 9 in the Calladine & Bayliss series but it does work well as stand alone.

A missing 3 year old child, Drugs, vigilantes, burglaries and murder.  Calladine and his team are really up against it.  When a fellow Detective has a heart attack Calladine finds the whole lot is for his team to investigate.

There is a lot going on in this book as the team buckle down to start following leads.  They are getting nowhere fast.  Who is the elusive Street and why are the criminals they have arrested being released?  It smacks of corruption and when Calladine is ordered to back off investigating Street his worst fears are realised.

Reading this series is a bit like coming home. Familiar characters but you always learn something new and the advantage of these books is Helen is such a brilliant author she manages to write the books so you can step in at any point in the series and quickly catch up.  No repetitive text to bore the readers who are following the series but enough to fill in blanks for new readers.

This is a twisty turny book that I simply couldn’t put down there are real shockers all the way through and it is packed with suspense to keep the adrenaline pumping.  WOW what an awesome read and when it gets towards the end and the clues start to link the different threads you think you have worked out what the ending is going to be…..  Wrong!  The ending is a total unexpected mind blowing shock.

An absolutely brilliant read that had me turning page after page.  5 golden stars from me.

I’m one of the ‘baby boomer’ generation. I was born in Edinburgh to an English father and Scottish mother. My father was from the North West of England and this was where the family settled.

I know the area well, both the good and the bad, and so I set my books here. Sitting between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills, it offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein. I always planned to write crime novels — to create the characters in my books. Since my retirement from a busy teaching job in FE, this is what I’ve done — almost to exclusion of anything else!

I have a grown-up family and five grandchildren. They see me as something of an eccentric — always on my laptop writing away. Writing is something of a second career and, despite having a bus pass, keeps me busy, young and tuned in the world as it currently is.
