A TOTALLY GRIPPING CRIME MYSTERY FROM BESTSELLING AUTHOR JANICE FROST.

The early hours of a freezing January night. Special Constable Jane Bell is at the end of a busy late shift when she’s called out to investigate strange noises in a local park. She finds a wailing new-born baby girl dumped in a plastic storage box.

That same night Detective Steph Warwick attends the murder of coach driver Bernie Gore, whose battered body is found in a narrow alleyway.

The last thing Jane wants is to lock horns with Steph Warwick once again. Then vital evidence emerges linking Bernie Gore’s murder to the abandoned baby. And Jane has no choice but to alert the sharp-tongued detective inspector.

To solve Bernie’s murder and track down Baby Elsa’s mother, the two women must bury the hatchet and learn to work together.

Matters become even more complicated when a prime suspect emerges — with close links to Jane’s family.

This unputdownable mystery full of twists is the perfect read for fans of: Angela Marsons, Helen H. Durrant, Rachel McLean and Michael Hambling.

MEET THE DETECTIVES
SPC Jane Bell is forty-five, a widow of three years following the premature death of her husband, Sam. She has two grown-up children, Patrick and Norah, who are pursuing careers in London. After Sam’s death, Jane makes some changes to her life. She downsizes from their large family home in the country to a cottage in Lincoln.

DI Stephanie Warwick is thirty-five. She left school at eighteen and worked in a bank before joining the police force. She is haunted by her ex-boyfriend, Cal. He attempted to kill her twelve years ago, and murdered her best friend.

My Review

SC Bell is nearing the end of her shift when she is called to investigate a baby crying.  It is a freezing cold night and the noises are reported to be coming from a park it has to be a hoax, doesn’t it?  Unfortunately not.  The baby is in a plastic box but whose is it, and where is the mother, why was it dumped…..?  A lot of questions and very few answers.

Meanwhile, Detective Warwick is attending the murder of a coach driver.

Jane Bell and Steph Warwick prefer not to cross paths but when links between the baby show up Jane has no choice but to pass the information on to Detective Warwick.  As investigations into both cases continue links to Jane Bell’s personal life are revealed and it seems that once again the two women must put their differences aside and work together to solve the cases.

It is a very cleverly woven story with more twists and turns than a plate of spaghetti with many dead ends and false leads along the way and there in the background is the mystery of the abandoned baby.  At times it seems both cases will remain unsolved but despite being very different the 2 women are very determined to get to the truth.

I thought I had gotten very good at working out the guilty ones in detective stories but this one had me guessing and changing my mind all the way to an ending I certainly was not expecting.

Adrenaline pumping suspense, family dynamics and relationships, secrets and lies all play their part in this brilliantly gripping thriller.  5 stars from me.
