Today is my turn on the Blog Tour for this absolutely stunning new release by Janice Frost. Although it is book 6 in the series it will work perfectly as stand-alone. All I can say is WOW what a brilliant book this is.

DS MERRY & DI NEAL SERIES
Book 1: DEAD SECRET
Book 2: DARK SECRET
Book 3: HER HUSBAND’S SECRET
Book 4: THEIR FATAL SECRETS
Book 5: DIRTY SECRETS
Book 6: MURDEROUS SECRETS

Ava and PJ go to a Barn Dance at a remote retreat.  Everyone is having a great time.  Ava goes outside for some fresh air and spots some lads messing about she moves closer to investigate expecting nothing more that to have to reprimand the boys for drinking or smoking.  What they discover in the barn will haunt all of them for some time to come.  And that is not the worst crime scene.

As the investigation begins the team are wading through treacle tying to uncover the secrets that everyone seems to be hiding but do these secrets have anything to do with the murders?  That is the question everyone would like answers to.

It is an intriguing story with a lot of twists and turns and events from the past impacting on the future the team has its work cut out unravelling the lies and secrets.

This is book 6 in the ‘Secrets’ series but it does work very well as stand alone.  The author makes a first class job of filling in the blanks without it being repetitive for the readers who have read the back list.

Jim Neal is a single parent but has had help from his sister in caring for his young son but Maggie has got married and is now on honeymoon in Australia.  Handling a complex double murder while juggling parental commitments and handling the day to day chores that Maggie used to do is putting him under a lot of pressure with nobody to lean on.  He is a private person but an excellent detective and a caring boss to his dedicated team.

Ava Merry is looking after her younger brother so can relate to the problems Neal is facing.  She is falling for her boss which is making things complicated and struggling with her emotions while trying to work her way through the case is putting her under a lot of pressure.

As the story progresses we find several likely suspects each with their own axe to grind and I can honestly say I didn’t have a clue who the murderer was until the very end.

I love Janice Frost’s book but she has really hit the ball out of the park with this one.  Adrenaline pumping suspense, intrigue and red herrings are all interwoven with the nitty gritty of detective work.  This is one of the best books I have read for a long time and well worth the 5 stars.

My Review

A new series from one of my favourite authors is always exciting.

Siv Drummond – her husband and soul mate has died in an accident leaving her bereft and broken.  She moves to Berminster to try to move on with her life.  A new home, a new area, new colleagues, boss and everything that goes with it is a big challenge for someone who is lost but Siv is basically strong and is determined to find her way.

She is paired with Ali an overweight diabetic but one with a big heart and compassionate nature he is just what Siv needs.  Someone she can instinctively trust and rely on even if they need to get to know each other.

The story begins with a polish man finding the body of a young woman while doing a little early morning fishing.  The discovery costs him his life and there we have it, Siv Drummond thrown in the deep end with 2 dead bodies no motive and no clues.  The only clue is a photo left on the woman’s body the photo is a young child but nobody knows who she is.

This is a complex story with many false leads and unexpected twists as the team slowly unravel the clues and lies.  It appears everyone is hiding something but is that something relevant to the case?

A very intriguing story with characters who develop well.  I am looking forward to reading more in this new series.

MEET THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Siv Drummond is widowed following a tragic accident involving her husband. With everything in London reminding her of the past, she moves from a high-profile squad with the Met to a new job as DI in her old home town — sleepy, seaside Berminster. She’s still grieving and lonely, but she’s a fighter and she’s smart, which earns her the respect of her colleagues DS Ali Carlin and DC Patrick Hill, and the grudging approval of her DCI, who wants his protégé to get her job.

Blog Tour – THESE LITTLE LIES by Gretta Mulrooney – An introduction to the Siv Drummond series #crimefiction @joffebooks

I am very excited to be kicking of the Blog Tour for These Little Lies by the critically acclaimed Gretta Mulrooney. This is the first book in a brand new series so I thought we would start the tour with an introduction to the series and Siv Drummond by Gretta. I hope you enjoy reading

Introduction to the Siv Drummond series by Gretta Mulrooney

I’ve written a series about a male private detective and decided I’d like to write a police based series and create a female detective. I discovered through DNA testing that I’m part Viking, and I’ve always been interested in people with mixed heritage, so DI Siv Drummond came into my head and took shape.

She’s part Finnish, part Scots. I decided to invent a Sussex coastal town, Berminster, for her to work in, because it allows me to go free range with the environment. I’ve made Siv a young widow and given her Mutsi, a monstrous mother to deal with as I felt she needed challenges apart from the gritty ones in her job. Also, this complexity reflects the lives of many women I’ve worked with down the years and I can have fun with her very naughty Mutsi.

BURIED CRIMES
Devastating family secrets from the past. Sisters with a murderous rivalry . . .

A family move into their dream home in Dorchester: it seems perfect, particularly for their two children, but when Philip and Jill Freeman decide to move a buddleia bush, what they find buried beneath its roots will haunt them forever.

Why have two children’s skeletons been lovingly wrapped and buried in their garden?

TWISTED CRIMES
Sylvia and Ted Armitage, a retired couple, attend the wrong funeral service by mistake. A month later their daughter returns from holiday to find them missing. The police make little headway in tracing their whereabouts until their bodies are found in their car, abandoned in the middle of a copse in a tranquil nature reserve. They appear to have committed suicide, but some of the forensic evidence suggests otherwise. The police slowly make progress and find several links to a shady organisation that owns a string of bars, clubs and cafes.
When another body is found in the same area, DCI Sophie Allen must use all her investigative skills to unravel the connections between these very different victims. Some are involved in shady deals and corruptions, others are masking dark family secrets. Sophie is joined by two new police officers, Rose Simons and George Warrander, who will transform her team.

EVIL CRIMES
A young man’s body is spotted in the stormy sea off Dancing Ledge in Dorset.

Did he lose his footing in the gale force winds and fall in? Or is there a more sinister cause of death?

Detective Sophie Allen’s team discover some curious links to a suicide that happened six months earlier. A strikingly attractive female student connects the cases. Alarming facts slowly come to light as the team probes more deeply.

Is the young woman as evil as she seems or is someone else manipulating her?

Her partner DI Tom Calladine faces the fight of his life to clear his name of corruption accusations. And then things go from bad to worse for Calladine . . .

With the team under massive pressure and drugs flooding the streets, another gruesomely presented body is found.

Ruth Bayliss is in her mid-thirties, plain-speaking but loyal. She is balancing her professional life with looking after a small child.

THE SETTING
The fictional village of Leesdon on the outskirts of an industrial northern English city. There is little work and a lot of crime. The bane of Calladine’s life is the Hobfield housing estate, breeding ground to all that is wrong with the area that he calls home.

My Review

Helen is one of my favourite authors and I love all 3 of her series’ so was very excited to read this new addition to the Calladine & Bayliss series.  What can I say?  FANTASTIC I  was gripped from the very first page, fast paced, plenty going on and adrenaline pumping suspense.  What more could I ask it ticked every single box.

The story starts with the abduction of a child that reveals the corpse of a murdered woman this victim has been tortured in a horrific way and affects the team badly.  Close on the heels of this Calladine goes missing and the discovery of a dangerous batch of drugs that are flooding the area Ruth and the remainder of the team are chasing their tails trying to keep up with everything.

We learn more about Ruth in this book as she struggles with a difficult decision that could affect everyone.  The rest of the team’s character’s continue to grow and develop into well rounded, realistic but complex characters.

There are many twists and turns as the team juggle the two cases and several mind blowing shockers ensure that the reader keeps turning the pages all the way to the jaw dropping conclusion.

Brilliant read well worth the 5 stars.

Author Bio

Helen sets her books in the area she has lived in for many years. The towns and villages that sit in the shelter of the Pennine hills. This is an area between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills. It offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein.

Helen always planned to write crime novels. But until she retired from full-time work in a local further education college, it had to go on the back burner. Once she did retire – there was no excuse. She now writes full-time. Retirement proper will have to wait!

Currently there are nine books in the ‘Calladine & Bayliss’ series available – Dead Wrong, Dead Silent, Dead List, Dead Lost, Dead & Buried, Dead Nasty, Dead Jealous, Dead Bad, and the latest – Dead Guilty. There is also a box set of the first three books.

Also available are four books in the ‘DI Greco’ series – Dark Murder, Dark Houses, Dark Trade, and the latest – Dark Angel.

There are two books in the DI Matt Brindle series – His Third Victim and The Other Victim.

MY REVIEW

Helen Durrant is a fabulous author and I loved this book from the very first page. Forensic pathology is a particular interest of mine so this was an extra bonus. While it is part of a series it does work very well as stand alone. The book does refer to events from the previous book but Helen has, excellently, managed to bring a new reader up to date while at the same time ensuring readers of the previous books are not bored with recaps from previous books.

There are several cases that the team has to juggle. A teenage girl is murdered, a 17 year old cold case is reopened and a viscous moneylender has residents living in fear. Totally different cases and the team is struggling to move forward with any of them.

Team dynamics play a big part in this book as personal feelings and resentments come to the fore. The characters are very realistic and complex. We learn a little about their personal lives within the book as they develop.

A fresh pair of eyes and a different perspective added to advances in forensics brings to light evidence and possibilities that were overlooked 17 years ago with shocking results. There are many twists and turns along the way as the team untangles a web of lies going back many years. The conclusion is a real shocker that the reader cant see coming,

I absolutely loved this book I was hooked from the beginning and just kept reading ‘a little bit more’. I intend to read Helen’s backlist as soon as time allows.

A fantastic read. Thank you to Joffe Books for the advance copy,

My Review

This is book 6 in the Calladine and Bayliss series. The first book I read in this series was book 7 some time ago and I have found the time to go back to the beginning and catch up so I can confirm they work perfectly as stand alone although I would recommend starting at the beginning if possible.

The body of a teenager is found and the method of murder takes Calladine back to a case from his past. The murder of Annabelle affected Calladine all those years ago and although the killer was caught and imprisoned he always maintained he was innocent. However, he has been released on parole and now history is repeating itself. Was the wrong man imprisoned? Calladine thinks not but Ruth Bayliss uncovers questions from the earlier case that had no answers forcing Calladine to question is gut instinct.

This case brings both Calladine and Bayliss’ personal lives into their professional ones as they both try to uncover the clues to identify the killer.

I love the characters in this book they develop a little more with each addition to the series as we learn more about the history that has shaped the individual.

This is a fast paced, intriguing story that kept the pages turning on a roller coaster ride of adrenaline pumping suspense all the way to the totally shocking ending.

WOW 5 stars from me – absolutely brilliant
