THE SETTING
The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.
Review
I absolutely love this series and each book seems to be better than the last so there was a bit of squealing and jumping up and down when this arrived on my Kindle. I wasn’t disappointed the suspense starts at the very first page and doesn’t let up until the end.
Nikki seems to have been targeted by a psychopath the first sign is an airmail letter with just 3 words and a list of names. Nikki and Joseph are flummoxed but they dont have long to wait for the next clue and then it becomes clear they are in a race against time but what is the end game of this madman? Why is Nikki being blamed for unsolved cases that she wasn’t involved in? As the team try to sort out a way forward another airmail package arrives. It soon becomes clear that they are dealing with someone very clever, someone who is able to succeed where detective teams failed and the clock is ticking.
In addition to the mysterious case Nikki has been landed with there are other crimes to consider, someone is stalking young women and Vonnie fears the problem is much bigger than the ones they know about. Also Eve, Nikki’s mother has found a new hobby and we all know that Eve attracts trouble but what harm can a bit of metal detecting do? The mind boggles.
As I mentioned at the beginning this is such a brilliant read so much going on people I suspected turn out to be completely innocent, clues lead to the opposite of what I was expecting all resulting in an adrenaline pumping read that I just couldnt put down and when a much loved character from one of Joy’s other series’ makes and appearance – well WOW an absolutely, jawdroppingly awesome read definitely worth more than 5 stars.
