THE DETECTIVES
Tom Calladine is a detective inspector who is devoted to his job. His personal life, however, is not so successful. Having been married and divorced before the age of twenty-one has set a pattern that he finds difficult to escape.
Ruth Bayliss is in her mid-thirties, plain-speaking but loyal. She is balancing her professional life with looking after a small child.
THE SETTING
The fictional village of Leesdon is on the outskirts of an industrial northern English city. There is little work and a lot of crime. The bane of Calladine’s life is the Hobfield housing estate, breeding ground to all that is wrong with the area that he calls home.
Review
I am thrilled to have been able to catch up with Calladine and Bayliss again in this gripping, 12th book in the series. If you haven’t read any of this series yet it is fine because they work perfectly stand alone.
Tom Calladine had a health scare at the end of the last book but after a break he is now ready to get back to work which is just as well because a very perplexing case is about to land on his desk.
The decomposing body of a young man is found, Noah Crosby was only 16 how come nobody missed him and why would someone want to kill him? Not robbery as he was still wearing very expensive trainers and a high end mobile phone was found on his body. During the post-mortem an X was found carved into his body, this was the trademark of a serial killer from Calladine’s past who was never caught.
As the team begin to investigate it soon becomes clear that this is going to be a difficult case and when the shop of Tom Calladine’s girlfriend is targeted things become even more complicated. Can the team crack this case before anyone else dies?
Picking up an addition to a long running series like this is like having a catch up with old friends as we find out what has changed and see how the characters develop and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
Another gripping story that had me turning page after page each one filled with more suspense and intrigue – absolutely brilliant I really hope this series will keep on running.
