MEET DETECTIVE KATE HAMBLIN IN THIS BESTSELLING SERIES SET IN THE STUNNING SOMERSET COUNTRYSIDE.

A long weekend in a country house hotel. Six old friends. One ruthless killer.

Detective Kate and her husband Hayden are on their way home from a romantic mini-break when a ferocious storm blows in and their car breaks down. Stranded on a remote lane in the blizzard, they seek shelter in a nearby hotel, Warneford Hall.

They aren’t the only guests. Six old university friends have met there for a reunion weekend.

Each one of them is hiding a terrible secret.

As they go down for breakfast in the grand dining room, they discover one of them is missing. A body is discovered in the hotel lake.

When another guest is found drowned in their bathtub, it’s clear these are no accidents. But the killer hasn’t reckoned on Somerset’s top detective staying at the hotel.

Two drownings in two days is no coincidence.

Snowed in, with no signal and the phone lines down, Detective Kate must unmask the killer before anyone else dies.

Perfect for fans of J.D. Kirk, Joy Ellis, Mel Sherratt, Angela Marsons and Helen H. Durrant.

THE DETECTIVES
Detective Sergeant Kate Lewis is a feisty detective with a dynamic approach to her job. She is tenacious, but also prone to being headstrong. This often lands her in tight spots, earning her the nicknames ‘Maverick’ or ‘Go-It-Alone’ Kate, and it puts her on a collision course with the more bureaucratic hierarchy of the force.

In contrast to Kate, her detective constable husband and partner, Hayden, is an overweight, untidy, ex-public schoolboy with a pompous, laidback attitude and an old-fashioned view of life, which drives Kate to distraction. But he is also highly intelligent with a reasoned approach to everything, which, can sometimes act as a brake on his partner’s impulsive behaviour.

THE SETTING
A patchwork of fields, peat moor and marshland, dotted with picturesque villages and criss-crossed by man-made irrigation ditches or rhynes, the Somerset Levels covers an area of about 160,000 acres between the Mendips and Quantock Hills. Sparsely populated and prone to flooding with a brooding stillness, which creeps into the very soul; a secret place bound to fire the imagination of any self-respecting crime novelist, whose thoughts will invariably turn to . . . murder.

Review

I was so thrilled to find out that David Hodges had released another book in this absolutely brilliant series and I wasn’t disappointed.

Kate and Hayden are on a mini break when the weather takes a turn for the worst.  They set off back early but the car breaks down.  They are stranded in the middle of nowhere the only place to shelter is a Hotel that doesn’t look very inviting but any port in a storm so off they head.  The welcome isn’t what they expected but they are given a room and informed the phone line is down so nobody knows where they are as there is no mobile signal..

They are sharing the hotel with a group of ex-students having a reunion.  Not ideal but ….

Next morning a body is found, then everyone’s mobile phone disappears and that is only the start of the problems.

An absolutely gripping story that grabs the reader from the beginning and doesn’t let go until the very end.

An interesting mix of characters with their own personalities.   A plot that keeps on giving …

I absolutely loved this, definitely 5 stars from me.
