Anthea is in a bind. Branded as a thief by her neighbours and friends and living on the breadline with her gambling father she is caught between a rock and a hard place: move in with her father’s woman or go and ask for help from a family friend.
Throwing herself at the mercy of Gideon she begs him to loan her the funds to start a business. But Gideon has a better idea and proposes marriage. If the proposal was not shock enough Gideon informs her that he knows of the rumours and he is convinced of her innocence. Accepting the proposal Andrea wonders what she has let herself in for.
Unsure where her new life will take her Andrea packs her bags and elopes with Gideon.
A historical fiction read with romance and crime thrown into the mix this is a very gripping read with realistic characters that develop well and a unique story that keeps the reader guessing and wondering all the way through. The introduction of amateur detectives’ John and Lydia adds more interest to the story and there is also humour.
A very entertaining read that had me turning page after page well into the night. I will certainly be looking for more from this author.

Beth Andrews (a.k.a. Paul Bethel) was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. At the age of about seven, ‘Beth’ was reading lurid and completely inappropriate tales of murder in True Detective magazine — which may explain her somewhat twisted sense of humour. Writing soon followed. Graduating to Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen, Regency romance and mystery was a natural progression — though Paul still indulges in scribbling occasional contemporary stories and song lyrics just for fun, as well as non-fiction articles and essays for Jane Austen’s Regency World. Paul also enjoys music, gardening, travel (pre-pandemic, of course) and the beach.
