A compelling tale of secrets and betrayal, friendship and trust in a time of war.

1941. Bombs are falling all over Plymouth. Young Maisie O’Sullivan must make a choice that will change her life for ever.

Maisie yearns for a family of her own. Raised as a charity orphan in a Catholic convent in Ireland, she believed she was all alone in the world.

But when she is twelve, her world is turned upside down by a shocking revelation. She is uprooted from the only life she has ever known, and transplanted against her will to Plymouth, England.

Family might not be all it’s cracked up to be. But Maisie is resilient. She surrounds herself with a family of her own making. Lovely old Zeek, her grandfather-like neighbour. Feisty Kitty, her inseparable friend. Young fisherman Nick, her kind and patient boyfriend.

Then war breaks out across Europe and a horrific tragedy occurs during one of the worst nights of the Plymouth Blitz. Maisie makes a momentous decision that will take her life in a very unexpected direction . . . But will she be able to live with the consequences?

Fans of Nadine Dorries, Rosie Goodwin, Dilly Court, Freda Lightfoot, Anna Jacobs, Rosie Clarke and Catherine Cookson will adore this compelling tale of secrets, betrayal and friendship spanning generations.

My Review:

The Convent Girl is a brilliant historical saga by Tania Crosse.  Although book 10 in the Devonshire series the books are stand alone stories and can be read and enjoyed in any order.

Maisie is living in a Convent in Ireland.  Although the nuns are strict this is the only life she has ever known and has always been told her parents were dead.  So when at 12 years old her father turns up to drag her away from her life and friends she is more than shocked and absolutely devastated.

It is soon clear that her father just wanted a skivvy and makes Maisie’s life a misery.

As time passes on we follow Maisie in her determination to escape the clutches of her father and fulfil her dream.  There are many traumas along the way and when War comes to England we get a vision of what it was like to live in a city during WW2.

This is a very gripping book that I just had to keep reading.  I really enjoyed reading about Maisie’s struggles and admired her determination.  Her friendship with Kitty brought so much to the story.

It was eye opening to realise how living in a convent with only females and under the strict rules of the church would leave such a mark.

As the book progressed and we learn of the sacrifices she made I did fear that she would never fulfil her dream to have a home and family of her own.  Did she?  You will have to read the book to find out.

A very gripping read that I absolutely loved.  Definitely 5 stars from me.
