What the Bloggers thought

Donna’s Book Blog  It is 5 stars from me for this one, I thought it was a cracking read, I love the author’s writing style and this is one of my favorites – very highly recommended!!

Linda Strong Book Reviews  A tightly implemented plot amid a swirl of deaths, lies, and secrets makes this one a real page-turning nail biter. The characters are skillfully drawn and one of her recurring characters will sorely be missed. There is lots of action, many and varied suspects to follow leading to an unexpected ending.

Nicki’s book blog  A brilliant plot that keeps the grey matter active (but nothing to keep you awake) and characters that have that “something” about them- a little humour, a little background and come across really well- the skill of a good author.

On The Shelf Reviews  As with all of Stewart Giles’ books there’s no shortage of blood, bodies and drama. The first half focuses on Harriet’s investigation, then the second Smith is brought in after Harriet’s murder to wrap it all up.

Beyond the Books  The story, as always moves at a pace that is always satisfying with any Stewart Giles story. The twists come thick and fast and the bodies keep showing up. The story is a definite creep-fest, mystical symbols, shells, snakes, even a raven watching!

The Word is Out  It’s another great but sad murder mystery, well written with plenty of twists and very engaging characters which will keep the reader engrossed right up to the last page. Highly recommended, as are all the books by this author. 5*
Ginger Book Geek  I thoroughly enjoyed every single second of ‘The Raven Girl’.  I must admit that I have a particular soft spot for DS Jason Smith.  I got into this book from the very start and I found that I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough.

From # 1 bestselling author, Stewart Giles comes a new detective Harriet Taylor/Jason Smith thriller.

The lives of the people in the charming Cornish village of Trotterdown are about to be shattered.

When the body of a man is discovered on a beach near Trotterdown, detective Harriet Taylor gets to work. It soon becomes clear that this was no ordinary murder – the man was placed in a yoga position and his pockets were filled with seashells.

As more bodies pile up, suspicion falls on the residents of the old Beekeeper’s house. Who are these New-Age youngsters and is their ‘peace and love’ philosophy merely a front to cover up something sinister?

Harriet and her team are stumped. Everywhere they turn seems to lead nowhere, and they soon believe these gruesome murders will remain unsolved forever.

Then Detective Sergeant Jason Smith receives a phone call that will change his life forever. Harriet’s DI calls and gives him some terrible news.
‘Harriet Taylor is dead.’

Smith must now make a choice. Harriet’s DI has asked for his help in the investigation that resulted in her grisly death, but does Smith really want to get involved in something that really does not concern him?

Against his better judgement and ignoring his wife’s pleas, Smith heads off to Trotterdown to see if he can find out what it was that Harriet failed to see, but when he eventually does uncover what it was Harriet discovered that culminated in her death, his own life is put at risk. Could this be the case that finishes off Smith for good?

‘Another ‘can’t put it down’ book from Stewart Giles. This book ends the short series with Harriet Taylor as the central character. The author found a chilling way to do that and bring DS Jason Smith’s brilliance to the finale.’ – Alison
‘Another outing with familiar characters, false leads, strange goings on and more twists and turns than a roller coaster this is an awesome read that keeps the pages turning all the way to the stunning ending.’ – I Love Books

My Review

I am not sure if I can ever forgive Stewart for killing off Harriet but that aside this is a fantastic read.  If you read The Beekeeper you will enjoy this book all the more but if you haven’t it won’t spoil your enjoyment as it isn’t linked in any way that matters but knowing the Alice Green character will bring a little more to the reading experience.

The story begins a few years ago with the assault of a couple of young girls one of these is the granddaughter of The Beekeeper.  Alice has died and Caroline has inherited her property and lives there in a kind of hippie way embracing nature with her friends coming and going as free spirits do.

When a man’s body is found in the lotus position Harriet and Killion investigate.  There are many suspects but very little in the way of clues.  Killion is struggling with his wife’s illness and when Harriet dies he realises he doesn’t have the motivation to crack the case and rings Smith for help.

As I expect from Stewart there are many twists and turns to the story as more bodies turn up it becomes obvious the link is the assault on the girls a few years before.  A suspected suicide and the rest of the team have the case all wrapped up but not Smith.  As we would expect Jason Smith’s gut instinct is setting off warning bells all over the place and he continues searching for clues until the case is cracked.

Another outing with familiar characters, false leads, strange goings on and more twists and turns than a roller coaster this is an awesome read that keep the pages turning all the way to the stunning ending.

STEWART GILES

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.

In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.

Miranda is something totally different. A stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before. This was followed by the sequel Mistress in 2019.

The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow and there are now 13 books including the introduction: Phobia. Book 12: Deadeye will be published in February 2020.
