My Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the first book in the new Morgan Dane series by Melinda Leigh and having loved her previous books I was looking forward to reading this and it didn’t disappoint.

Morgan is picking up the pieces of her life after her husband was killed leaving her with 3 young children.  She moves back to Scarlet Falls where her family live and has just secured a job with the District Attorney when Tessa disappears.  Scarlet Falls is a close knit community where everyone knows each other so not only does Morgan know Tessa the young man accused of her murder is a frequent visitor to her home and loved by her children.  Morgan gives up her new job to defend Nick free of charge and is helped by Lance and Sharpe.

Morgan is a strong person but is emotionally fragile and fights her attraction to Lance her character develops well over the course of the story to become a very realistic character which I have grown to expect from Melinda.  This is achieved without the need for big chunks of descriptive text which makes the book fast paced.

Lance has had to put his police career on hold after being injured on duty and is struggling with his mother who suffers from severe mental health illness.  He is working as an investigator for Sharpe while he regains his fitness and understandably has a lot of baggage affecting his ability to act on his feelings for Morgan.

With the 2 major characters working through personal problems and the questions regarding the murder and another missing teenager will the couple ever get together?

The suspense starts at the prologue and builds throughout the book as the reader is led down dead ends in their quest to uncover the murderer making this a real page turner of a book.  The budding romance brings a little relief from the violence of the story.

All in all a very gripping read and well deserves the 5 stars.
