I love the DCI Tom Douglas series by Rachel Abbott they have been totally gripping and very well written and this book is every bit as good if not better.
Rachel has a unique talent for creating and developing the characters of children and teenagers with very effective and realistic results. Scarlet is an amazing character and through the book I found myself loving her and hoping for a happy ending for her.
Natalie is Scarlett’s mother and is trying to cope with the death of her husband and help Scarlett cope with her grief when Bernie dies in a hit and run accident. Natalie is a very good character and again is very realistic and unique character who struggles with life as a single mother and tends to rely on the friends around her maybe a little too much.
The story is very unusual and has many different threads to it that add to the suspense as Tom Douglas and his team juggle cases that have many dead ends while trying to find a way forward.
I found there was maybe a lot more psychological thriller to this book than the previous one with a hint of romance and a little humour thrown in. It is very gripping and full of suspense as the reader is left wondering where the story is going until nearly the very end with a shocker of an epilogue.
I have found writing a review without spoilers was a challenge and will hopefully add and improve this review by publication day.
