What I Never Told You: ‘A dark psychological thriller with a shocking twist’ by Louise Mullins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Read 19/01/2017 – 22/01/2017 Rating 4.8 stars
This is the 2nd book by Louise Mullins that I have read, the 1st being Beautiful Liar which I found a bit slow going. This book, however, is faster paced although it still contains a lot of descriptive text in the first half.
The story begins with a man being charged with the heinous crime of paedophilia. The main storyteller is Teresa who is the mother of the accused, Antony, and other viewpoints come from people who were affected by his actions.
Louise makes an excellent job of examining several issues in this book many of which are mental health issues and expertly discusses the effect of childhood abuse on the lives of the abused that has repercussions for decades.
Throughout the book the characters are built gradually and gain depth as the book progresses. All characters are very realistic and I feel she created a very complex, unique and realistic character with Anthony who, although he doesn’t tell his story, is still the main character in this book.
The ending is a complete shocker but unfortunately it didn’t really work for me. There were also a few scenes that I felt brought nothing to the story hence 4.8 instead of 5 stars.
On the whole this is a unique and gripping book which will appeal to readers of several genres including Contemporary Fiction and Thrillers. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
I received an Advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
