This is the first book I have read by Tara Lyons and I am very impressed.
I like the way Tara hits the ground running with this book and the adrenaline rush begins on the first page and continues throughout the book. The characters are built steadily throughout the book and are realistic and likeable.
The book begins with the discovery of a dead mother and child. While Denis Hamilton is still reeling from the sight of the decomposing bodies he is directed to the scene of a death of a teenage girl and he is thrown into his worst nightmare as the scene reminds him of an event in his past. Hamilton has had major changes within his team and is short staffed and now is struggling with his demons which leaves Fraser feeling abandoned as she is left alone with the girl’s death investigation.
Hamilton manages to get his act together and pull together his fragmented team with the addition of the unique character of Rocky, who is transferred temporarily to help. Rocky brings something special to the team with his uniqueness and I personally love his character.
It becomes clear that there is a serial killer on the loose who is targeting mothers with young children and the race is on to stop him before any more lives are lost.
It is a very complex story with many red herrings and curve balls as we are introduced to Katy who has escaped an abusive marriage with her young son only to find herself on the radar of the serial killer.
The author has expertly created well developed characters and a multi-faceted storyline that grabs the reader from the first page and makes them keep turning the pages. The book is very professionally written and I am disappointed that I didn’t read the first book in the series. It earns 5 stars because I couldn’t find anything bad about it.
