This is book 2 in the Jessica Daniel series and I would recommend reading Book 1 first as a lot of the character building is in the first book and there are events in book 1 that have consequences in this book.
Jessica is trying to come to terms with the disintegration of her friendship with Caroline, who was also her flatmate and also has a new boss. It is a period of great change that sees Jessica struggling.
The story begins with the murders of unsavoury characters that puts Jessica at loggerheads with her new boss. While many feel the murderer is doing a good job eliminating the criminals Jessica sees everybody as a person with a right to justice whatever they have done in the past. It all gets confusing when DNA matches a prisoner serving life.
There are many twists and turns as leads reveal more confusion and Jessica ‘ s mind leads her down the wrong path.
I was a bit unsure about the characters part way through the book as they became more complex but it all connected into a brilliant conclusion.
Excellent book I will be looking for more from this author and I am hoping for further books in this series.
