10 of 10 Dead Guilty -CALLADINE and BAYLISS series by Helen H Durrant #bookreview #detective #crimefiction @hhdurrant @joffebooks

Today is the final of my Calladine and Bayliss series as we have reached the end of all the books published so far with Book 9: DEAD GUILTY.  However, I am sure there are more to come.  I hope you have enjoyed reading.

Dead Guilty (Book 9)

Available from AMAZON

Looking for a brilliant best-selling crime mystery with great detectives?

Detective Calladine and Bayliss hunt for a missing child in a mystery with a shocking ending.

Sophie Alder is the three-year-old daughter of local factory owner, Richard Alder. Richard and his wife Annie are locals from the rough housing estate who’ve made it big.

Plus, there’s a crime wave in Leesworth and the police can’t cope. One thief even dares to break into Calladine’s house.

A number of local men have formed a vigilante group. On one of their patrols they catch the burglar and he ends up dead.

The investigation is complicated and the detectives keep hearing about a shadowy figure called “Street,” the mastermind behind the increase in drugs and theft.

With two more murders and Calladine’s personal life in turmoil, the detectives face against time to find “Street” and the missing child.

In an ending with a huge twist, the detectives find everything they believed is turned upside down.

If you like Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, Mel Sherratt, Ruth Rendell, or Mark Billingham you will enjoy this exciting new crime fiction writer.
DEAD GUILTY is book nine of a new series of detective thrillers featuring D.S. Ruth Bayliss and D.I. Tom Calladine.

THE DETECTIVES
Tom Calladine is a detective inspector who is devoted to his job. His personal life, however, is not so successful. Having been married and divorced before the age of twenty-one has set a pattern that he finds difficult to escape.

Ruth Bayliss is in her mid-thirties, plain-speaking but loyal. She is balancing her professional life with looking after a small child.

THE SETTING
The fictional village of Leesdon on the outskirts of an industrial northern English city. There is little work and a lot of crime. The bane of Calladine’s life is the Hobfield housing estate, breeding ground to all that is wrong with the area that he calls home.

My Review

This is book 9 in the Calladine & Bayliss series but it does work well as stand alone.

A missing 3 year old child, Drugs, vigilantes, burglaries and murder.  Calladine and his team are really up against it.  When a fellow Detective has a heart attack Calladine finds the whole lot is for his team to investigate.

There is a lot going on in this book as the team buckle down to start following leads.  They are getting nowhere fast.  Who is the elusive Street and why are the criminals they have arrested being released?  It smacks of corruption and when Calladine is ordered to back off investigating Street his worst fears are realised.

Reading this series is a bit like coming home. Familiar characters but you always learn something new and the advantage of these books is Helen is such a brilliant author she manages to write the books so you can step in at any point in the series and quickly catch up.  No repetitive text to bore the readers who are following the series but enough to fill in blanks for new readers.

This is a twisty turny book that I simply couldn’t put down there are real shockers all the way through and it is packed with suspense to keep the adrenaline pumping.  WOW what an awesome read and when it gets towards the end and the clues start to link the different threads you think you have worked out what the ending is going to be…..  Wrong!  The ending is a total unexpected mind blowing shock.

An absolutely brilliant read that had me turning page after page.  5 golden stars from me.

Author Bio

Helen sets her books in the area she has lived in for many years. The towns and villages that sit in the shelter of the Pennine hills. This is an area between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills. It offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein.

Helen always planned to write crime novels. But until she retired from full-time work in a local further education college, it had to go on the back burner. Once she did retire – there was no excuse. She now writes full-time. Retirement proper will have to wait!

Currently there are nine books in the ‘Calladine & Bayliss’ series available – Dead Wrong, Dead Silent, Dead List, Dead Lost, Dead & Buried, Dead Nasty, Dead Jealous, Dead Bad, and the latest – Dead Guilty. There is also a box set of the first three books.

Also available are four books in the ‘DI Greco’ series – Dark Murder, Dark Houses, Dark Trade, and the latest – Dark Angel.

There are two books in the DI Matt Brindle series – His Third Victim and The Other Victim.

The DCI Rachel King series has two books – Next Victim and Two Victims

BLOG TOUR WRAP UP – Play Dead (Sam Clayton #3) by Anne Penketh #CrimeFiction #Detective #netgalley #PlayDead @joffebooks

Anne, Joffe Books and I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all the wonderful bloggers, reviewers and readers who helped with the promotion of PLAY DEAD by Anne Penketh. Your help is very much appreciated x

What the reviewers and bloggers thought

Linda Strong Book Reviews

This small picturesque village is known for its lack of crime and friendly residents. DI Clayton and his colleagues have their hands with suspects. Trying to find a motive is almost impossible when it seems everyone has secrets that they will kill to protect. The serial killer they are looking for is smart, and conniving.  Read more here

The Word is Out

The suspense over the identity of the killer was maintained almost to the end, and there was still a shocking turn of events thrown in that was hard to see coming. I shall now go back and enjoy the first two books in this series and await more of DI Clayton and his team in the future. Read more here

Play Dead was an excellent police procedural novel. The police team is at the heart of the book and their investigation takes place before our eyes. There is humour and banter as you would expect from a team and this gives a degree of realism without the hierarchical tensions that are often rife in police books. Read more here

Robin Loves Reading

I found the drama and the intrigue to be equally compelling and I did enjoy the fact that I was left guessing. This really was a great read, and I was able to devour it in one sitting, in part, because I really wanted to know who the killer was. In addition to that, this was a very well-written and engaging story. I look forward to continuing this series as future titles are released. Read more here

Musician Kristina Manning is impaled by her cello spike

The disgraced conductor is found with his head stuffed into a piano. He’s on the brink of death.

Is there a serial killer with a musical edge on the loose?

What does the disappearance of former orchestra member Lauren Garner have to do with it?

A MYSTERY WITH A STUNNING TWIST AND A RACE AGAINST TIME TO STOP A MURDER SPREE

PLAY DEAD is the third in a new series of page-turning crime thrillers set in an atmospheric part of Norfolk. Perfect for fans of LJ Ross, Mel Sherratt, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

My Review

This is book 3 in the Detective Sam Clayton series but the books work perfectly as stand alone.

Why are members of an orchestra dying, seemingly at the hands of their instruments?  That is the question Sam and his team have to find the answer to.  But as more members die the team are struggling to find a motive or a viable suspect.

I loved learning more about the characters and I especially like how Sam’s ex plays a small part bringing a sense of reality to the story and characters.

The story itself is unique I have never read anything quite like this one and I say that in a good way.  Given the number of crime books I read it is rare that I don’t work out who the murderer is but in this book I can honestly say I didn’t have a clue.  I loved the twists and turns and red herrings that ran all the way through the book making for a fast paced read that kept the pages turning all the way to the shocking ending.

A brilliant read I am looking forward to more in this series

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS BOOK WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AS SANDMAN

THE TOUGHEST CASE OF KATE’S CAREER

Missing journalist Ellie Landy is found in the River Parrett by a news crew covering the worst floods the Somerset Levels have suffered in living memory.

A paperback is found by the woman’s bed with a mysterious inscription mentioning “Sandman” and a time of day.

Police assume it is an accidental drowning. Kate disobeys orders from the top and probes the death, as she suspects this was no accident.

When another woman dies in suspicious circumstances, Kate finds herself drawn ever deeper into a nightmare of murder, treachery and perversion.

SHE WILL RISK EVERYTHING TO STOP A SERIAL KILLER, BEFORE THE SANDMAN PUTS ANYONE ELSE TO SLEEP.

DISCOVER A BREATH-TAKING NEW SERIES OF MYSTERIES THAT YOU WON’T WANT TO PUT DOWN

Perfect for fans of Rachel Abbott, Robert Bryndza, Mel Sherratt, Angela Marsons, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

THE DETECTIVES
Kate is a feisty, young police detective, with a dynamic approach to her job. She is plucky and tenacious, but prone to being impetuous and headstrong, which often lands her in tight spots and does not exactly endear her to her crusty boss, DI Ted Roscoe.

In stark contrast to Kate, her detective partner, Hayden, is an overweight, untidy ex-public schoolboy, with a pompous, laid-back attitude, which drives her to distraction. But he is also highly intelligent, with a keen, analytical mind and a practical, reasoned approach to everything, which, with a prevailing wind, can sometimes act as a brake on his partner’s more impulsive actions.

THE SETTING
A patchwork of fields, peat moor and marshland, dotted with picturesque villages and criss-crossed by man-made irrigation ditches or rhynes, the Somerset Levels covers an area of about 160,000 acres between the Mendips and Quantock Hills, in the County of Somerset. Sparsely populated outside the local towns of Bridgwater, Glastonbury and Street and prone to flooding, it is a haven for wild life, a wild, secret place with an atmospheric brooding stillness, which creeps into the very soul; a place where the booming call of a bittern or the beating of an owl’s wings in the mist is bound to fire the imagination of any self-respecting crime novelist, whose thoughts will invariably turn to… murder.

Book 2: REVENGE ON THE LEVELS

Book 4: KILLER ON THE LEVELS

My Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book 4 in the Kate Hamblin series.

The Somerset levels have been subject to abnormal weather, the worst for 250 years, and there is a lot of flooding with Fields and hedgerows hidden underwater it is a difficult time for everyone. Young journalist Ellie is stranded at Lowmoor having travelled there by boat but now has no way of getting back and is being hunted down.

Married to Hayden Kate has her work cut out. While she is a dedicated police officer her husband is laid back verging on lazy. An attempt to cover for the fact that he overslept comes back to bite her when the missing person he is supposedly investigating is found floating in the River Parrett. Kate suspects murder but her superiors always looking at the budgets order her to leave it as accidental drowning. Kates instinct is usually spot on and she is right this time as becomes clear when the pathology reports come in.

What had Ellie stumbled upon that got her killed? As Kate and Hayden continue to investigate on the quiet they soon find themselves getting tangled up in the dark grimy world of drugs.

This is a gripping page turner as we follow Kate into a world of lies, corruption and danger. Another great addition to a brilliant detective series.

My Review

I do like a thriller that takes advantage of the mysteries and superstitions of the area in which it is set and the author has done that excellently with this book.

Kate is still recovering from her experiences at the hands of Twister. Her new husband is in hospital following an accident while they were on honeymoon. She is still a little fragile when a young woman is found strangled in a barn.

Further investigations reveal that the murder is a replica of one 150 years ago. How can that be? As Kate delves into the history of the area more murders are committed with the same MO.

With no clues and Detective Ansell back waiting for her to fail Kate is really up against it. When Roscoe becomes focussed on ‘the one that got away’ several years ago and no leads will the team manage to solve this one or will it remain another unsolved murder along with the 150 year old one.

This is a very intriguing read with a lot of unlikely suspects and no motives or link between the victims. The suspense builds throughout the book all the way to the end. A very gripping read.

My Review

This is book 2 in the DCI Rachel King series set in Manchester.  We first met Rachel and her team in Next Victim which was a brilliant introduction to the series.

Rachel’s domestic life adds an interesting vein to the series as does her past.  Divorced (with her ex husband living next door), Rachel is trying to juggle a demanding career with the problems that come with bringing up 2 teenage girls.  Megan is at university and that brings its own issues whereas Mia is still at school., suffering from Type 1 diabetes and also nearly losing her life in a kidnapping it is understandable that both Rachel and Megan are protective of her.

The book itself is fast-paced with the suspense beginning on the first page and building all the way through.  There are several things going on the keep the reader totally engrossed in the story.

The body of a young woman is found in a ditch.  She has been shot and while forensics are searching for clues another body is found, this one a teenage girl.  To add to the issues faced by Rachel and her team the bodies are on land being developed by Jed McAteer.  Jed is a loveable rogue from Rachel’s university days who keeps popping up where he isn’t wanted.  Rachel and Jed share a secret, one that could destroy Rachel’s life and career.

As the team begin investigating they uncover more wrongdoings and a DCI from another station starts to muscle in on the action.  People trafficking, sex slaves and worse are all thrown into the mix. As cases become entwined can Rachel hold on to her suspect and find justice for the dead?

This is a twisty turny book that had me hooked at the very first page and kept giving all the way to the totally unexpected ending.  An absolutely brilliant read.  I cant wait for the next book in this series.

OVER 750,000 books sold of her Calladine & Bayliss and DI Greco Series

I’m one of the ‘baby boomer’ generation. I was born in Edinburgh to an English father and Scottish mother. My father was from the North West of England and this was where the family settled.
I know the area well, both the good and the bad, and so I set my books here. Sitting between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills, it offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein. I always planned to write crime novels — to create the characters in my books. Since my retirement from a busy teaching job in FE, this is what I’ve done — almost to exclusion of anything else!
I have a grown-up family and five grandchildren. They see me as something of an eccentric — always on my laptop writing away. Writing is something of a second career and, despite having a bus pass, keeps me busy, young and tuned in the world as it currently is.

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

As is usual in Joy Ellis’ novels, the story grabs hold of the reader and won’t let go. Work and food are off the menu until the reader reaches the last page and then there is the dreadful disappointment of knowing that the book is finished and that the reader will have to wait for the next book. The Word is Out

This story is full of the wonderful characters that have grown to be so popular as the series has progressed and much of this is due to how warm and human they are. The plot is clever and beautifully plotted, and draws the reader through a dark trail of clues and suspects to the final exciting chapters as the culprit is revealed in an ending that still has a few surprises.

It has everything needed to build the story and keep me reading anyway. The writing is fantastic and you feel like you actually are in the middle of the investigations going on around you! A must read for me! Read more here

I enjoyed the mix of historical detail, professional police work and personal relationships that the book contained. Joy Ellis uses a lot of dialogue to forward the plot developments rather than long descriptions: this has the effect of making the characters more prominent and developed. Read more here

Throughout the book there are lots of tantalising clues as to who is doing it, but also lots of little red herrings, making it tricky to work out exactly what is happening. This book did drag slightly in places, but overall I was hooked as I loved the book and couldn’t wait to get to the conclusion and find out who was doing it.  Read more here

DARKNESS ON THE FENS publish.jpgDarkness on the Fens (Nikki Galena #10) by Joy Ellis

Available from AMAZON

Do you love addictive detective mysteries? Then try this book by a multiple #1 best-selling author now. You won’t be able to put it down. It’s a totally enthralling read.

A SERIAL KILLER ON A POISONOUS MISSION PUSHES NIKKI AND HER TEAM TO BREAKING POINT

Revellers are flocking into Greenborough for the yearly Dark Greenborough Festival, a three-day event celebrating local folklore, superstition and the darker side of life.

What the public doesn’t know is that there has been a warning sent to the police, saying that Greenborough will be a very dangerous place this year. The anonymous letter ends with the Latin phrase, Mors certa, hora incerta: Death is certain, the hour uncertain.

DI Nikki Galena and her team soon discover this is no hoax, as people start dying from what appears to be alcoholic poisoning. Things rapidly escalate, and as the deaths get more horrific, Nikki realises they have a serial killer in their midst.

A NIGHTMARE HUNT FOR A KILLER DURING THEIR BUSIEST TIME OF THE YEAR.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the heart-stopping ending.

This is book ten of the international best-selling books featuring Nikki Galena.

THE DETECTIVE
DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on criminals but fiercely loyal to her team.

HER PARTNER
DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has a daughter and an ex-wife who wants his attention.

THE SETTING
The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

My Review

Ahhh book 10.  Settling down to read a Nikki Galena book is like having a catch up with a dear friend.

The character is sheer brilliance, feisty, caring, resourceful and unique.  I have read all this series (well I have read every book Joy Ellis has written) and thought I knew all there was to know about Nikki but while reading this I realised the character still has plenty more to give.

Her partner, Joseph Easton, is the perfect balance to Nikki.  He is calm, rational and sensitive.  But, like with Nikki, there is more to learn about his character.  Emotionally damaged by his military past Joseph sometimes has difficulty holding it all together.  His determination to protect the people he loves has no boundaries.

Then there is the story, Dark Greenborough!  The title of this book is probably the most perfect title I have seen in a long time, Darkness on the Fens, it is that alright.  Someone is committing heinous murders.  Victims are suffering agonising deaths and nobody can help just stand there and watch the suffering.  On its own this would be bad enough but it is Dark Greenborough weekend and the area is full of strangers dressed as evil characters from the past.  The perfect cover for a murderer.  Nikki and her team are up against it even with the help of Morgan and Connor the clues are very elusive.  Can this maniac be stopped?

This is a fast-paced, adrenaline pumping read.  Joy Ellis at her very best.  I started turning the pages and couldn’t stop savouring every page and wondering what will happen next all the way to the explosive ending.  WOW!  The best Joy Ellis book yet.  Yes I know I always say that but it is always true this author gets better book by book and I hope she has plenty more to give.

5 Golden stars from me.

UK #1 Best Seller with THEIR LOST DAUGHTERS and THE FOURTH FRIEND

Over 1 million books sold!

“I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the sixties and seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!

And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and our four Springer spaniels. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I write full time, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; I find I have an in-house consultant on hand to make sure that the police and judicial procedure is correct. She also makes very good tea! I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!

A divisive, confusing, heart stopping race against time. Still it isn’t over yet. Harrowing suspense and split second timing. Will it be enough? Nobody writes Police Officers the way Charlie Gallagher does. They’re real. They’re vulnerable.  They’re human. …more Read more here

This is the 3rd in the Maddie Ives series that gets better as it goes on! This story is, to be honest, a brutal and horrific one, but it just adds to the realism of todays policing and the world we live in.  Read more here

As always there are a lot of different things going on in the story, which all appear unrelated but Charlie manages to tie them all up nicely in the end. My Review

This is book 3 in the Maddie Ives series.

The adrenaline starts pumping at the beginning when a child covered in blood walks in front of a car.  Quite where this fits into the story isn’t clear until much later on.

Harry is dealing with some personal issues that give the reader a lot more insight into the character.  The fatal accident that cost his wife her life comes back to haunt him and sees Harry struggling between right and wrong especially when his daughter’s mental health is thrown into the mix.

Then there is the story which is complicated and it is this complexity that causes so many problems for the investigation.  No clues and something dark and evil is going on.  Can Maddie and Harry get a handle on what is actually going on before more people die?

This is an intriguing book that keeps the reader turning pages as we join Maddie and Harry in trying to work out what is going on, who is behind it and why.

Another great story.
