ADVENT BOOK BLOG Mar-2018 (2) – Unworthy #detective #crimefiction @stewartgiles

Advent Book Blog day 6 and in the limelight it is UNWORTHY by one of my favourite authors: Stewart Giles. This was actually the first book I read in his self-published series but I have since read every one of his books several times and love them more each time. This one, however, holds a special place in my heart for many reasons.

UNWORTHY (DS Jason Smith #8)

Available from AMAZON UK   US   AU   CA

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

THE UNWORTHY MUST PAY.

DS Jason Smith is dragged away from paternity leave when a woman is killed with her baby in the next room. When more women with children are brutally murdered, Smith discovers that they all have something in common – they all share a secret. When he finds out that the mother of his own child is on this list of ‘Unworthy’ women, he finds himself in a race against time to stop the killer before his whole world comes crashing down around him.

An action packed thriller filled with the twists, turns and red herrings we expect from Stewart Giles.  This is an edge of your seat page-turner that will appeal to all readers of crime fiction

My Review

This book gripped me from the very first page and I can confirm that it works perfectly as stand alone.

Somebody is murdering mothers of small children and leaving the word UNWORTHY at the crime scene.  Why are these women unworthy and who is playing judge, jury and executioner?  Jason Smith is dragged from leave to find out.  As the murderer gets too close for comfort all bets are off as Smith becomes determined to stop this person before it is too late.

This is a real roller coaster of a book that had me turning page after page to find out what happens next.  The adrenaline keeps pumping right to the very end  where we are treated to a real shocker of an ending.

Jason Smith has grown and developed throughout the series into a complex, realistic character.  He has a baby with Erica, who is another member of the team and is currently on maternity leave.  His superior is Bryony Brownhill and I am sure there is a lot yet to be discovered about this character.

Stewart is a brilliant author and his books are dark but also have a little humour woven in to the story to offset the darkness which makes them a real unputdownable read.

Definitely worth the 5 stars. I am really looking forward to The Enigma which is book 1 in a new series featuring Jason Smith and also Harriet Taylor from Stewart’s other series.

THE SETTING

York is a historic walled city in North Yorkshire, England.

At the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss, York is the traditional county town of the historic county of Yorkshire. York Minster and a variety of cultural and sporting activities make it a popular tourist destination.

THE DETECTIVES

DS Jason Smith is an Australian who was sent to York to live with his Grandmother when his sister disappeared from a beach.  He has suffered many losses in his short life and is now a dedicated detective.  He is a bit of a loose cannon he has his own way of doing things and that doesn’t always mean following orders and procedures.

DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond.  She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

Stewart Giles – Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live. After Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later. 3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series. The Beekeeper hit the shelves and hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well. The third in the series, The Backpacker I have self-published and is now available.

THE BEEKEEPER (DC Harriet Taylor #1) by Stewart Giles

The BeekeeperTHE BEEKEEPER (DC Harriet Taylor #1)

Available from Amazon UK  US   AU   CA

A shocking discovery starts a trail of mayhem on the Cornish coast.

My Review

This is a brilliant book.  The Author takes what should be gory and makes it amusing, with an enormous amount of skill, and the result is a gripping book that has the reader turning page after page.

This is possibly the funniest thriller I have ever read.  Stewart has a dark sense of humour that comes through in the book which brings a totally unique perspective to the story.  I found it very intriguing.  I suspected who the killer was at the beginning but what you have learned from reading thrillers over the years is ingrained into you and you find yourself denying what is actually staring you in the face.  The characters are unique but develop well throughout the book and the story is also different I was very impressed.

I love Alice’s character, she is a lot of fun.  An eccentric old lady who has had a rough life with a philandering husband who had  a habit of disappearing for long periods with his latest fling.  He eventually left 10 years ago and hasn’t returned.  She makes a living from the honey produced by her beekeeping.  She has a Jackdaw that she rescued who is her main companion and a friend Millie.  Millie is widowed and a fragile person who is dominated by Alice.

Detective Harriet Taylor has also had a difficult life.  Her husband was killed in a car crash with his lover also in the car.  She became the laughing stock of the Police Force in Edinburgh so transferred to Polgarrow, a quiet town in Cornwall.  She is picking up the pieces of her life and has a good relationship with her boss, Killion, when half a body is caught up in the nets of a fishing boat.  Shortly afterwards Millie goes missing and her car is found at the bottom of the cliffs.  When  a house explodes the decision is made to bring in a crack team from Exeter.  When Harriet is chosen to be part of this team she finds herself, again, the talking stock of the station.  The similarity in their history forms a connection between Alice and Harriet.

After reading English & Drama at three different English Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling and finally ended up in South Africa, where I still live. I enjoy the serene life running a boat shop on the banks of the Vaal Dam. I came up with the DS Jason Smith idea after my wife dropped a rather large speaker on my head. Whether it was intentional still remains a mystery. Smith, the first in the series was finished in September 2013 and was closely followed by Boomerang and Ladybird. Occam’s Razor, Harlequin and Phobia (a series of short stories detailing Smith’s early life) were all completed in one hazy 365 days and Selene was done and dusted a few months later.

Phobia (an essential introduction to the DS Jason Smith Series) by Stewart Giles

Phobia (DS Smith #0.5) – AN ESSENTIAL INTRODUCTION TO THE DS SMITH THRILLER SERIES.

Available from AMAZON

AN ESSENTIAL INTRODUCTION TO THE DS SMITH THRILLER SERIES.

Phobia is a series of five DS Jason Smith cases he worked on before we met him in the first book ‘Smith’. We get insights into what moulded him into the Detective Sergeant we first get a glimpse of in ‘Smith’. Smith quickly realizes that police work isn’t always cut and dried. Justice is not always black and white; there are many shades of grey in between.
If you like Police Procedurals, then this is a series you won’t want to miss.

DS Thompson is of the same rank as Jason, but he doesn’t have the same support or success. He and Jason have a love/hate relationship which brings a bit of humour to the series. Thompson is old school and thinks his age should give him respect and privileges, but life doesn’t work that way for him.

DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond. She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

Smith sets off for the peaceful Yorkshire village of Scarpdale for two weeks of country air, slow walks by the lakes and no mobile phone reception. He wakes up on his first morning to find three policemen outside his room. A young woman has been found dead next to one of the lakes. Smith was seen talking to the woman the night before.

Smith is begged by Jimmy Phoenix to find out what happened to his daughter. Against his better judgment, Smith agrees and starts to ask questions, but the locals are not giving anything away. When Sophie’s boyfriend, Lewis Van Camp is found dead an hour before her funeral, Smith is baffled. Lewis was his odds on favourite for Sophie’s murder.

Smith quickly realizes that rival horse breeders, the Van Camps and the Phoenix’s are involved somehow. Everybody he speaks to talks of something that happened in New York the previous summer; something sinister involving these horsemen but nobody seems to know exactly what went on.

An action packed thriller filled with the twists, turns and red herrings we expect from Stewart Giles. This is an edge of your seat page-turner that will appeal to all readers of crime fiction.

The book kept me guessing all the way to the end, and even when Smith was talking to the murderer I still didn’t realise until he finally confessed and everything fell into place. Read more here

Oh my goodness gracious me, ‘Horsemen’ is one seriously, stonkingly well written and fantastic book.  The author certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and much like a hypnotist, he keeps you under the book’s spell until the moment you close the back cover.    Read more here

This is another exciting adventure for Jason and his colleagues. It’s a fast romp through the world of horses and horsemen. It’s a brutal cut-throat business where secrets remain hidden and everyone lies. Jason certainly has his hands full this time.  Read more here

DC Erica Whitton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond. She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

My thoughts

This review is for the newly updated and re-edited version

I love this series. The books just get better and better and this one is no different.

I am pleased to see Smith starting to mature and get it together with Whitton. They make a brilliant team both personally and professionally. I also like the humour Stewart has run through the books especially with Chalmers and Smyth I can actually see that happening in real life.

The story revolves around the people with big money the underlying theme being ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’

Smith is planning a break away from all the evil and death in his private and professional life but first he needs to solve the McDonalds robberies that are taking place around the city. This brings him face to face with Jimmy Phoenix, a self made millionaire.

The McDonalds case closed Smith sets off for the Yorkshire wilderness but typical of Smith’s world a break is not going to happen anytime soon.

Love, love, love this story. There are so many twists and turns as Smith tries to untangle secrets and the intrigue builds right to the end. As is typical the ending is a totally unexpected.

Characters that grow with every book, a unique story with twists, turns and red herrings this is everything a crime thriller should be and more. A must read for lovers of great detective stories.

5 golden stars from me.

SELENE (DS Jason Smith #6) by Stewart Giles

Selene (DS Jason Smith #6)

Available from AMAZON

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

A man is found tucked up in bed with his throat sliced open two days after Christmas.

DS Jason Smith and his team are baffled. It appears he has been drugged, killed and carefully wrapped up in a duvet. The only evidence Smith finds are some strands of hair belonging to a woman. One month later, another man is killed in exactly the same manner but there appears to be no link whatsoever to the two men apart from the fact that they were both single, lonely and middle-aged.

Haunted by lucid dreams and terrifying double awakenings, Smith stumbles upon something that will send him on a hunt for the most baffling murderer the people of York has ever seen. With time quickly running out before the next full moon and the safety of one of his closest colleagues entering the equation, Smith finally closes in on the most terrifying murderer he has ever come across.

This is a roller-coaster ride of a thriller with twists and turns all the way to an ending you won’t expect.

If you like Police Procedurals, then this is a series you won’t want to miss.

What the readers are saying:

Black Books Blog

The story follows Smith and the team as they investigate the murder of two men, who are not connected in anyway and are killed almost a month apart.  With no new leads the new DI brings in a psychiatrist she has used in the past to see if she can work out who the murderer is and why they are killing in the way they are.  Read more here

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

This is the sixth in the Jason Smith series and I have to say that these books get better and better. I’m enjoying the insight into Smith’s character and, although at first I thought the writer had made a mistake by showing how immature Smith was in the first book, his character is developing from book to book and I now bow down to the author’s superior knowledge. Smith is growing with each book.  Read more here

I enjoyed the twists in this book and the ending was great. The characters were excellent as always and it was great to see the relationships develop even further as the team struggled to crack on of the hardest cases they have faced to date.  Read more here

Each of the books in this series is better than the last. Jason Smith has become one of my favorite characters. I really enjoy the mix of professional and personal.
