Phobia (an essential introduction to the DS Jason Smith Series) by Stewart Giles

Phobia (DS Smith #0.5) – AN ESSENTIAL INTRODUCTION TO THE DS SMITH THRILLER SERIES.

Available from AMAZON

AN ESSENTIAL INTRODUCTION TO THE DS SMITH THRILLER SERIES.

Phobia is a series of five DS Jason Smith cases he worked on before we met him in the first book ‘Smith’. We get insights into what moulded him into the Detective Sergeant we first get a glimpse of in ‘Smith’. Smith quickly realizes that police work isn’t always cut and dried. Justice is not always black and white; there are many shades of grey in between.
If you like Police Procedurals, then this is a series you won’t want to miss.

THE SETTING
York is a historic walled city in North Yorkshire, England.
At the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss, York is the traditional county town of the historic county of Yorkshire. York Minster and a variety of cultural and sporting activities make it a popular tourist destination.

THE DETECTIVES
DS Jason Smith is an Australian who was sent to York to live with his Grandmother when his sister disappeared from a beach. He has suffered many losses in his short life and is now a dedicated detective. He is a bit of a loose cannon he has his own way of doing things and that doesn’t always mean following orders and procedures.

DS Thompson is of the same rank as Jason, but he doesn’t have the same support or success. He and Jason have a love/hate relationship which brings a bit of humour to the series. Thompson is old school and thinks his age should give him respect and privileges, but life doesn’t work that way for him.

DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond. She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

My Thoughts:

I have to say this is an absolutely brilliant way of bringing the reader up to date with the time before Smith became a DS.  I haven’t seen this done before we usually get snippets throughout the series that you need to put together or a prequel novella so this was an enlightening breath of fresh air.  Read more here

The Perfect Murder (DC Harriet Taylor #2 ) by Stewart Giles

THE PERFECT MURDER (Detective Harriet Taylor #2) by Stewart Giles

Available from Amazon  UK   US   AU   CA

From #1 best-selling author Stewart Giles comes the new mystery set on the Cornish coast. Where the pretty villages and towns hold some very dark secrets.

COULD YOU COMMIT THE PERFECT MURDER?

Two cats are found mutilated in the same town. Detective Harriet Taylor is reluctant to investigate, but then one of their owners is killed a bizarre way that same day.

Harriet and the team step in. The dead woman has four words written on her neck — four very ambiguous words.

Then another body turns up with the same words written on it. Harriet fears the worst — a serial killer is on the loose in the small Cornish town of Trotterdown.

Can Harriet stop the murders and work out the connection to the local writing group who, conveniently enough, have been set the task of writing stories on the theme of “the perfect murder”?

A crime mystery with a touch of black humour. You’ll enjoy this fast-paced and dark unearthing of the secrets of a sleepy Cornish community.

This is a cleverly written crime thriller … with just a hint of humor. Taylor is a great character… she really gets involved in this case and picks up clues that no one else seems to get. Her ‘gut feeling’ is her guiding light. Read more here

Author Bio

After reading English & Drama at three different English Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling and finally ended up in South Africa, where I still live. I enjoy the serene life running a boat shop on the banks of the Vaal Dam.

I came up with the DS Jason Smith idea after my wife dropped a rather large speaker on my head. Whether it was intentional still remains a mystery. Smith, the first in the series was finished in September 2013 and was closely followed by Boomerang and Ladybird. Occam’s Razor, Harlequin and Phobia (a series of short stories detailing Smith’s early life) were all completed in one hazy 365 days and Selene was done and dusted a few months later.

HORSEMEN (DS Jason Smith #7) by Stewart Giles

Horsemen (DS Jason Smith #7)

Available from AMAZON

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

One draining murder investigation after another has left DS Jason on the brink of losing his sanity and he needs a break.

Smith sets off for the peaceful Yorkshire village of Scarpdale for two weeks of country air, slow walks by the lakes and no mobile phone reception. He wakes up on his first morning to find three policemen outside his room. A young woman has been found dead next to one of the lakes. Smith was seen talking to the woman the night before.

Smith is begged by Jimmy Phoenix to find out what happened to his daughter. Against his better judgment, Smith agrees and starts to ask questions, but the locals are not giving anything away. When Sophie’s boyfriend, Lewis Van Camp is found dead an hour before her funeral, Smith is baffled. Lewis was his odds on favourite for Sophie’s murder.

Smith quickly realizes that rival horse breeders, the Van Camps and the Phoenix’s are involved somehow. Everybody he speaks to talks of something that happened in New York the previous summer; something sinister involving these horsemen but nobody seems to know exactly what went on.

An action packed thriller filled with the twists, turns and red herrings we expect from Stewart Giles. This is an edge of your seat page-turner that will appeal to all readers of crime fiction.

My thoughts

This review is for the newly updated and re-edited version

I love this series. The books just get better and better and this one is no different.

I am pleased to see Smith starting to mature and get it together with Whitton. They make a brilliant team both personally and professionally. I also like the humour Stewart has run through the books especially with Chalmers and Smyth I can actually see that happening in real life.

The story revolves around the people with big money the underlying theme being ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’

Smith is planning a break away from all the evil and death in his private and professional life but first he needs to solve the McDonalds robberies that are taking place around the city. This brings him face to face with Jimmy Phoenix, a self made millionaire.

The McDonalds case closed Smith sets off for the Yorkshire wilderness but typical of Smith’s world a break is not going to happen anytime soon.

Love, love, love this story. There are so many twists and turns as Smith tries to untangle secrets and the intrigue builds right to the end. As is typical the ending is a totally unexpected.

Characters that grow with every book, a unique story with twists, turns and red herrings this is everything a crime thriller should be and more. A must read for lovers of great detective stories.

5 golden stars from me.

After Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later. 3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series. The Beekeeper hit the shelves and hit the number one spot in Australia. SELENE (DS Jason Smith #6) by Stewart Giles

Selene (DS Jason Smith #6)

Available from AMAZON

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

A man is found tucked up in bed with his throat sliced open two days after Christmas.

DS Jason Smith and his team are baffled. It appears he has been drugged, killed and carefully wrapped up in a duvet. The only evidence Smith finds are some strands of hair belonging to a woman. One month later, another man is killed in exactly the same manner but there appears to be no link whatsoever to the two men apart from the fact that they were both single, lonely and middle-aged.

Haunted by lucid dreams and terrifying double awakenings, Smith stumbles upon something that will send him on a hunt for the most baffling murderer the people of York has ever seen. With time quickly running out before the next full moon and the safety of one of his closest colleagues entering the equation, Smith finally closes in on the most terrifying murderer he has ever come across.

This is a roller-coaster ride of a thriller with twists and turns all the way to an ending you won’t expect.

If you like Police Procedurals, then this is a series you won’t want to miss.

What the readers are saying:

The story follows Smith and the team as they investigate the murder of two men, who are not connected in anyway and are killed almost a month apart.  With no new leads the new DI brings in a psychiatrist she has used in the past to see if she can work out who the murderer is and why they are killing in the way they are.  Read more here

This is the sixth in the Jason Smith series and I have to say that these books get better and better. I’m enjoying the insight into Smith’s character and, although at first I thought the writer had made a mistake by showing how immature Smith was in the first book, his character is developing from book to book and I now bow down to the author’s superior knowledge. Smith is growing with each book.  Read more here

The action rushes on until we are given all the answers at the end. (I won’t spoil it!)
Stewart Giles books are always a pleasure to read with so many ins and outs and possible perpetrators. The reader is kept on the edge of his/her seat and, I find, ignores everything in order to reach the end of the story. I enjoyed The Backpacker; I found it fast-paced, energetic with just enough, um, fluff…. Sorry Stewart, I can’t think of a better word.

I enjoyed the waiting until the very end for the climax, although I had guessed correctly by about 90% who the murderer was. I liked the fact that a step forward seemed to take the team back two steps at some points.  Read more here

What a book, and strong female lead. I was hooked from the first chapter. Set in rural Cornwall, a place I can easily identify with, and see while I read. Switching from the past and present had me guessing how the stories linked and intertwined with one another. The characters were every one you know and can relate too, we’ve all met these people in our lives, which helps connect the reader to the story, and you forget it’s fiction.  Read more here

My Review

This book gripped me from the very first page and I can confirm that it works perfectly as stand alone.

Somebody is murdering mothers of small children and leaving the word UNWORTHY at the crime scene.  Why are these women unworthy and who is playing judge, jury and executioner?  Jason Smith is dragged from leave to find out.  As the murderer gets too close for comfort all bets are off as Smith becomes determined to stop this person before it is too late.

This is a real roller coaster of a book that had me turning page after page to find out what happens next.  The adrenaline keeps pumping right to the very end  where we are treated to a real shocker of an ending.

Jason Smith has grown and developed throughout the series into a complex, realistic character.  He has a baby with Erica, who is another member of the team and is currently on maternity leave.  His superior is Bryony Brownhill and I am sure there is a lot yet to be discovered about this character.

Stewart is a brilliant author and his books are dark but also have a little humour woven in to the story to offset the darkness which makes them a real unputdownable read.

Definitely worth the 5 stars. I am really looking forward to the next book which is book 1 in a new series featuring Jason Smith and also Harriet Taylor from Stewart’s other series.

DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond.  She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

Stewart Giles – Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well. The third in the series, The Backpacker I have self-published and is now available.

HARLEQUIN (DS Jason Smith #5) by Stewart Giles

Harlequin (DS Jason Smith #5)

Available from AMAZON UK  US   AU

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

The circus comes to town and children start to disappear.

Detective Sergeant Jason Smith is persuaded to return to work after three weeks of a marijuana induced haze. Forced to endure the leadership of a new DI, the fulsome Bryony Brownhill, Smith is faced with the most difficult investigation of his colourful career.

When the children who vanished are found murdered in various parts of the city, all clues lead to the circus grounds, but Smith and his team are met with a sinister silence everywhere they turn.

Smith digs deeper and discovers the cause of this silence; the chain of events that led up to the vile murders that have shattered the hearts of the people of York.
This is an edge-of-your-seat thriller with an ending that you won’t expect.

If you like Police Procedurals, then this is a series you won’t want to miss.

What the readers are saying

Black Books Blog

This book is a lot more intense than the previous ones as it involves the kidnapping and murder of children, and also what appears to be unrelated murders to start with, until Smith has investigated and finally found the link.  Read more here

Another brilliant installment from DS Jason Smith! I absolutely love these books and cannot wait for the next one!  Read more here

For me, ‘Harlequin’ is simply unputdownable.  Mind you that has been the case for me with all of the books of the DS Smith series so far.  The author’s writing style is such that you can’t help but be drawn into the story and Stewart reels you in like a fisherman would reel in a fish.  Read more here

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

I love the Jason Smith books. Having read the series from the beginning, I feel as though I have travelled the writing journey along with the author and I feel proud of the quality of the novels he is producing. I’m also amazed at the twists and turns in the plot and feel so satisfied when it all comes together at the end. I would recommend to all lovers of police/crime fiction.  Read more here

Donna’s Book Blog

I am really enjoying this series so couldn’t wait to start this one and I certainly wasn’t disappointed, I think it is probably the best book in the series so far. I was gripped right from the start and read the book the same day I started it.  Read more here

This is an action-packed page turner with some twists and turns along the way leading to a very surprising ending. Read more here

On the Shelf Reviews

Like all the Smith books, there’s plenty of action packed into it’s pages and never a dull moment. This one stands out a little from the rest as I found it a little disturbing and after reading it, I’ll probably never look at clowns the same way again (a bit like when I watched IT earlier in the year).  Read more here

Creepy circus, jugglers, clowns and kids going missing. Sounds like my own nightmares in book form. A firm favourite this time, and better yet I’m off to York this month, so I’ll be wandering the town imagining the characters and locations Asni do so. Great one to get me in the Halloween mood. Creepy page turner.  Read more here

OCCAM’S RAZOR (DS Jason Smith #4) by Stewart Giles

Occam’s Razor (DS Jason Smith #4)

Available from AMAZON

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

A football player is shot dead in front of a packed crowd of people.

DS Jason Smith is put in charge of the investigation. The murder weapon is found in a house across the road from the football ground. It is a rare Russian army issue sniper rifle. As the investigation hits dead end after dead end, two government agents arrive and take over, pushing Smith and his colleagues to the side. As more people die Smith quickly realises these agents are not who they claim to be. He is forced into the dark world of these phantoms and he finds himself at the mercy of his old nemesis; the man who kidnapped his sister years earlier..
This is a gripping thriller with twists and turns all the way to the stunning ending.

If you like Police Procedurals, then this is a series you won’t want to miss.

What the readers are saying:

Black Books Blog

This book starts off with a bang when a goalkeeper gets shot on the pitch at York Town FC straight after he has saved the penalty which gets them promoted.

Whilst Smith and the team are investigating this another football player is gunned down in the middle of the street, and another has his son kidnapped.  Read more here

OMFG this was one seriously flipping fantastic rollercoaster ride of a read.  The author’s writing style is such that he manages to entice you into his web from the first word on the first page and before you know it you are hooked on the book with no chance of escape- not that I would want to escape from DS Jason Smith in any case.   Read more here

On the Shelf Reviews

Nothing like a bit of DS Smith to get you out of a reading slump! This is the fourth in the Smith series, while I suppose it can be read as a stand alone, I would suggest to read a few of the previous books (You can read my review of the previous book Ladybird here) just because you may miss some of the recurring story lines from the other novels.  Read more here

Another Jason Smith novel and I looked forward to reading it, knowing that I was in line for a great time. I want to read each of these books quickly so that I get to the surprise ending but I also want to read them slowly so that I can enjoy every little clue and turn of phrase. Set in York (brilliant!), Jason is a detective sergeant with a team of detectives around him. I love their characters – they are all different and they each have their own little quirks which make them human and so real!  Read more here
