What the bloggers thought:

Black Books Blog

The story has loads of twists and surprises throughout, which makes it a great read, although it is definitely showing it’s age with some of the comments and generalisations. These don’t take away from the story as long as you remember it is set, and was written, back in the 1970’s.  Read more here

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

It is a really good story and without the usual over-indulgence in the process of law and so is much more interesting. Even though I had guessed the real reason for the murder before the end, it was still a thrilling ride and I enjoyed it immensely. I am looking forward to the sixth one!  Read more here

In short, I loved reading this book and for me, ‘Murder In The Mine’ is easily the best book of the series so far.  The DCI John Crow series just keeps getting better and better.  I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.  Read more here

There is plenty of intrigue, a few unexpected twists, and several suspects. Crow is finely drawn and it’s really fun seeing him crime solving .. especially as this story takes place well before DNA, smart phones, and Crow has nothing but instinct and a great mind to go on.  Read more here

I started reading this with an open mind and found I really enjoyed the feel of the book, which was added to by the fact it was told in first person, giving the effect of an old 196’s style detective noir book, with Detective Rebecca Everheart making an interesting detective.  Read more here

I really enjoyed how the lady detectives interacted with each other while learning to work together … some humor, some snapping. But then they learn they have something .. or someone .. in common. I look forward to seeing how their relationship develops in the future. Mystery Thriller Week

This is great crime fiction. I love where the story begins and gives you a sense of motion; but also leaves you with a healthy dose of suspense. Silent Murder has everything you need to feed your crime addiction! Depth of character with good point of view. Sufficient tension and conflict, plot twists, mysterious crimes. A creative and unpredictable plot. I was hooked!  I literally felt part of every scene. I’m a fan. Can’t wait to see what E.R. Fallon has coming down the pike.  Read more here

For me, ‘Silent Murder’ is really well written.  The way in which the author has written the story reminds me of the way that Sue Grafton used to write her Kinsey Milhone series.  The text reads as if it is Everhart herself is narrating the story, which makes the story all the more realistic.  I really like and enjoy this way of telling the story.  The author’s writing style is such that she entices you in and keeps you under her ‘spell’ until the moment you get to the end of the book.  That’s what happened to me at any rate.  The story definitely starts with a bang and maintains the pace throughout.  Read more here

A new detective arrives on the scene from Vice to lend a hand but the two women are like water and oil that I thought would never mix and at times I just wanted to knock their heads together. But before the tit for tats can get too over the top another victim is found with the same horrific injuries as the first. Then a connection is made between the two dead men. There is little trust between the pair of detectives and in the areas they will be working in that could cost one of them their life.  Read more here

My Review

This is book 5 in the Inspector Crow series but works very well as stand-alone.

A body is found while rescuing a dog who has fallen down a mine shaft and Inspector Crow is brought in to help with the investigation.

However, Crow’s role is advisory and he finds that brings with it the expected problems.

What first appears to be a case of a woman upsetting the wrong man takes on a life of its own as it becomes more complex with a lot of false leads.

Wales is well known for the way communities stick together and reject outsiders and this story uses that to make a very interesting story as people protect others and the investigations becomes very entangled with old relationships taking a part.

A very intriguing read that kept the pages turning. Highly recommended to readers who like the older type murder mysteries.

I really enjoyed the book as I was left guessing all the way through, and knew there would be more than the one murder so was trying to work everything out with Rachel and her team.

Musings of a tired mummy

I really enjoyed this book and had no idea of the identitiy of the killer. The loose ends were tied up nicely and there is plenty of scope for developing the police characters and their relationships in later books (I’m hoping for sequels!)
The descriptions of the violence, murder ands and post mortems are not particularly graphic. There is a good balance between the viewpoint of the murderer and that of Rachel and her colleagues.
Rachel is a good lead character and her past mistakes and difficult present make her a more believeable and relatable person so she appeals to the reader.  Read more here

I am a big fan of this author. Her crime fiction books are always well-written, action-packed, with characters that are unforgettable. I have never been disappointed in her story telling. I enjoy how Rachel’s personal life is intertwined with her professional life. Her team are memorable, as well, finely defined. It’s suspenseful that leads to a surprising ending.  Read more here

Life in rose tinted glasses

I liked the twists in the book, and there were a few of them, including the compulsory red herring in a crime novel. However, I did figure out the identity of the killer about halfway through the novel, and the got frustrated that it seemed to take the police so long to figure it.

I would definitely recommend the book, and it looks like it’s part of a series. I would gladly read the ones that follow because there is so much scope for character development and I would love to see where the series takes them.  Read more here

I couldn’t put this book down and the ending floored me because I certainly hadn’t thought of it. This is the first in a new series and I can’t wait to read the next one. This is just great crime fiction. The victim. The body. The killer. The ensuing investigation. The demonstration of his M.O. and motivation for his work. I always enjoy when there’s a formidable antagonist in the mix. I prefer stories when the killer’s point of view is used early on versus later in the book. That, with detective Rachel King’s life creates a more powerful story. In other words, Helen Durrant knows how to deliver! I’m definitely  recommending this series.  Read more

My Review

After a difficult case Detective Rebecca Everhart returns to work to find she has a new partner to work with and a dismembered body to investigate.  The situation gets worse as the pathologist informs them the victim was tortured and was alive when his limbs were cut off with a chainsaw.

The prime suspect is someone Rebecca has history with and also someone she is warned to stay away from.

A difficult case, no clues and a new partner leaves Rebecca struggling then another body turns up….

The story is told in the first person which made for unusual reading but that could be me.

It is book 2 and I think I would advise readers to read book 1 first as I felt I was missing some character background however it did work as stand alone.

The story moves along steadily as we learn about the characters and the area.  The clues are slowly uncovered but with the uncovering comes a total curve ball I certainly wasn’t expecting.

An interesting read.

My Review

This is the first in a new series by Helen Durrant and I was very excited to read it.

The main character is DCI Rachel King. Mother of 2, with her ex husband living next door and an on off relationship with one of the bad guys this is a real roller coaster of a read with a lot of focus on Rachel’s personal life which makes it different in a very good way.

Helen has expertly managed to develop a character via a case. As work becomes entangled with her family and emotions we learn a lot about Rachel, the person at the same time as following a case (or cases) with more twists, turns and false leads than a game of snakes and ladders.

A young man is murdered after being tortured for some time. There is no motive, no clues and no evidence. The team is struggling to find a way forward. The only small lead they have is to Jed, a man with fingers in the dark world of crime but for whom Rachel has very deep feelings.

As we join the team on a rocky journey through evilness and secrets we learn a little about the team Rachel manages. A mixed bag of detectives some loyal some not so it is a very realistic team who work well together despite the differences.

A brilliant book I couldn’t put it down and I am looking forward to many more in this series.

My Review

This is book 1 in the Inspector Drake series although there is a prequel novella, The Devil’s Kitchen that is available free on Amazon.

The story begins with the murder of 2 traffic policemen.  Inspector Ian Drake is called to the scene and so begins a race to unravel the cryptic clues before more people die.

As the book progresses we learn a lot about Ian and his struggle with OCD.  It brings a human perspective to the book as his issues with cleanliness cause him problems with other members of his team.

The story moves along at a decent pace as the reader becomes more intrigued as the case develops and more people die.  What is the link and who is the murderer is something that is a closely guarded secret until we are almost at the end of the book.  I was as flumoxed as the team trying to work out the who and why and then WOW I didn’t see THAT coming.

This is a well written, gripping book that will have the reader turning page after page.  I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Definitely worth the 5 stars.

NEXT VICTIM (DCI Rachel King #1) by Helen Durrant #NewRelease #NextVictim #crimefiction #Detectivebook #Guestpost #DCIRachelKing @joffebooks @hhdurrant

I am very pleased that NEXT VICTIM the first book in a new detective series by the brilliant Helen H Durrant is now available.  Today I would like to share with you Helen’s inspiration for writing this book/series:

My Inspiration for NEXT VICTIM by Helen H Durrant

The inspiration for ‘Next Victim’ came from the stories of the ‘Manchester pusher’. The alleged serial killer who stalks the canal banks of central Manchester looking for likely victims. Four bodies have been pulled from the stretch that runs along Canal Street itself in the last decade. Manchester city has about ten miles of canals, dating back to its industrial heyday.

However, as the tale took form, it changed somewhat. There is a serial killer, but his prey is more focused than the drunken reveller who strays from his friends on the way home from a night out. Besides which, GMP have no proof that there is a ‘pusher’ at all.
I kept the Canal Street location for part of the book. One victim is picked up there, and for the second it is the meeting place. I also used the Rochdale canal as a dumping ground.
Canal Street in Manchester is the hub of the Gay Village. A colourful street of bars and eateries that runs alongside the Rochdale Canal. It is a magnet for the gay community and others looking for a night out, particularly in the summer months.
DCI Rachel King is a feisty redhead, divorcee who has worked hard to fulfil her ambition to be a detective. But it hasn’t been easy. She has two teenage daughters, one who has type one diabetes and needs careful monitoring.    The other is at a local university. Both are headstrong girls and Rachel gets her fair share of grief. She copes because her ex-husband, Alan, lives next door and helps with the girls. He lives in hope of a reconciliation, Rachel does not.
The big love in Rachel’s life is a man she met many years ago while at university. But he is a man denied to her because of who he is and things he’s done. Her past relationship with him is her closest secret.
I very often look to the news for inspiration for my books and am looking at another local story for the second Rachel King tale. The location, Manchester city, is a very different environment from the other books I’ve written and gives a deal more scope.
