Available from: Amazon UK  Amazon US  Amazon Australia  Amazon Canada

Looking for a brilliant best-selling crime mystery with great detectives?

Detective Calladine and Bayliss face a vicious serial killer in a mystery with a shocking ending.

A woman’s body is found in a disused church, a homemade stuffed toy by her side. The victim had been dumped there months ago. The crime has the hallmarks of twenty-year-old case whose alleged perpetrator is in prison.

Detective Ruth Bayliss must work out whether a serial killer has returned, or whether a new killer is just taunting the police.

Her partner DI Tom Calladine faces the fight of his life to clear his name of corruption accusations. And then things go from bad to worse for Calladine . . .

With the team under massive pressure and drugs flooding the streets, another gruesomely presented body is found.

In an ending with a huge twist, the detectives must unpick decades’ old lies before anyone else dies.

THE DETECTIVES
Tom Calladine is a detective inspector who is devoted to his job. His personal life, however, is not so successful. Having been married and divorced before the age of twenty-one has set a pattern that he finds difficult to escape.

Ruth Bayliss is in her mid-thirties, plain-speaking but loyal. She is balancing her professional life with looking after a small child.

THE SETTING
The fictional village of Leesdon on the outskirts of an industrial northern English city. There is little work and a lot of crime. The bane of Calladine’s life is the Hobfield housing estate, breeding ground to all that is wrong with the area that he calls home.

My Review

Helen is one of my favourite authors and I love all 3 of her series’ so was very excited to read this new addition to the Calladine & Bayliss series.  What can I say?  FANTASTIC I  was gripped from the very first page, fast paced, plenty going on and adrenaline pumping suspense.  What more could I ask it ticked every single box.

The story starts with the abduction of a child that reveals the corpse of a murdered woman this victim has been tortured in a horrific way and affects the team badly.  Close on the heels of this Calladine goes missing and the discovery of a dangerous batch of drugs that are flooding the area Ruth and the remainder of the team are chasing their tails trying to keep up with everything.

We learn more about Ruth in this book as she struggles with a difficult decision that could affect everyone.  The rest of the team’s character’s continue to grow and develop into well rounded, realistic but complex characters.

There are many twists and turns as the team juggle the two cases and several mind blowing shockers ensure that the reader keeps turning the pages all the way to the jaw dropping conclusion.

Brilliant read well worth the 5 stars.

Helen H Durrant

Author Bio

Helen sets her books in the area she has lived in for many years. The towns and villages that sit in the shelter of the Pennine hills. This is an area between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills. It offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein.

Helen always planned to write crime novels. But until she retired from full-time work in a local further education college, it had to go on the back burner. Once she did retire – there was no excuse. She now writes full-time. Retirement proper will have to wait!

Currently there are nine books in the ‘Calladine & Bayliss’ series available – Dead Wrong, Dead Silent, Dead List, Dead Lost, Dead & Buried, Dead Nasty, Dead Jealous, Dead Bad, and the latest – Dead Guilty. There is also a box set of the first three books.

Also available are four books in the ‘DI Greco’ series – Dark Murder, Dark Houses, Dark Trade, and the latest – Dark Angel.

There are two books in the DI Matt Brindle series – His Third Victim and The Other Victim.

The DCI Rachel King series has two books – Next Victim and Two Victims

SEVERED (Detective Jason Smith #10)

Available from Amazon for 99p/99c
Read more on Goodreads

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

A student, who hasn’t been seen for a while is found dead in her room.  Her throat has been cut but it turns out that is not the cause of death!  The post-mortem reveals that she had been drained of all her blood.

The killer has left behind no evidence and there are no clues.  Is there a vampire loose in York?  When another body is found Smith and the team are struggling to find a link or a motive.  Will this be the case that defeats the brilliant DS Smith? How much more heartache can Jason Smith bear? Severed will take him to hell and back.

My Review

I am loving all the books Stewart Giles is writing this year so I was thrilled to be reading this one.  Book 10 and I have read them all but I did start with book 8 and then went back to read his back list so I can confirm they do work perfectly as stand alone.

A student’s housemates report a noxious smell coming from her room and as the team investigate they find her with her throat cut.  How could nobody miss her for 2 weeks?  The mystery deepens when a post mortem reveals she has been drained of blood.  Is there a vampire on the loose in York.  There are no clues and Smith is unsure where to look.

This is a very intriguing story and as I expect from Stewart a very unusual one.  It is fast paced and the reader gets drawn in to the story in the early pages and then is hooked into a fast paced journey full of dead ends and shocking curve balls all the way to the totally unexpected ending.

Smith is pulled apart by this case at a time when he is still reeling from events in a previous case.  Will this be one case too far and push Smith over the edge?  It certainly puts his emotions under extreme duress but whether he survives physically and mentally – well you will have to read the book to find out.

Another brilliant addition to the series.  10 books in you would imagine the characters are fully developed but there is still much to learn and I am hoping that this series will continue giving for many more books to come.

5 golden stars from me

Stewart Giles Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.

In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.

Miranda is something totally different. A stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.

Severed, book 10 in the DS Jason Smith series is now available. I am currently writing Mistress, the sequel to Miranda.

7 of 10 Dead Nasty -CALLADINE and BAYLISS series by Helen H Durrant #bookreview #detective #crimefiction @hhdurrant @joffebooks

Dead Nasty (Calladine & Bayliss, #6)

Dead Nasty (book 6)

Available from AMAZON

A GIRL’S BODY IS FOUND IN A DUSTBIN. DEAD MEAT IS WRITTEN ON A NOTE FOUND WITH HER.

The girl was part of a group of bullies from the local school. But DI Calladine recognises the MO of Craig Donnelly, a killer he thought he’d put away forever. And coincidentally Donnelly has just been released from prison. But when Detective Calladine charges in, he finds out that Donnelly has a watertight alibi and is under the protection of the local vicar, who thinks Donnelly is a changed man.

When another girl goes missing from the same group of friends, Calladine must look elsewhere for the killer and comes across a sinister online predator who was in touch with all the girls.

DS Ruth Bayliss is back from maternity leave, but even her skills and common sense can’t crack the case. In a race against time, they must stop the killer, someone who may even be close to home, before he continues his vicious killing spree.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the stunning and surprising conclusion

My Review

This is book 6 in the Calladine and Bayliss series. The first book I read in this series was book 7 some time ago and I have found the time to go back to the beginning and catch up so I can confirm they work perfectly as stand alone although I would recommend starting at the beginning if possible.

The body of a teenager is found and the method of murder takes Calladine back to a case from his past. The murder of Annabelle affected Calladine all those years ago and although the killer was caught and imprisoned he always maintained he was innocent. However, he has been released on parole and now history is repeating itself. Was the wrong man imprisoned? Calladine thinks not but Ruth Bayliss uncovers questions from the earlier case that had no answers forcing Calladine to question is gut instinct.

This case brings both Calladine and Bayliss’ personal lives into their professional ones as they both try to uncover the clues to identify the killer.

I love the characters in this book they develop a little more with each addition to the series as we learn more about the history that has shaped the individual.

This is a fast paced, intriguing story that kept the pages turning on a roller coaster ride of adrenaline pumping suspense all the way to the totally shocking ending.

WOW 5 stars from me – absolutely brilliant

The Forgotten Child by D. E. White #bookreview #crimefiction

Happy publication day to Daisy White. Today THE FORGOTTEN CHILD is released and you all have the opportunity to read a brilliant gripping page-turner. Read on to find out more about the book and read my thoughts.

Eleven years ago, Holly’s brother disappeared and his girlfriend was killed.

Available from AMAZON

Holly has tried her best to forget the traumatic events of her past, turning her back on her crime boss father and making a new life for herself and her son away from the notorious Seaview Estate. But when she’s involved in a car accident and regains consciousness to find a strange child on the backseat, she’s drawn back into everything she’s been trying to escape from.

Who is the child and where did he come from?

Already struggling to deal with her volatile ex-husband, Holly now finds herself haunted by long-buried secrets too. She has spent years trying to get away from the estate, but someone will stop at nothing to get her to return.

As events that began eleven years ago come to a head, Holly is forced once again to fight for her life… and her son’s.

My Review

Wow this book really starts with an adrenaline pumping introduction. As Holly is driving in the night she is being bombarded with hateful texts and is being tailgated by a van on a dark lonely road.  The inevitable crash knocks her out for a while and when she wakes up there is a strange child in the car with her son.  Where did this child come from?  How and why is he unconscious in her car?

The mysteries continue to add up as secrets from the past come back to haunt not only Holly but her friends and family.

The characters develop well over the course of the book and I loved getting to know Holly and the other characters.  I like how the story and the histories of each character meshed perfectly with the story making this a riveting read that I couldn’t put down.

The story itself is intriguing it had me hooked from the beginning and there are numerous twists and turns throughout to keep the reader’s interest.  I thought I had worked it out several times but then the story twisted again and I had to rethink.

A brilliant book with a lot going on all the way through I loved it.  5 stars from me.

BLOG TOUR – Ladybird (DS Smith #2) by Stewart Giles #detectivebook #policeprocedural #crimefiction #DSSmith @stewartgiles

Today it is my stop on the Blog Tour for LADYBIRD by Stewart Giles. This is book 3 in the very gripping DS Smith series. I absolutely love this series and very pleased to be helping with the relaunch of the digitally remastered version.

Ladybird (DS Jason Smith #3) by Stewart Giles

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

The Goul is arrested for Murder and Jason Smith is on sick leave.

Detective Sergeant Jason Smith is days away from the end of his sick leave after a case that almost cost him his life when he gets a call from an old friend. His friend has been arrested for the murder of a student. He wants Smith to investigate the murder and prove his innocence. Smith is persuaded return to work. The student was killed with a bread knife. Ladybirds were scattered on his dead body.

When another man is found dead with ladybirds on his body, Smith enlists the help of an insect doctor, the enigmatic DR Karen Wood, to try and understand the significance of the ladybirds. As Smith gets drawn closer to this mysterious woman and more and more men wind up dead with ladybirds on their bodies Smith quickly realises that Dr Wood is not who she seems to be.

Smith and his team unearth a terrible secret from twenty years earlier; somebody wants justice and, as more and more men die, Smith realises he is running out of time to find out who.
This is a fast-paced page-turner with twists and turns all the way to an ending you wont see coming.

If you like Police Procedurals, then this is a series you won’t want to miss.

THE SETTING
York is a historic walled city in North Yorkshire, England.
At the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss, York is the traditional county town of the historic county of Yorkshire. York Minster and a variety of cultural and sporting activities make it a popular tourist destination.

THE DETECTIVES
DS Jason Smith is an Australian who was sent to York to live with his Grandmother when his sister disappeared from a beach. He has suffered many losses in his short life and is now a dedicated detective. He is a bit of a loose cannon he has his own way of doing things and that doesn’t always mean following orders and procedures.
DS Thompson is of the same rank as Jason, but he doesn’t have the same support or success. He and Jason have a love/hate relationship which brings a bit of humour to the series. Thompson is old school and thinks his age should give him respect and privileges, but life doesn’t work that way for him.
DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond. She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

What readers are saying about Ladybird:
‘This book was gripping from the first page to the last. The characters are all well written, believable and sympathetic.’ – Mrs Christine H Clark

‘Superb book left you guessing to the end.Sends you up so many alleys and you still can’t see the outcome.’ – Mike

‘A well paced story that will have you hooked very quickly and then drag you along for the ride in such a way as to not want to stop reading..’ – Hisboss

‘Another gripping book by this Author well written lots going on could not put this book down.’ – Kindle Customer

‘What a good book had you wandering all the time would read his books again I haven’t read his before.’ – Dora Gibbons

My Review

Ladybird is book 2 in the DS Smith series but they do work brilliantly as stand alone.

The story starts with The Goul, a pathologist, being accused of murder.  He begs Smith for help at a time when Jason is struggling through his grief at the death of his girlfriend, guilt and many other issues.  Will he put aside the bottle to help his old friend or walk away from everything?

I think everyone who has read the previous books will know the answer to that one.  Before Smith has chance to prove The Goul innocent another body is found.  Who is killing young men?

Now I have read books that are full of twists, turns and shockers. Lots of them.  But I can hold my hand up and say that I have never read anything like this one.  The unsub is a totally unique character and definitely throws into the abyss everything I thought I knew about serial killers.  There is plenty of evidence but nothing to match it to.  The ladybirds is an awesome idea and how Stewart thought that one up I really don’t know.

As the bodies stack up the team are running out of ideas and the red herrings and twists and turns are enough to make you dizzy.

The only possibility for the murderer doesn’t quite fit and that adds to the intrigue and suspense.

A totally gripping page-turner with complex characters that build well in depth throughout the story.  A brilliant read and well worth 5 stars.

I am now downloading Occam’s Razor.

When one of the dates is a time before Smith was even born, he realises he must look deep into the past to find a way to stop the worst spate of murders in York’s long history.
As the countdown begins can Jason catch York’s first serial killer before it’s too late?

My Review

This is book 2 in a very addictive series I find myself reaching for the next book as soon as I have finished the previous one.

The story begins with a suicide that turns out to be murder.  Then Smith’s life is changed forever.  People are dying and the dates are significant dates from the past.  Someone has Smith in their sights but why?  What happened all those years ago and why is Smith being held accountable?

This is an adrenaline pumping read from the very first page.  The suspense and pace build gradually as we progress into the book and the further I got the more invested I was in the story and the characters.

Lets talk about the characters: Jason is the lead character I have followed his journey from the beginning in Phobia and then Smith but if you haven’t read those it is perfectly okay as Stewart makes a brilliant job of building the history into the book.  He is flawed he has had a difficult time with many heart-breaking losses and now this! All this comes accross in the book excellently.  He is on a mission to put away the bad guys whatever it takes.  He is a bit of a loose cannon and a straight talker and that brings humour to the book.

Witton is his favoured partner.  She has a lot of feelings for Smith but he isn’t returning them, yet.  She has Smith’s back and that makes her vulnerable at times.  I think they are a relationship waiting to happen but we will see.  They look out for each other and that becomes very important in this story.

The main theme of the story is Smith’s past and part of that is Lucy, an old flame from his teenage years.  As the looking back into his past takes Smith out of his comfort zone the murderer is ranking up and the bodies are stacking up.  The clock is ticking.

Suspense, twists, turns and curve balls.  This book has it all.  An adrenaline pumping page turner that I found very difficult to put down.  Definitely 5 golden stars from me.  Now I am off to read Ladybird.

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live. After Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head I came up with the idea for a detective series. The Beekeeper hit the shelves and hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well. The third in the series, The Backpacker I have self-published and is now available.

MATT BRINDLE
Book 1: HIS THIRD VICTIM

My Review

I read and thoroughly enjoyed HIS THIRD VICTIM so I have been hoping and praying there would be more books featuring Matt Brindle so I was very eager to read this one.

Matt has just returned to Police work after a long time recovering from an accident in which he injured his leg and his partner was killed.  He is still pretty traumatised but hopefully over the worst.

The story begins with an Estate Agent being found dead on the kitchen floor by prospective purchasers.  Who would want to kill an unassuming man who is hurting no-one?  That is the first problem facing Matt and his team and more get added to the pile as we turn page after page.

There are family problems involving his mother and the opening of Brindle Hall to the public.  A new team member, Kate, with her problems and attitude.  When links start reaching back to events Matt is trying to forget he has to delve deep to keep on top of the panic.

The family relationships and problems bring a new perspective to the story to make it even more gripping.

This is a very complex and intertangled story with different crimes to be investigated and different teams involved it kept me totally engrossed in the book and turning page after page until I reached the stunning conclusion.

Absolutely awesome read I highly recommend this to anyone who likes Crime Fiction of any sort.

Definitely 5 golden stars from me!  I am now waiting for the next book from Helen Durrant who is, without a doubt, one of my favourite authors and I have loved every one of her books.  Keep ’em coming Helen.

5 Golden stars

I’m one of the ‘baby boomer’ generation. I was born in Edinburgh to an English father and Scottish mother. My father was from the North West of England and this was where the family settled.
I know the area well, both the good and the bad, and so I set my books here. Sitting between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills, it offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein. I always planned to write crime novels — to create the characters in my books. Since my retirement from a busy teaching job in FE, this is what I’ve done — almost to exclusion of anything else!
I have a grown-up family and five grandchildren. They see me as something of an eccentric — always on my laptop writing away. Writing is something of a second career and, despite having a bus pass, keeps me busy, young and tuned in the world as it currently is.

DOUBLE-CROSS, REVENGE, AND MURDER. IT’S JUST ANOTHER HALLOWEEN IN LA.
UNTIL DETECTIVE TOM STONE TAKES ACTION.

Multiple murders with one grisly connection have Detectives Tom Stone and Jake Sharpe pursuing every lead. Their main suspect, Anthony Angelino, fresh out of prison, dreams of building a new empire, but his past quickly catches up to him. Once again he is on the run from the police and the drug cartel that tried to ruin him.
The head of the cartel, Frank DeVito, tails Stone hoping the Detective’s investigation will flush out Angelino. Then he can exact his revenge and claim what he says Angelino has stolen – a large shipment of pure cocaine.
Angelino’s girlfriend, Sara, pleads for him to escape the deadly lifestyle. As the body count rises, Stone confronts the challenges in his relationship with Alisha Davidson, Angelino’s defense attorney.
Halloween dramatically twists into Day of the Dead celebrations as cocaine’s promised riches weave a tale of bloody betrayal, shattered friendships and loves both lost – and won.

My Review

This is book 3 of the series but the first I have read so I can confirm it works well as stand-alone.  However, I do plan to go back and read the first 2 books as I would like to learn more about Tom and Jake.

The story starts with the body of a man.  He has been shot and his left pinky is missing.  This has similarities to an unsolved case from a few years ago and sets off alarm bells in Tom’s mind.

We then learn about Angelino (Angel) who is anything but.  He is currently in prison so he can’t be responsible for the murder or can he?  Tom’s girlfriend is a defence lawyer and receives evidence of Angel’s innocence in dealing cocaine so we have the complication of Tom wanting Angel inside and Aisha convinced of his innocence and that is only part of the tangled web.

Drugs, violence, women all play a part and with Halloween fast approaching things are starting to get messy.

This is a fast paced page turner with suspense that starts at the beginning and keeps building right to the end.  Action all the way through it is a great read.

Tom is the main character and is a dedicated detective determined to get the bad guys and he works well with Jake.  He is a friendly man and has a good relationship with his ex wife.

Angel is the opposite but there is something about him that is likeable even though he is someone that definitely shouldn’t be liked.

So what we have here is a fast paced, action packed thriller with well defined complex characters.  It is well written and a very gripping read.  Highly recommended for readers of Crime Fiction.

5 stars from me.
