My Review

This is book 2 in the Miranda Trilogy so if you haven’t read book 1 I recommend you do so because it helps to understand Miranda and her personality.

Book 1 ended with the death of Patricia and that is where this book begins.

Lets start with the characters.

Miranda, she found out by accident that she likes to watch people die, in particular men.  She also has an inbuilt repulsion of men ‘handling’ her in any way and her reaction to any contact is uncontrollable rage.  There is something about the character that you have to like.  Any woman who has suffered any kind of abuse is likely to have a small part of them high fiving Miranda for having the guts to do what they couldn’t.  Miranda is unique, different and an absolute genius of a character so kudos to the author for her creation.

DS Swales was Patricia’s colleague and he was also present when Miranda ‘confessed’.  Both he and Patricia put Miranda down to a weirdo and because of this he feels guilty that Patricia lost her life because they didn’t take the confession seriously.  He is on a mission to make amends for this mistake and that mission will take him to the other side of the world where he will follow Miranda but always one step behind.  He is a very caring man and I love how his personality has flourished in this book.

Lisa.  She is a news blogger and also the sister of a David who was sent to prison for a murder that Miranda committed.  Lisa teams up with Henry Swales using her blogging network to track Miranda.  Lisa is a selfless person who will stop at nothing to prove David’s innocence.  Tragedy wont stop her mission to see Miranda pay for her crime and David exonerated.

The story – well what can I say it is a roller coaster of adrenaline pumping suspense that will keep you turning page after page.  There are many twists and turns, numerous shocks and a lot of false leads.  Will Henry and Lisa catch her?  With Interpol and US Police each managing their own investigation the race is on to catch Miranda.  However, Miranda is nothing if not resourceful and she has avoided capture for some time.  Will time run out or will she continue to kill?

I do love how the author has written in about bloggers.  They get a lot of bad press and it is brilliant to see them take an important and beneficial part in this story.

This is a work of fiction and the author has taken full advantage of that to write a totally gripping story with an absolutely breath-taking ending that makes for a 5star read.  I can’t wait for the final instalment.

Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.

In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.

Miranda is something totally different. A stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.

Book 4: THE LIAR

My Review

This is book 4 in the Mike Croft series but they do work well as stand alone.

I have read all the books in this series so I feel I have got to know Mike quite well.  He comes accross as being a little insecure he lost his 10 year old son and his marriage fell apart.  He is now happily married to Maria but they were never blessed with children.  In this story Mike is plagued by dreams that included his son.  What do they mean?  Do they have a bearing on the current case?  These are questions he is looking for the answer to.

His partner of choice is Jude she has a knack of knowing the right way to approach people which Mike is lacking so they make a very effective team.

John, a retired detective takes a major part in this book as his past comes back to haunt him.

The story is intriguing it is not the fast paced adrenaline pumping type of thriller but a solid gripping detective story full of twists and turns.  There are many secrets to uncover and the ending is quite a shock.

There were many stories all interlinked to make up the main story with betrayal, blackmail, fraud and the issues that affected unmarried mothers way back in time that all feed in to the main story.  I kept turning page after page wanting to know what other secrets were to be revealed before Mike and his team were able to join the dots.

I didn’t really work out what the big black dog brought to the story but it didn’t affect my enjoyment so very happy to award the full 5 stars.

Why do I write?

Like most writers, it’s a kind of compulsion. The stories are there and I have to try and grab hold of them and pin them onto the page. Most of the time, I enjoy the process; sometimes, I’d rather be doing just about anything else, up to and including the ironing – and I hate ironing.

I started writing when my youngest child went to school. I was incredibly lucky and my first novel, The Greenway, was picked up by Macmillan in 1994 and published in 1995.

I currently write two series; Naomi Blake and Rina Martin. Rina was a character I’d had in mind for years before committing her to paper. An elderly, ex thespian who had played the part of a popular TV detective, she had retired to the seaside and bought a boarding house for other ex performers. Rina’s feisty, no nonsense character is, I suppose, based on the rather powerful and opinionated ladies I grew up surrounded by – mother, teachers in the all girls school I attended, aunts and pseudo aunts, all of whom had opinions about everything and made sure these were unstintingly shared.

Naomi Blake, on the other hand, was the brainchild of my late agent, Bob Tanner at International Scripts. ‘You should write a blind detective,’ he said ‘ and she needs a big, black guidedog, called Napoleon’.

I thought it was a daft idea, and told him so. I just couldn’t see how to do it. But, like a lot of seemingly daft ideas, this one wormed its was into my brain and I realised he was right. It could work and so, the Naomi Blake series came into being.

I have always written in other genres too, short stories in the SF, Fantasy and Gothic Horror genre, and am working on longer projects when time allows. I also teach Creative Writing and have had the great priviligde of being a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at three different universities.

Murderous Secret. And yes there certainly are! I think that the title for this book couldn’t be more apt and I love the cover! It has an eerie look about it and although I read the ebook, this cover is typical of one which would catch my eye and make me want to pick it up and read it.
Northfields Farm, not far from Summerthorpe village, is holding a 1940’s themed dance, organised by a local charity to help raise some money for a local hospice. What could possibly go wrong?!
From the outset, this well thought out storyline had me gripped and we don’t have to wait long for any action.
DS Ava Merry and DC PollyJane aka PJ, were (fortunately) supporting the charity and hoping for an enjoyable evening when their evening was scuppered following the discovery of a body …then the victims mount up …
I felt excited as I read – the amount of suspects were also building up – but what were the motives for the killings and were they connected? Was it the work of the same killer or were there more?and why were there so many secrets? I honestly had no idea! The owners of Northfields Farm, Aubrey and Bea Stratford, along with their grown up children: Monty and Blue, had moved from Brighton to set up a new life for themselves on the farm, from which they ran a ‘glampsite’ and made their own beer. I loved Aubrey, he was a humorous character and although a little eccentric he seemed harmless enough and enjoyed nothing more than 1940’s memorabilia and ‘tinkering’ in one of his garages on one of his many projects with his old pal Charles who lived close by and also shared Aubrey’s passion of WW2 memorabilia. I think that the author has created the characters to be very believable but are they who they say they are? I love, love, loved Soren Hunter, and wanted to find out more of his background. I was also looking forward to seeing who would cop it next as I was hoping to find some clue, but no, it really is so cleverly written. I liked that we don’t hear the killer/s point of view and that had me guessing even harder! Although I felt excited and couldn’t wait for all the pieces to slot into place and solve the ‘puzzle’ so to speak, I also felt a sadness as I knew that some of the characters hadn’t had it easy in their lives and two characters inparticular, oh how I wish that they’d cop it 😂 This is the 6th book in the Merry/Neal series – my first and definitely not my last – but I would recommend that they be read in order. A very enjoyable read that I highly recommend! Thank you.
