My Review

A new series from one of my favourite authors is always exciting.

Siv Drummond – her husband and soul mate has died in an accident leaving her bereft and broken.  She moves to Berminster to try to move on with her life.  A new home, a new area, new colleagues, boss and everything that goes with it is a big challenge for someone who is lost but Siv is basically strong and is determined to find her way.

She is paired with Ali an overweight diabetic but one with a big heart and compassionate nature he is just what Siv needs.  Someone she can instinctively trust and rely on even if they need to get to know each other.

The story begins with a polish man finding the body of a young woman while doing a little early morning fishing.  The discovery costs him his life and there we have it, Siv Drummond thrown in the deep end with 2 dead bodies no motive and no clues.  The only clue is a photo left on the woman’s body the photo is a young child but nobody knows who she is.

This is a complex story with many false leads and unexpected twists as the team slowly unravel the clues and lies.  It appears everyone is hiding something but is that something relevant to the case?

A very intriguing story with characters who develop well.  I am looking forward to reading more in this new series.

MEET THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Siv Drummond is widowed following a tragic accident involving her husband. With everything in London reminding her of the past, she moves from a high-profile squad with the Met to a new job as DI in her old home town — sleepy, seaside Berminster. She’s still grieving and lonely, but she’s a fighter and she’s smart, which earns her the respect of her colleagues DS Ali Carlin and DC Patrick Hill, and the grudging approval of her DCI, who wants his protégé to get her job.

Crimson Siege

Blood Riders book 1

by Jay Raven

Available from AMAZON

In the godless badlands of Transylvania the fragile truce between mankind and monsters is about to explode…

When bounty hunters target one of 19th century Europe’s most feared vampire clans, the last place any lawman wants to be is caught in the middle…

But for Anton Yoska, Lord Marshal of the Imperial lands south of the Carpathian Mountains, fate has trapped him in a supernatural stand-off that can end only in a bloodbath.

A gang of mercenaries led by Anton’s former army comrade Milosh Drubrick have captured vampire aristocrat Stefan Modjeski, wanted for a string of frenzied murders, and have come to Anton to claim the reward. And as Stefan’s predatory undead kin lay siege to the jailhouse, Anton is faced with an agonising choice – hand over his prisoner and abandon the bounty hunters to their unspeakable fate, or stand and fight.

The jailhouse defenders are outnumbered and out of options. It’s a battle that can’t be won, certain slaughter for them all, and Anton can’t trust his scheming allies. But Lord Marshal Yoska isn’t about to surrender.

For he’s an experienced vampire hunter, a dangerous man when cornered, and a single minded warrior who knows there are worse things to fear than death…

My Review

I was very interested in how Jay would approach the vampires as he himself admits that Drakula had been done to death.  I was very impressed I was hooked very early on as the reader is thrown straight in to the horrific scenes of this ‘new’ vampire and from there the adrenaline keeps pumping.

There is a little humour interwoven in the story (at least I think so) and this softens what would otherwise be a little too ‘horrific’ for some.

There are several characters introduced at the start and more join in as the story progresses.  They develop steadily through the story it all makes for a gripping fast moving read.  I am eager to learn more about the history behind this book but I am assured all will become clear in the next book.

I am very impressed with this modern day view of the undead Jay has added new elements and the whole thing works perfectly.

Excellent read, well worth the 5 stars and I will eagerly await the next book.
