The Oxford Mystery (Jenny Starling #5) by Faith Martin

Available from Amazon

Discover a new series of whodunits by million-selling author Faith Martin. These charming mysteries will have you scratching your head to work out who the murderer is.

Meet Jenny Starling: travelling cook and reluctant amateur detective.

Please note this book was first published as “DEADLY STUFF” under Faith Martin’s pen name JOYCE CATO.

Jenny Starling has a summer job cooking at a prestigious Oxford college. But she’s not expecting murder on the menu.

Then womanisingtaxidermy society president, Maurice Raines, is found with a knife in his neck in the dining hall.

Everyone is in classes at the time of his death. So, frustratingly it seems they all have an alibi.

However there are many suspects, including Maurice’s wife and his lover.
The college and police need Jenny’s help to solve this perplexing case. But can Jenny keep her concentration with a budding romance on the cards?

This is the fifth in a series of enjoyable murder mysteries with a great cast of characters and baffling crimes which will keep you in suspense to the final page.

Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey, and J.R. Ellis.

In her late twenties, Jenny Starling is an impressive woman. Physically, she stands at 6ft 1inch, and has shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes. Curvaceous and sexy, she’s a modern single woman, living the lifestyle that suits her – that of a travelling cook. Her famous (and now very rich) father, is a ‘celebrity’ cook, divorced from Jenny’s mother. Jenny drives a disreputable cherry-red van, and is happy travelling the country catering events and cooking great food. She is on a one-woman crusade to bring back ‘real’ food. And definitely doesn’t like having to divert her attention from achieving the perfect Dundee cake or creating a new sauce recipe by having to solve a murder. She finds crime very distracting, especially when there is chocolate to temper or pike to poach. Nevertheless, she is very good at reading people, and with a quick and agile brain, becomes very good at unmasking killers. And her always-undaunted sense of humour goes a long way in keeping her sane when all around her people are dropping like flies.

FAITH MARTIN is the best-selling author of the DETECTIVE HILLARY GREENE mysteries, which have sold over 1 million copies globally in just over a year.

Black Books Blog

As with the previous books this is a very cosy mystery, with no blood or gore in it and enough twists to keep you entertained and guessing throughout.  Read more here

Musings of a tired mummy

The book is easy to read, feels comfortably and traditionally English, full of red herrings and interesting characters. The Oxford Mystery kept me guessing until the end and I look forward to seeing where Jenny ends up next… Read more here

Maybe don’t read these if you are hungry- they may give you an
appetite! I think my only criticism (and its tiny) is that we keep being reminded of Jenny’s six foot, junoesque build which is a tad repetitive. That said she is not a woman to mess with and has a nose and ears for what is around her. Who wouldn’t love her as a neighbour or friend.?Then again…..she is always around when there is a murder so perhaps not!
A wonderful read to curl up with and enjoy. Read more here

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

This is the fifth in the Jenny Starling series and, I have to admit, my favourite so far. This time, Jenny is employed by an Oxford college (St Bede’s) to cook during the summer holidays for the various meetings and conferences being held there.  Read more here

Jessica Rachow

I read this novel as a standalone and it worked well, however, now I feel like I’m missing out on a wonderful series and must go back to read the rest! I loved the mystery, it kept me guessing until the reveal and that is so important in a story like this.  Read more here

Robin Loves Reading

In this series to-date, Jenny’s focus has never been directed towards romance. It was a delight to see something blooming in that direction. I am not sure what is next for this series, but I certainly look forward to seeing more of Jenny in the future.   Read more here

Linda Strong Book Reviews

Once again, this is a well written mystery with memorable characters. Although this is 4th in the series, it is easily read as a stand alone.  Read more here

BLOG TOUR – You Can’t Hide (Ray Paterson #4) by Steve Parker @mrparkerspen @joffebooks #crimefiction #netgalley #YouCantHide

Today is my stop on the Blog Tour for YOU CANT HIDE by Steve Parker.  This is book 4 in the brilliant Ray Paterson series and today I am sharing with you my review of this adrenaline pumping book.

You Can’t Hide (Ray Paterson #4)

Available from AMAZON

Discover a crime thriller full of shocking twists by one of the most exciting new authors you’ll read this year.

Albert Tanner, vicious psychopath and burner of men, is in the USA with unfinished business.

Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson and Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks must find him first.

Their task is straightforward: hunt Tanner down and bring him home. But a few explosions, an assassin and a dead child changes everything.

Dragged into a sordid world of high class sex parties they discover an Albert Tanner they never knew existed.

Then a child is snatched from her own bed and Tanner wants to do a deal. And the price is far too high.

Paterson and Clocks realise they have no choice but to hunt Tanner down their own way.

This is the fourth in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth.

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Martina Cole.

What readers are saying about STEVE PARKER’S BOOKS

“A must read for all crime thriller fans.” Viv

“A fast-moving action-packed thriller which will keep you enthralled from page one.”

“Another gripping, fast-paced and twisted caper for the most unorthodox police duo in UK fiction.” Donna

“Loved the book, Clocks makes me laugh out loud.” Aileen

Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson is a young and (thanks to family money) wealthy womaniser, separated from his model wife and tipped to be the youngest ever commissioner of police. He knows he’s weak when it comes to practical policing and struggles to find a place among his peers, desperate to be a good policeman and not just a ‘climber’.

Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks is a foul-mouthed, working-class officer. He grew up surrounded by rogues and villains to become a first-class thief taker with the Met police. However, his childish attitude has short-circuited his career and he spends his days antagonising as many people as he can.

Steve Parker is a retired police officer who served for 20 years in numerous high-profiles squads.

My Review

Paterson and Clocks are back so settle down and be ready for an adrenaline pumping read.

This is book 4 and although the books work as stand-alone you will enjoy it more if you read them in sequence. Unique characters and engaging story lines with twists and turns all the way through make for an intense page turner that I highly recommend for readers who like dark thrillers.

Paterson is a wealthy upper class Detective Superintendent who rose through the ranks via a fast track system. Clocks in contrast is a working class Londoner who has made detective by climbing the ranks as a result of hard work. In book one the two clashed each resenting the other Clocks thought Paterson a ‘posh git’ and Paterson thought Clocks uncouth and tactless. They have developed their relationship from resenting each other to a very effective working partnership each having the other’s back 100%.

The story begins as they board a plane to New York chasing Albert Tanner following a turf war in book 3. Clocks had me laughing before he had got off the plane. They arrive at JFK airport and the action starts with a chase followed by explosions. It is game on and everyone is in danger.

Will they catch Tanner or lose their lives? You will have to read the book to find out. What I can tell you is that this is an absolutely gripping read that I couldn’t put down and I doubt you will be able to either.

Author Bio

I was born and raised in South East London (Peckham to be precise – cushty, my son). At the ripe old age of twenty-one, I joined the Metropolitan Police where I served for twenty years before I was pensioned out with a serious back injury. I then went to work as an enforcement officer for a local authority before taking redundancy.

Thankfully, I’ve been blessed with a complete lack of DIY skills so was legitimately able to get away with swanning around the house doing bugger all, all day long. Finding myself with plenty of spare time and a deep desire to never work for anyone again, I gave myself permission to go back to writing (I’d been writing on and off for years).

When I’m not writing, I’m out taking photographs, something I’ve done since I was a nipper and will do until the day I shuffle off this mortal coil.

I live down in the windier part of East Sussex near the sea with my long-suffering wife and my ‘off-her-nut’ cockerpoo. I have two sons of whom I am so proud, I cannot begin to tell you.
