NEXT VICTIM (DCI Rachel King #1) by Helen Durrant #NewRelease #NextVictim #crimefiction #Detectivebook #Guestpost #DCIRachelKing @joffebooks @hhdurrant

I am very pleased that NEXT VICTIM the first book in a new detective series by the brilliant Helen H Durrant is now available.  Today I would like to share with you Helen’s inspiration for writing this book/series:

My Inspiration for NEXT VICTIM by Helen H Durrant

The inspiration for ‘Next Victim’ came from the stories of the ‘Manchester pusher’. The alleged serial killer who stalks the canal banks of central Manchester looking for likely victims. Four bodies have been pulled from the stretch that runs along Canal Street itself in the last decade. Manchester city has about ten miles of canals, dating back to its industrial heyday.

However, as the tale took form, it changed somewhat. There is a serial killer, but his prey is more focused than the drunken reveller who strays from his friends on the way home from a night out. Besides which, GMP have no proof that there is a ‘pusher’ at all.
I kept the Canal Street location for part of the book. One victim is picked up there, and for the second it is the meeting place. I also used the Rochdale canal as a dumping ground.
Canal Street in Manchester is the hub of the Gay Village. A colourful street of bars and eateries that runs alongside the Rochdale Canal. It is a magnet for the gay community and others looking for a night out, particularly in the summer months.
DCI Rachel King is a feisty redhead, divorcee who has worked hard to fulfil her ambition to be a detective. But it hasn’t been easy. She has two teenage daughters, one who has type one diabetes and needs careful monitoring.    The other is at a local university. Both are headstrong girls and Rachel gets her fair share of grief. She copes because her ex-husband, Alan, lives next door and helps with the girls. He lives in hope of a reconciliation, Rachel does not.
The big love in Rachel’s life is a man she met many years ago while at university. But he is a man denied to her because of who he is and things he’s done. Her past relationship with him is her closest secret.
I very often look to the news for inspiration for my books and am looking at another local story for the second Rachel King tale. The location, Manchester city, is a very different environment from the other books I’ve written and gives a deal more scope.

Discover a crime thriller full of shocking twists by one of the most exciting new authors you’ll read this year.
A MAN IS SHOT DEAD IN THE STREET. BUT WHAT THE POLICE FIND NEARBY IS FAR WORSE.
An elderly African man is found dead in the street, shot through the head. The killing has the hallmark of a professional assassin. Dumped in a waste bin next to the dead man is the dismembered torso of a child.
On his first day back at work, disgraced Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson finds himself teamed up again with newly promoted Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks.
They must hunt down a ruthless killer with connections that go far beyond anything they’ve ever come across before.
Within days they know who committed the murders and why, but are left reeling when they are ordered by the government to release the child’s killers.

FINDING THE KILLERS WASN’T THE HARD PART. BRINGING THEM TO JUSTICE IS.

This is the second in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth.

TWO DETECTIVES WHO HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT EACH OTHER MUST WORK TOGETHER.

Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson is a young and (thanks to family money) wealthy womaniser, separated from his model wife and tipped to be the youngest ever commissioner of police. He knows he’s weak when it comes to practical policing and struggles to find a place among his peers, desperate to be a good policeman and not just a ‘climber’.
Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks is a foul-mouthed, working-class officer. He grew up surrounded by rogues and villains to become a first-class thief taker with the Met police. However, his childish attitude has short-circuited his career and he spends his days antagonising as many people as he can.

My Review

Wow! I am not really sure where to start with this one. I love adrenaline pumping thrillers, the more explicit the better and the first book in this series ticked every box so I was very excited to read this one. It is heart rending in parts, shockingly so but unfortunately it is also very realistic and I truly believe this does happen even in today’s ‘modern society’ so on with the book……

What we have here is a complex story with many strands and the reader is taken on a rocky road trip to watch all the strands become entangled with Paterson and Clocks working their way through the spaghetti to find out what is actually going on.

Corruption, witchcraft, cover ups and money laundering are just a few we can add politics and culture into the mix and sprinkle a vigilante soldier on top and you can be assured you have one hell of a wonderful read.

Then on top of a totally shocking twisty turny, breathtaking story we have the detectives: Paterson and Clocks, what a duo. In book one there was a lack of common ground between the two, in this book they have got over that and are now united in their quest to get the bad guys and the humour interlaced brings a brilliant dimension to the book.

That is all I am going to say. Go and grab a copy and get reading this is what Crime Fiction should be. An unforgettable read and I loved every page. I just hope book 3 is on the way.

My one regret in this book is that the synopsis contains a massive spoiler and that did affect my enjoyment of the book but still a well earned 5 stars.

Steve Parker author photoAuthor Bio

I was born and raised in South East London (Peckham to be precise – cushty, my son). At the ripe old age of twenty-one, I joined the Metropolitan Police where I served for twenty years before I was pensioned out with a serious back injury. I then went to work as an enforcement officer for a local authority before taking redundancy.

Thankfully, I’ve been blessed with a complete lack of DIY skills so was legitimately able to get away with swanning around the house doing bugger all, all day long. Finding myself with plenty of spare time and a deep desire to never work for anyone again, I gave myself permission to go back to writing (I’d been writing on and off for years).

When I’m not writing, I’m out taking photographs, something I’ve done since I was a nipper and will do until the day I shuffle off this mortal coil.

I live down in the windier part of East Sussex near the sea with my long-suffering wife and my ‘off-her-nut’ cockerpoo. I have two sons of whom I am so proud, I cannot begin to tell you.

My Review

This is book 6 in the brilliant DI Mariner series by Chris Collett

Tom Mariner is suffering the loss of the woman he loved and sets off walking in Wales to deal with his grief.  However, despite being out in the wilderness that is Wales with no signal and even fewer people he is still unable to escape Police work as he becomes involved in the discovery of a body.

This is a very intriguing book with many different things going on in different places all at the same time which involves Knox travelling down to Wales to help Mariner and also helping in several other things that are going on.

It was interesting to read about the Welsh countryside and the remote byres and hostels and this offsets perfectly with the detective work going on in the background.

Intrigue and suspense intermingled with twists and turns and relationships all makes up a stunning story that keeps the reader guessing right to the end

THE SETTING
Birmingham is a city of stark contrasts with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Playing a key role in the industrial revolution, it helped shape the nation’s manufacturing industry

But with its many green spaces, Birmingham also borders on the beautiful countryside of Worcestershire and Warwickshire, is just a few miles from Stratford on Avon and a short drive from the wild country of mid-Wales.

Birmingham’s population is large and ethnically diverse, and while urban regeneration has forged a modern and culturally vibrant city, the decaying remnants of the industrial past and 1960s concrete jungle give it a unique and gritty character; the dark underbelly policed by DI Tom Mariner and his team.

THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Tom Mariner is, on the surface, an average dedicated policeman, but his experiences as a younger man have given him an insight into life on the dark side, and a clear sense of right and wrong. Mariner has little interest in material things. He lives in a modest canal-side cottage, enjoys the occasional (real) beer and game of dominoes and drives an old car. He is most at home in the outdoors, with an OS map and a compass, and in times of crisis, will take off and walk for miles in any weather.

RUBY BAKER SERIES
Book 1: BEFORE I LEFT
Book 2: BEFORE I FOUND YOU
Book 3: BEFORE I TRUST YOU

My Review

This is book 3 in the Ruby Baker series.  It is the 1960s so bear that in mine when reading as opinions and safety have changed a lot since then.

This series is definitely growing on me and I am hoping for many more.

The story begins at a horse race.  Everyone is in high spirits and very excited when a girl suddenly runs out in front of the horses.  A tragic accident, suicide or murder?  There are a lot of opinions but nobody really saw anything or did they?

This is a story that moves along at a fairly fast pace and I was gripped all the way through.  There is a lot going on and that brings with it a lot of interest.  We expect competition and gambling in the horse racing world but there is a lot more going on here.

Suicide (or murder) by horse is a unique idea.  The victim was playing the field so maybe jealousy was a motive or maybe not.  The suspense builds all the way through the book and we are nearly at the end before the pieces fit together.

Ruby and her gang of amateur detectives are realistic characters that have grown and developed over the series.  There are also a couple of back stories that could make the reader feel they have missed something but apart from that the book works well as stand alone.

Adrenaline pumping suspense, twists, turns and red herrings this is an intriguing story that will keep you entertained.  5 stars from me.

DETECTIVE NIKKI GALENA’S FRIEND THINKS SHE HAS A DEADLY STALKER, BUT WILL ANYONE BELIEVE HER BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE?

DI Nikki Galena’s close friend Helen Brook is involved in a serious accident where she is trapped in a collapsed cellar. After her hard-won recovery, Helen is still getting flashbacks to a man she says was down there with her and who confessed to a murder. But no trace of this man can be found.

Then Helen tells Nikki that someone is watching her. But is all this in her friend’s imagination and part of her post-traumatic stress?

And why is Stephen Cox back in town? He’s the villain who tore Nikki’s life apart and he seems to have returned to wreak more chaos. Before long the whole town is on the verge of hysteria and her friend’s fear will lead Nikki and Joseph on a very dangerous trail.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the heart-stopping conclusion.

THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on the criminals who she thinks did this to her.

HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

My Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is book 5 in the ‘Fens’ series by Joy Ellis and I was really looking forward to another book starring the awesome character of Nikki Galena. I wasn’t disappointed this is another roller coaster of a thriller that has the adrenaline pumping from the very first page.

A crash brings an unsafe building crashing to the ground. Many are trapped and injured including Helen Brook. She is pulled out of the rubble barely alive with extensive injuries. Luckily she survives but with PTSD. With the compensation she turns her home into a treatment centre offering alternative care.

Everybody loves Helen but someone is watching her. Problem is everyone thinks it is her PTSD that is making her paranoid. But is it?

A nemesis from Nikki and Joseph’s past returns to the area. Stephen Cox is evilness personified and the Police are determined to take him out of circulation as is the Godfather of the Carbrook estate.

The team is overstretched and understaffed in particular Nikki and as they try to juggle themselves to be in more than one place at once the potential for someone to be harmed reaches dangerous levels.

An absolute belter of a read that I couldn’t put down. I love this series each book we find there is more to learn about the characters as they gain depth and I get more invested in the series.

Brilliant read.

A MYSTERY WHICH WILL CAPTIVATE YOU TILL THE STUNNING ENDING

A crime wave has hit town. The target is a highly sought-after brand of streetwear called Hybird X, clothing that costs a fortune and resells for unbelievable prices. Houses are burgled, young men mugged on the streets . . . and finally, a young man dies, all for the sake of his shoes.

And then another boy’s body is found in a pile of rubbish. Meanwhile, illegal steroids are flooding the streets.

A shadowy figure called Darke and his teams of young criminals seem to be behind it all.

Detectives Jackman and Evans must take on a fiendish criminal, while still haunted by Alistair Ashcroft, the serial killer they never caught.

WHO IS DARKE AND WHAT DOES HE REALLY WANT?

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the shocking ending.

My Review

I was very pleased to see this latest book in the brilliant Jackman and Evans series released.  This is book 5 in the series and while it does work as stand alone I would recommend you read book 4 first as the events in The Guilty Ones are relevant to this book.

Jackman and his team are still recovering from the mental and physical injuries inflicted by Ashcroft and are using a crime lull to recharge.  Nothing much is happening apart from illegal steroids and a few break ins.

I love Jackman’s team they all care about each other and each have their area of expertise that all adds together to make a very effective team.  Nobody wants that to change so when an nemesis from Marie Evans’ past looks like becoming the fly in the ointment the whole team are on guard to protect her.

Things in Saltern le fen were never going to remain quiet for long and when the body of a boy turns up murder investigation is back on the agenda as the team dive in to remove more criminals from the streets.

This is very much an emotional roller coaster of a book with abuse and people trafficking intermingled with other side stories it makes for a totally gripping read.  I particularly loved the part played by Sheba the German Shepherd.

Very much a psychological thriller with twists, turns and shocks all the way through.  An excellent read as I would expect from the phenomenal Joy Ellis.  Scores on the doors –  5 golden stars from me.

”The Stolen Boys’ is certainly one hell of a read and topical too in a society where possessions are often treasured more than life itself.  Yes the nature of the crimes are rather gruesome to say the least but the author has in no way glorified violence and the violence is not gratuitous in any way.  In fact the violence is more implied and left to the reader’s imagination.  The author’s writing style is such that you can’t fail to be drawn into the story and before you know it you are hooked on the book.  Read more here

My thoughts

This is book 7 but the books work perfectly as stand alone.

Sophie Allen has been promoted to Detective Superintendent and is still getting used to her new powers when a new case lands on her desk that sees her working once again with Lydia a colleague from her past.

This is a complicated case with prison smuggling becoming entangled with racial hatred and murder that strikes very close to home for the teams when one of their own goes missing.

It is a fast-paced story with many twists and turns as the 2 teams and 2 cases struggle to find a way forward.  If you like the detective investigative side of crime fiction you will love this book as we follow the teams as they pick their way through the few clues they have to find a way forward.  It isn’t until the end that the clues become leads and all the strands start to knit together.

The characters are complex and realistic I particularly like the part played by Danny and his family and overall the compassionate way the scenes were set.

A gripping read that keeps the readers’ interest all the way through.

In Case You Missed It I am resharing my Missing Lies post.  This is book 7 in the Brilliant DI Mariner series by Chris Collett.

Missing Lies (DI Tom Mariner #7)

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

18-year-old Grace Clifton vanishes on her way home from work. Amazingly, not a single witness comes forward. But Detective Tom Mariner suspects that she ran away from her overbearing, rich father.

A PACKAGE ARRIVES AT THE POLICE STATION. IT CONTAINS GRACE’S CLOTHES, NEATLY FOLDED AND CLEANED.

Then another woman disappears. And a disturbing pattern begins to emerge.

WHO IS TAKING THEM?

Detective Mariner must track down a suspected serial killer in his toughest, and strangest, case yet, with a conclusion that will have you gasping.

Perfect for fans of Peter James, Angela Marsons, Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson. This is the seventh book in the DI MARINER SERIES.

My Review

This is Book 7 in the DI Mariner series and I have read and loved every book.  It does work very well as stand alone but I think you will probably want to read them all as they are very addictive.

Mariner is feeling a little out of sorts.  His partner, Tony Knox has been seconded to a special operations project. Vicky Jesson is fairly knew and Charlie Glover is not really a colleague Mariner could confide in.  That said, disjointed though the team may be, they all get along and look out for each other.

To add to Mariners problems he recently lost his girlfriend and ended up with guardianship of Jamie, her severely autistic brother.  So with caring responsibilities to add to the stresses of his position he is pulled many ways and his new relationship with Suzy is suffering as a result.

When a young woman goes missing the initial thoughts are she had run away and with no body and no clues the team don’t really have much to go on.  When more young women go missing the links are made and the race is on to find the abductor before he takes anyone else.

This is a real emotional roller coaster ride of a book with twists and turns all the way through and the people I had marked as possible bad guys – well I couldn’t have been more wrong.  The characters still have more to reveal about themselves and continue to develop.

Another adrenaline pumping addition to a brilliant series.  5 Golden stars from me.

THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “DEAD OF NIGHT.”
