ADVENT BOOK BLOG Mar-2018 (2) – Unworthy #detective #crimefiction @stewartgiles

Advent Book Blog day 6 and in the limelight it is UNWORTHY by one of my favourite authors: Stewart Giles. This was actually the first book I read in his self-published series but I have since read every one of his books several times and love them more each time. This one, however, holds a special place in my heart for many reasons.

UNWORTHY (DS Jason Smith #8)

Available from AMAZON UK   US   AU   CA

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

THE UNWORTHY MUST PAY.

DS Jason Smith is dragged away from paternity leave when a woman is killed with her baby in the next room. When more women with children are brutally murdered, Smith discovers that they all have something in common – they all share a secret. When he finds out that the mother of his own child is on this list of ‘Unworthy’ women, he finds himself in a race against time to stop the killer before his whole world comes crashing down around him.

An action packed thriller filled with the twists, turns and red herrings we expect from Stewart Giles.  This is an edge of your seat page-turner that will appeal to all readers of crime fiction

My Review

This book gripped me from the very first page and I can confirm that it works perfectly as stand alone.

Somebody is murdering mothers of small children and leaving the word UNWORTHY at the crime scene.  Why are these women unworthy and who is playing judge, jury and executioner?  Jason Smith is dragged from leave to find out.  As the murderer gets too close for comfort all bets are off as Smith becomes determined to stop this person before it is too late.

This is a real roller coaster of a book that had me turning page after page to find out what happens next.  The adrenaline keeps pumping right to the very end  where we are treated to a real shocker of an ending.

Jason Smith has grown and developed throughout the series into a complex, realistic character.  He has a baby with Erica, who is another member of the team and is currently on maternity leave.  His superior is Bryony Brownhill and I am sure there is a lot yet to be discovered about this character.

Stewart is a brilliant author and his books are dark but also have a little humour woven in to the story to offset the darkness which makes them a real unputdownable read.

Definitely worth the 5 stars. I am really looking forward to The Enigma which is book 1 in a new series featuring Jason Smith and also Harriet Taylor from Stewart’s other series.

THE SETTING

York is a historic walled city in North Yorkshire, England.

At the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss, York is the traditional county town of the historic county of Yorkshire. York Minster and a variety of cultural and sporting activities make it a popular tourist destination.

THE DETECTIVES

DS Jason Smith is an Australian who was sent to York to live with his Grandmother when his sister disappeared from a beach.  He has suffered many losses in his short life and is now a dedicated detective.  He is a bit of a loose cannon he has his own way of doing things and that doesn’t always mean following orders and procedures.

DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond.  She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

Stewart Giles – Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live. After Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later. 3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series. The Beekeeper hit the shelves and hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well. The third in the series, The Backpacker I have self-published and is now available.

THE LOST CHILDREN by Steve Parker

Available from AMAZON
Discover a crime thriller full of shocking twists by one of the most exciting new authors you’ll read this year.
A MAN IS SHOT DEAD IN THE STREET. BUT WHAT THE POLICE FIND NEARBY IS FAR WORSE.
An elderly African man is found dead in the street, shot through the head. The killing has the hallmark of a professional assassin. Dumped in a waste bin next to the dead man is the dismembered torso of a child.
On his first day back at work, disgraced Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson finds himself teamed up again with newly promoted Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks.
They must hunt down a ruthless killer with connections that go far beyond anything they’ve ever come across before.
Within days they know who committed the murders and why, but are left reeling when they are ordered by the government to release the child’s killers.

FINDING THE KILLERS WASN’T THE HARD PART. BRINGING THEM TO JUSTICE IS.

This is the second in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth.

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Martina Cole.

TWO DETECTIVES WHO HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT EACH OTHER MUST WORK TOGETHER.

Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson is a young and (thanks to family money) wealthy womaniser, separated from his model wife and tipped to be the youngest ever commissioner of police. He knows he’s weak when it comes to practical policing and struggles to find a place among his peers, desperate to be a good policeman and not just a ‘climber’.
Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks is a foul-mouthed, working-class officer. He grew up surrounded by rogues and villains to become a first-class thief taker with the Met police. However, his childish attitude has short-circuited his career and he spends his days antagonising as many people as he can.

THE AUTHOR
Steve Parker is a retired police officer who served for 20 years in numerous high-profiles squads.

THE SETTING
Bermondsey is an area of London nestled on the banks of the River Thames. It once had a reputation for housing more armed robbers, murderers and career criminals than anywhere else in the country. Now one of the most upmarket places to live and work in London, it has all but severed itself from its working-class roots. Home to the iconic Tower Bridge and crammed with expensive apartments, art galleries, fancy restaurants and famous residents. But for the police, those who truly know, Bermondsey never lost its roots . . . or its reputation.

If you have read book 1 then you will know Steve isn’t afraid to use bad language and include graphic scenes in his books, and this one is no different so be warned the is bad language, I counted over 10 swear words in the prologue alone, but they fit perfectly within the situations they are used, plus swearing in books has never bothered me.  Read more here

My Review

Wow!  I am not really sure where to start with this one. I love adrenaline pumping thrillers, the more explicit the better and the first book in this series ticked every box so I was very excited to read this one.   It is heart rending in parts, shockingly so but unfortunately it is also very realistic and I truly believe this does happen even in today’s ‘modern society’ so on with the book……

What we have here is a complex story with many strands and the reader is taken on a rocky road trip to watch all the strands become entangled with Paterson and Clocks working their way through the spaghetti to find out what is actually going on.

Corruption, witchcraft, cover ups and money laundering are just a few we can add politics and culture into the mix and sprinkle a vigilante soldier on top and you can be assured you have one hell of a wonderful read.

Then on top of a totally shocking twisty turny, breathtaking story we have the detectives: Paterson and Clocks, what a duo.  In book one there was a lack of common ground between the two, in this book they have got over that and are now united in their quest to get the bad guys and the humour interlaced brings a brilliant dimension to the book.

That is all I am going to say.  Go and grab a copy and get reading this is what Crime Fiction should be.  An unforgettable read and I loved every page.  I just hope book 3 is on the way.

My one regret in this book is that the synopsis contains a massive spoiler and that did affect my enjoyment of the book but still a well earned 5 stars.

This also has a little twist on the usual crime books, as the superintendent is one of the main characters investigating the murder. I can honestly say I haven’t seen before, usually they’re in the background making it harder for people to do their jobs. Also Ray Paterson is a bit flash, driving round in an Aston Martin wearing Gucci shoes and posh suits, coming from money he doesn’t really have to work either unlike your usual copper.  Read more here

My review

I am a big fan of Joffe Books.  Their books are usually fast paced with a minimum of padding and that suits me perfectly.  I was very excited to hear Steve Parker was joining their talented team and was looking forward to reading this new release.

I wasn’t disappointed the book starts with a gruesome murder and zooms along at a very fast pace with plenty of action and insight into the characters along the way.  Very human characters and Steve has skillfully managed to build curve balls into the characters as well as the story.  The end result is an adrenaline pumping page-turner that I couldn’t put down.

As far as tick lists go this ticked every one of my requirements and some I didn’t know I had.  Ray Paterson is a rich ladies man who is fast tracking up the career ladder.  His life is a car crash.  They say money can’t buy you happiness, well it seems to be buying Ray a whole lot of trouble and heartache. Some members of the team doubt his ability to be SIO of such a sadistic murder case which adds a new dimension to the story.

The team is made up of some very unique characters some I like and some I don’t but what I do like is the way the author has developed the characters so that they grow on the reader.  I particularly like Clocks behind the clown exterior lies a very perceptive detective and this comes across perfectly.  Jordan is the loveable one.  The team comprises a very healthy mix of different personalities that MAKE the story.

I read a lot of crime fiction but I have never read one where you get about half way and wonder what is in the second half of the book only to find that it ain’t over yet the twists and turns and shocks continue right to the very end which is an edge of the seat breath-taking ending – WOW

An absolutely stunning read and I am really looking forward to the next book.

The Enigma (DS Jason Smith & DC Harriet Taylor #1) by Stewart Giles #crimefiction #detective @stewartgiles

What a thrilling adventure The Enigma is! I was hooked from the very beginning with plenty of twists and turns to keep me turning those pages! – On the Shelf Reviews

The Enigma (DS Jason Smith & DC Harriet Taylor #1)

Available from Amazon UK US AU CA

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new detective series featuring the detectives from both the series’ we know and love.

In Trotterdown, Cornwall a boat, The Enigma washes in to the harbour. The skipper is dead, and Harriet Taylor is brought in to investigate. But 1 dead body is not the only crime the team have to deal with.

Meanwhile, further up the coast in Whitby a boat washes up on the rocks just outside the harbour. Everyone on board is dead. Whitby Police are out of their depth, so DS Jason Smith is called in to help.

It soon becomes clear the cases are connected and the teams from York and Trotterdown settle down to work with each other.

This is a unique story with twist, turns and shocks all the way through making it an adrenaline pumping read you will not be able to put down.

My thoughts

This is the first in a new series featuring detectives from Stewart’s other series’; Harriet from the brilliant DC Harriet Taylor series set in Cornwall and DS Smith from the awesome Smith series set in York.

Now I am a BIG Stewart Giles fan I think the guy has real talent and each book is better than the last. I have had the pleasure of reading the whole Smith series back to back and I have also read the Harriet books so I was very excited to hear of this new series.

Although there are many murders this is not a particularly gory read the author has expertly managed to build in the revulsion and evilness of the murders while making it acceptable reading for the more feint hearted of crime fiction fans.

Smith and Whitton married at the end of book 8: Unworthy, and Laura, their daughter, is now 18 months old. Whitton is back at work full time and Smith is feeling very protective of his new family which is understandable given all the loved ones he has lost and the death and destruction he lives with every day. I think you need to take this into account when reading this book if you haven’t read the previous ones but otherwise it is a perfect stand alone story.

Harriet Taylor comes from Edinburgh and transferred to Cornwall when her husband was killed in an accident with his lover in the car and she found herself subject to a lot of gossiping and sniggering behind her back. She has no plans to return to Edinburgh anytime soon.

I wont rewrite the synopsis but boats wash up in York and Whitby with Harriet and Smith being on the respective investigations. It soon becomes clear that the link is Edinburgh. Will Harriet face her ex colleagues and travel back to her home town to investigate? Meanwhile Smith receives threatening messages as a nemesis from his past reappears.

This is a fast paced read with twists, turns and danger around every corner. Smith and Harriet are at risk and so are the people they care about as a psychopathic killer with absolutely no conscience travels the UK leaving dead bodies in his wake.

I just kept turning page after page it is an adrenaline pumping read I simply could not put down and as the pages kept turning the endings were total curve balls I really was not expecting.

All I can say is WOW this is a must read for anyone who loves crime fiction and to the author: please hurry up with the next book.

Absolutely awesome definitely 5 Golden Stars (maybe platinum) this is now top of my Picks of 2018 list.

This is a fast paced read with twists, turns and danger around every corner. Smith and Harriet join forces to stop a psychopathic killer no conscience.

THE DETECTIVES

DC Harriet Taylor had only been married for 2 years when her philandering husband was killed in a car crash. It is common knowledge around the station that the woman who died next to him was his latest lover. Harriet transferred to Trotterdown to escape the gossip and sympathetic looks. She is now finding her way around Cornwall and getting to know the other members of the team.

What readers are saying about The Enigma:

‘From the first vividly described opening scene in Trotterdown, Cornwall, I was hooked. Intrigue, suspense, danger, plot twists, a ruthless, unstoppable villain; this book has it all.’ – Heather Opperman

‘This is a fast paced read with twists, turns and danger around every corner. Smith and Harriet are at risk and so are the people they care about as a psychopathic killer with absolutely no conscience travels the UK leaving dead bodies in his wake.’ – Books n All

This is an action-packed page-turner with more twists and turns than a pretzel. The explosive ending is explosive. What a riveting story to start a new series with! .- Linda Strong Book Reviews

The book is a brilliant amalgamation of two of the best police officers in the country and the chemistry between the two of them is brilliant once they learn to trust each other. – Black Books Blog

LOw lake 2 cover jpg.jpgLOW LAKE (Tyrone Swift #5)

It turns out that there are many people who might have wanted Kim dead.

And then another body turns up close to home and Swift realises his own life may be danger.

LOW LAKE is a beautifully written mystery that will have you gripped from start to pulsating finish.

Perfect for fans of Robert Galbraith, P.D. James, or Ruth Rendell.

THE DETECTIVE

THE TYRONE SWIFT DETECTIVE SERIES
BOOK 1: THE LADY VANISHED
BOOK 2: BLOOD SECRETS
BOOK 3: TWO LOVERS, SIX DEATHS
BOOK 4: WATCHING YOU
BOOK 5: LOW LAKE

My Review

This is Book 5 in the Tyrone Swift series but the books work perfectly as stand-alone.

A young woman, Kim, with a lifetime fear of water is found drowned.  The verdict is accidental death as she suffered from epilepsy and had suffered a seizure.  Swift is employed by Kim’s friend to find out what happened as he doesn’t believe she would go near the water.  Kim had a violent start to life and was brought up by a strange woman with an unusual vision on education and guiding young people to adulthood.

The book moves along at a steady pace and gains momentum as it progresses.  There are many twists and turns along the way as the reader is caught up in the intrigue and suspense towards a real jawdropping shocker of an ending nobody will see coming.

I like Swift.  He is a complex character that develops well into a well rounded realistic character.  His girlfriend, Nora, I don’t like so much.  I think she is high maintenance and not a good match for Swift.  Bella, on the other hand, I do like she is compassionate and caring and would make a good fit for Swift so I will be watching for further books to see how his relationships pan out.

This is a gripping story and one I easily bought in to.  It is unique and interesting and has the ability to keep the adrenaline pumping.

And where does the German businessman Conrad Gunther fit in? Mysterious lights at Lockyer Tarn, a homeless man hiding out on the Yorkshire Dales, a stolen Volvo and a former Gestapo officer are all seemingly linked in some manner.

And then the British spy services get involved . . . Will Crow have his investigation shut down before he can catch the murderer.

My Review

Firstly, thank you to Joffe Books for the advance copy of this book.  This is my unbiased review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

If you like a good old fashioned murder mystery this is definitely for you.  This is book 4 of a series that is being republished by Joffe Books and is not only set in the 1960’s but was written at that time so you need to bear that in mind while reading as things have changed a lot since that time.

A man pays for sex but treats the woman badly which has her partner seeking revenge.  He is found dead but what looks, at first like a simple case of assault turns out to be anything but and Inspector Crow has his work cut out finding clues and following leads.

This is a complex story with many tangled threads and surprising twists as Crow tries to work out what is being covered up.

It is a steadily moving book with enough to keep the reader’s interest.

My Review

I am a big fan of Charlie Gallagher and was looking forward to reading this stand-alone book.  I wasn’t disappointed and I have to say this book is very unique.  The story revolves around a 16 year old girl who has already dealt with a load of back luck and other problems that fate has thrown at her.   She is living with an Aunt, after escaping her alcoholic mother, when her aunt is killed in an RTA.  Alone again she is under the care of Social Services so she is perfectly safe right?

I absolutely love Rhiannon’s character.  She is a very believable character that builds depth throughout the book.  Instead of folding under all the misfortune that comes her way this feisty kid refuses to be cowed and determined to do the right thing she picks herself up dusts down and prepares to take down a drug ring.  A massive challenge for an adult but for a 16 year old you would think it is near on impossible.  Meet Rhiannon – 16 going on 36 brilliance personified.

Charlie has created a 16 year old that is exactly what a 16year old is from the language and actions to reactions.  He has perfectly found how to describe the mannerisms and personality I would expect of a girl that age who has seen far too much of the reality of alcohol addiction.

She becomes entangled in the lives of Drug dealers who are trying to take over the village where she is temporarily homed.  She is determined to save the alcoholic William and he in turn tries to save her they form a friendship but if Rhi is to save William she has a massive job on her hands without the help of the Drug dealers who think he shopped them to the police.

It is a fast paced thriller that keeps the pages turning as we are taken on a roller coaster ride with twists and turns a many and I didn’t have a clue how it was going to turn out.  If I thought it was fast paced at the beginning from about 75% the pace picks up and the adrenaline pumps as we are treated to a mind blowing conclusion you will not forsee.

One of the best books I have read this year and is definitely on my ‘Picks of 2018’ list.  Definitely worth the 5 stars and more.

BLOG TOUR – Lavender Dreams (Life After Us #2) by Rebekah Dodson #dystopian @junctionpublish

Today I am opening the Blog Tour for LAVENDER DREAMS.  This is book 2 in the Life After Us series by Rebekah Dodson.  Book 1, Poppy Bloom, ended on a cliff-hanger so I am opening the tour with the final few paragraphs from that book in preparation for reading Lavender Dreams.

Poppy Bloom – extract:

The man was peering into the forest, looking everywhere and anywhere all at once with his piercing eyes. Behind him, two soldiers had their guns pointed into the backs of Lucy and Spencer. They had their hands up.

Vicki’s hands flew to cover her mouth—the gun was swirling with blinding electrical light. The same light Danielle had talked about, the vaporizing kind. She started to walk forward, but Ambrose snatched her around the waist. “Don’t you dare!” He hissed in her ear. “You can’t save them!”

Vicki shook her head, but she couldn’t fight him off. She watched in silent horror. Lucy was openly weeping, the sound of her crying drowning out the soldiers blindly crashing through the woods in every direction. Vicki could barely make out what she was saying: “Spencer, how could you? How could you report them?”

To their right, another soldier went down, with a hefty cry of pain splitting the air, momentarily drowning out Lucy’s cries and Vicki lost whatever else Lucy was screaming.

She stared up at Ambrose with eyes wide. I can’t let them die!

Ambrose gripped her tighter and shook his head. She knew what he was saying: there’s nothing you can do.

“No?” The tall man in the beret shouted into the forest. “You’ll let them die? Oh, well. My soldiers will find you anyway; it’s only a matter of time.”

He waved his hand and stalked behind the soldiers, out of Vicki’s view.

Both soldiers pulled the trigger at the same time, and the energy shot from their weapons. Vicki watched in horror as the kind couple who’d taken them in, saved Ambrose’s life, and shared many meals with them, light up like an artificial X-ray machine. Their bodies filled with blinding light, and then with a dazzling spark, they were gone. A tendril of gray smoke rose from a pile of ashes in the ground.

Vicki cried out.

Ambrose clamped his hand down over her mouth, silencing her. “Now you’ve done it,” he said, his voice shaking with terror.

Two soldiers called out to each other and headed their way, fast.

Ambrose glanced behind them and spun her around to face him. “Vicki, we have to jump.”

“The creek’s too shallow. It’ll kill us!”

“Would you rather stay here and be vaporized?”

Vicki shook her head.

“Before we jump, I just need to do one thing.”

“Seriously?” The crashing behind her grew even louder. “What could be so important…”

He pulled her face to his and smashed his lips against hers, quickly and smoothly.

She didn’t even have time to think, or to embrace it. It just happened. And for a fleeting moment, she didn’t want it to end. But it was over in a flash, and as soon as he pulled away, he gently pushed her into the rushing waters below. Shortly behind her, Ambrose plunged into the icy water.

THOMAS BLADEN SERIES
Book 1: STANDPOINT
Book 2: LINE OF SIGHT
Book 3: CAUSE & EFFECT
Book 4: SHADOW STATE
Book 5: FLASHPOINT

My Review

This is the first book I have read by Derek and is book 5 in the Thomas Bladen series.  It works well as stand-alone but think it would be more enjoyable to have read the series from the beginning.

The book starts with a bang in the form of a terrorist attack and the suspense keeps building.    When 2 of their bosses disappear Thomas and Karl are charged with finding them.

There are many twists and turns to the story as we are taken on a tour of the corrupt underworld of the security services.

With all the odds against success with Thomas survive and just what happened to Christine?

A fast moving story with characters that develop well I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the back list.
