Overall I thought the book was a very good read for it’s time, although in places it did come across a bit dated.  If you are looking for a nostalgic crime/mystery book then I would recommend this book as it was quite an enjoyable read.  Read more here

BLOG TOUR – MISSING LIES by Chris Collett @crime_crow @joffebooks #TeamJoffeBooks #crimefiction

A few days late, unfortunately, but I am sharing my review of the latest release in the DI Mariner series: MISSING LIES. As always Chris Collett has pulled out the stops and released another stunning novel.

Missing Lies (DI Tom Mariner book 7)

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

18-year-old Grace Clifton vanishes on her way home from work. Amazingly, not a single witness comes forward. But Detective Tom Mariner suspects that she ran away from her overbearing, rich father.

A PACKAGE ARRIVES AT THE POLICE STATION. IT CONTAINS GRACE’S CLOTHES, NEATLY FOLDED AND CLEANED.

Then another woman disappears. And a disturbing pattern begins to emerge.

WHO IS TAKING THEM?

Detective Mariner must track down a suspected serial killer in his toughest, and strangest, case yet, with a conclusion that will have you gasping.

Perfect for fans of Peter James, Angela Marsons, Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson. This is the seventh book in the DI MARINER SERIES.

THE SETTING
Birmingham is a city of stark contrasts with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Playing a key role in the industrial revolution, it helped shape the nation’s manufacturing industry

But with its many green spaces, Birmingham also borders on the beautiful countryside of Worcestershire and Warwickshire, is just a few miles from Stratford on Avon and a short drive from the wild country of mid-Wales.

Birmingham’s population is large and ethnically diverse, and while urban regeneration has forged a modern and culturally vibrant city, the decaying remnants of the industrial past and 1960s concrete jungle give it a unique and gritty character; the dark underbelly policed by DI Tom Mariner and his team.

THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Tom Mariner is, on the surface, an average dedicated policeman, but his experiences as a younger man have given him an insight into life on the dark side, and a clear sense of right and wrong. Mariner has little interest in material things. He lives in a modest canal-side cottage, enjoys the occasional (real) beer and game of dominoes and drives an old car. He is most at home in the outdoors, with an OS map and a compass, and in times of crisis, will take off and walk for miles in any weather.

THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “DEAD OF NIGHT.”

DI MARINER SERIES
Book 1: Deadly Lies
Book 2: Innocent Lies
Book 3: Killer Lies
Book 4: Baby Lies
Book 5: Married Lies
Book 6: Buried Lies
Book 7: Missing Lies

My Review

This is Book 7 in the DI Mariner series and I have read and loved every book. It does work very well as stand alone but I think you will probably want to read them all as they are very addictive.

Mariner is feeling a little out of sorts. His partner, Tony Knox has been seconded to a special operations project. Vicky Jesson is fairly knew and Charlie Glover is not really a colleague Mariner could confide in. That said, disjointed though the team may be, they all get along and look out for each other.

To add to Mariners problems he recently lost his girlfriend and ended up with guardianship of Jamie, her severely autistic brother. So with caring responsibilities to add to the stresses of his position he is pulled many ways and his new relationship with Suzy is suffering as a result.

When a young woman goes missing the initial thoughts are she had run away and with no body and no clues the team don’t really have much to go on. When more young women go missing the links are made and the race is on to find the abductor before he takes anyone else.

This is a real emotional roller coaster ride of a book with twists and turns all the way through and the people I had marked as possible bad guys – well I couldn’t have been more wrong. The characters still have more to reveal about themselves and continue to develop.

Another adrenaline pumping addition to a brilliant series. 5 Golden stars from me.

CHRIS COLLETT – AUTHOR BIO

I was born and grew up in a Norfolk seaside town, almost as far east as it’s possible to go in England without falling into the North Sea. There I worked variously in a boarding house (now defunct) a local bakery (closed down) and a crisp factory (razed to the ground). I graduated in Liverpool, then for twenty-five years taught children and young people with learning disabilities, including autism, before going into higher education as a senior lecturer.
Mindful of its reputation, I moved somewhat reluctantly to Birmingham, where I met my husband, in 1981. But just a few years later DI Tom Mariner was created to police its mean streets, and these days I relish the vibrancy and rich social history of the city. After eight outings for Mariner, I still feel as if I’ve barely scratched the surface.
Recently retired from lecturing and I’m currently luxuriating in the time I now have to continue the Mariner series, alongside published short stories and academic works. In my spare time, among other things, I’m a manuscript assessor for the Crime Writers Association.

BOOKS BY STEWART GILES – Blog 3 of 4 #crimefiction #policeprocedural #detective

Today on my Books by Stewart Giles Blog it is the turn of books 6,7 & 8: Selene, Horsemen and Unworthy.  These are the last of the DS Smith series that have been published so far but Stewart is busily writing book 9.  Tomorrow we will be looking at the DC Harriet Taylor series.  The first book in the new DS Jason Smith & DC Harriet Taylor series: THE ENIGMA is now available from AMAZON

Selene: (DS Jason Smith Book 6)

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

A man is found tucked up in bed with his throat sliced open two days after Christmas.

DS Jason Smith and his team are baffled. It appears he has been drugged, killed and carefully wrapped up in a duvet. The only evidence Smith finds are some strands of hair belonging to a woman. One month later, another man is killed in exactly the same manner but there appears to be no link whatsoever to the two men apart from the fact that they were both single, lonely and middle aged.

Haunted by lucid dreams and terrifying double awakenings, Smith stumbles upon something that will send him on a hunt for the most baffling murderer the people of York has even seen. With time quickly running out before the next full moon and the safety of one of his closest colleagues entering the equation, Smith finally closes in on the most terrifying murderer he has ever come across.

This is a roller-coaster ride of a thriller with twists and turns all the way to an ending you won’t expect.

My review: WOW what can I say I am absolutely loving this DS Smith series by Stewart Giles. Selene is book 6 and is another riveting page-turner. The series gets better book by book.

Selene is 10 years old when she sneaks around in the middle of the night to watch a Pagan Ceremony. What she sees shocks her into giving away her hiding place and she is captured and imprisoned. 6 years later she excapes but the experience has left deep pyschological scars.

Sad, lonely, middle aged men are being murdered and then tucked up in bed. This is a very difficult case for Smith and his team. There are no clues, no apparent motive and no links between the victims. As time drags on the team becomes depressed and nobody knows where to turn.

I love how the team develop book by book and Smith is really growing up he has had a lot of heartbreak and tragedy in his life and these have moulded him in to the person he is. That person is totally unique and my hat is off to the author for the way he has created and developed Smith and the rest of his team. All are unique characters with their own quirks and personalities but they all make up a very effective team.

I was sad to see one of my favourite characters leave but this is a realistic series and people come and go.

A very intriguing book with a lot of twists and turns and red herrings along the way. It had me guessing all the way to the end and of course I was totally wrong.

Another 5 star read – Brilliant!

Horsemen: (DS Jason Smith Book 7)

Available from Amazon UK US AU CA

One draining murder investigation after another has left DS Jason on the brink of losing his sanity and he needs a break.

Smith sets off for the peaceful Yorkshire village of Scarpdale for two weeks of country air, slow walks by the lakes and no mobile phone reception. He wakes up on his first morning to find three policemen outside his room. A young woman has been found dead next to one of the lakes. Smith was seen talking to the woman the night before.

Smith is begged by Jimmy Phoenix to find out what happened to his daughter. Against his better judgment, Smith agrees and starts to ask questions, but the locals are not giving anything away. When Sophie’s boyfriend, Lewis Van Camp is found dead an hour before her funeral, Smith is baffled. Lewis was his odds on favourite for Sophie’s murder.

Smith quickly realizes that rival horse breeders, the Van Camps and the Phoenix’s are involved somehow. Everybody he speaks to talks of something that happened in New York the previous summer; something sinister involving these horsemen but nobody seems to know exactly what went on.

An action packed thriller filled with the twists, turns and red herrings we expect from Stewart Giles. This is an edge of your seat page-turner that will appeal to all readers of crime fiction.

My review:  I love this series. The books just get better and better and this one is no different.

I am pleased to see Smith starting to mature and get it together with Whitton. They make a brilliant team both personally and professionally. I also like the humour Stewart has run through the books especially with Chalmers and Smyth I can actually see that happening in real life.

The story revolves around the people with big money the underlying theme being ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’

Smith is planning a break away from all the evil and death in his private and professional life but first he needs to solve the McDonalds robberies that are taking place around the city. This brings him face to face with Jimmy Phoenix, a self made millionaire.

The McDonalds case closed Smith sets off for the Yorkshire wilderness but typical of Smith’s world a break is not going to happen anytime soon.

Love, love, love this story. There are so many twists and turns as Smith tries to untangle secrets and the intrigue builds right to the end. As is typical the ending is a totally unexpected.

Characters that grow with every book, a unique story with twists, turns and red herrings this is everything a crime thriller should be and more. A must read for lovers of great detective stories.

5 golden stars from me.

Unworthy: (DS Jason Smith book 8)

Available from Amazon UK US AU CA

DS Jason Smith is dragged away from paternity leave when a woman is killed with her baby in the next room. When more women with children are brutally murdered, Smith discovers that they all have something in common – they all share a secret. When he finds out that the mother of his own child is on this list of ‘Unworthy’ women, he finds himself in a race against time to stop the killer before his whole world comes crashing down around him.

An action packed thriller filled with the twists, turns and red herrings we expect from Stewart Giles. This is an edge of your seat page-turner that will appeal to all readers of crime fiction.

My review: This book gripped me from the very first page and I can confirm that it works perfectly as stand alone.

Somebody is murdering mothers of small children and leaving the word UNWORTHY at the crime scene. Why are these women unworthy and who is playing judge, jury and executioner? Jason Smith is dragged from leave to find out. As the murderer gets too close for comfort all bets are off as Smith becomes determined to stop this person before it is too late.

This is a real roller coaster of a book that had me turning page after page to find out what happens next. The adrenaline keeps pumping right to the very end where we are treated to a real shocker of an ending.

Jason Smith has grown and developed throughout the series into a complex, realistic character. He has a baby with Erica, who is another member of the team and is currently on maternity leave. His superior is Bryony Brownhill and I am sure there is a lot yet to be discovered about this character.

Stewart is a brilliant author and his books are dark but also have a little humour woven in to the story to offset the darkness which makes them a real unputdownable read.

Definitely worth the 5 stars. I am really looking forward to the next book which is book 1 in a new series featuring Jason Smith and also Harriet Taylor from Stewart’s other series.

THE SETTING
York is a historic walled city in North Yorkshire, England.
At the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss, York is the traditional county town of the historic county of Yorkshire. York Minster and a variety of cultural and sporting activities make it a popular tourist destination.

He has suffered many losses in his short life and is now a dedicated detective. He is a bit of a loose cannon he has his own way of doing things and that doesn’t always mean following orders and procedures.

DC Erica Whitton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond. She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

Today on my Books by Stewart Giles Blog we look at books 3,4 & 5 in the DS Smith series:   Ladybird, Occam’s Razor and Harlequin.

Ladybird (DS Jason Smith #3) by Stewart Giles

Available from AMAZON UK   US   AU   CA

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

The Goul is arrested for Murder and Jason Smith is on sick leave.

Detective Sergeant Jason Smith is days away from the end of his sick leave after a case that almost cost him his life when he gets a call from an old friend. His friend has been arrested for the murder of a student. He wants Smith to investigate the murder and prove his innocence. Smith is persuaded return to work. The student was killed with a bread knife. Ladybirds were scattered on his dead body.

When another man is found dead with ladybirds on his body, Smith enlists the help of an insect doctor, the enigmatic DR Karen Wood, to try and understand the significance of the ladybirds. As Smith gets drawn closer to this mysterious woman and more and more men wind up dead with ladybirds on their bodies Smith quickly realises that Dr Wood is not who she seems to be.

Smith and his team unearth a terrible secret from twenty years earlier; somebody wants justice and, as more and more men die, Smith realises he is running out of time to find out who.

This is a fast-paced page-turner with twists and turns all the way to an ending you won’t see coming.

My Review – Ladybird is book 2 in the DS Smith series but they do work brilliantly as stand alone.

The story starts with The Goul, a pathologist, being accused of murder.  He begs Smith for help at a time when Jason is struggling through his grief at the death of his girlfriend, guilt and many other issues.  Will he put aside the bottle to help his old friend or walk away from everything?

I think everyone who has read the previous books will know the answer to that one.  Before Smith has chance to prove The Goul innocent another body is found.  Who is killing young men?

Now I have read books that are full of twists, turns and shockers. Lots of them.  But I can hold my hand up and say that I have never read anything like this one.  The unsub is a totally unique character and definitely throws into the abyss everything I thought I knew about serial killers.  There is plenty of evidence but nothing to match it to.  The ladybirds is an awesome idea and how Stewart thought that one up I really don’t know.

As the bodies stack up the team are running out of ideas and the red herrings and twists and turns are enough to make you dizzy.

The only possibility for the murderer doesn’t quite fit and that adds to the intrigue and suspense.

A totally gripping page-turner with complex characters that build well in depth throughout the story.  A brilliant read and well worth 5 stars.

Occam’s Razor (DS Jason Smith #4) by Stewart Giles

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

A football player is shot dead in front of a packed crowd of people.

DS Jason Smith is put in charge of the investigation. The murder weapon is found in a house across the road from the football ground. It is a rare Russian army issue sniper rifle. As the investigation hits dead end after dead end, two government agents arrive and take over, pushing Smith and his colleagues to the side. As more people die Smith quickly realises these agents are not who they claim to be. He is forced into the dark world of these phantoms and he finds himself at the mercy of his old nemesis; the man who kidnapped his sister years earlier.
This is a gripping thriller with twists and turns all the way to the stunning ending.

My Review – Well the awesome Stewart Giles has done it again! Another absolutely gripping page turner to add to the very addictive DS Smith series. This review is for the newly updated digital version.

A footballer is killed after saving a penalty. 38000 witnesses and no motive! The team is struggling until Smith returns to work.

This is a very twisty turny read as Smith deals with yet another tragedy in his life and his past comes back to haunt him.

Be careful who you trust is the message behind this story and all the way through I kept changing my mind and bouncing around suspects and thoughts only to find out how wrong I was. People are messing with Smith’s head and his life is in danger. It is a roller coaster ride through the dark twisted minds of some evil people and they are happy to use whoever they can to achieve their goal.

It is difficult to review this book without spoilers so all I can really say is clear some time buy the book and settle down for an awesome page-turner that you will never forget.

I am loving this series the books get better and better If you like a good detective read with a unique story line and even more unique, complex characters then this is definitely for you.

5 golden stars from me.

Harlequin (DS Jason Smith #5) by Stewart Giles

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

The circus comes to town and children start to disappear.

Detective Sergeant Jason Smith is persuaded to return to work after three weeks of a marijuana induced haze. Forced to endure the leadership of a new DI, the fulsome Bryony Brownhill, Smith is faced with the most difficult investigation of his colourful career.
When the children who vanished are found murdered in various parts of the city, all clues lead to the circus grounds, but Smith and his team are met with a sinister silence everywhere they turn. Smith digs deeper and discovers the cause of this silence; the chain of events that led up to the vile murders that have shattered the hearts of the people of York.
This is an edge-of-your-seat thriller with an ending that you won’t expect.

My Review – This is book 5 in the DS Smith series and this review is for the reedited and updated digital version.

It is no secret that I am a big fan of Stewart Giles. His books tick a lot of boxes for me especially this Smith series. I suspect Smith could be an acquired taste and you have to read all the books in sequence to understand what he has been through and why he is taking so long to grow up. He is getting there.

As life has dealt him blow after blow he has picked himself back up with the aid of drink, cigarettes and now Marijuana. BUT he has also lost everybody who he cared about including his house. He is trying to put the house back together and his head when Whitton begs him to return to work as a 5 year old child has disappeared from his home.

We have a new DI in charge of the team and she isnt going to stand for Smith’s way of doing things in the same way Bob Chalmers did. But she has never come across anyone like Smith before either.

As more children go missing all clues point to the circus and the troupe have secrets of their own.

This is a very unique story. One that begs the question: Is evil genetic? The team encounter many problems along the course of the investigation and are left reeling when they join up the dots and realise who the killer is. But he hasn’t done yet. Can they catch him before it is too late?

This is a fast paced story that really gets the adrenaline flowing and the pages turning. Twists and turns with more shocks than a ghost train this is a riveting read that I couldn’t put down.

Definitely 5 stars from me

DS Thompson is of the same rank as Jason, but he doesn’t have the same support or success. He and Jason have a love/hate relationship which brings a bit of humour to the series. Thompson is old school and thinks his age should give him respect and privileges, but life doesn’t work that way for him.
DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond. She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

BOOKS BY STEWART GILES – Blog 1 of 4 #crimefiction #policeprocedural #detective

Today is the first of a series of blogs spotlighting books by Stewart Giles.  I am starting with the DS Smith series and today we look at

Phobia, Smith & Boomerang:

Phobia (DS Smith #0.5) – AN ESSENTIAL INTRODUCTION TO THE DS SMITH THRILLER SERIES.

Available from AMAZON

Phobia is a series of five DS Jason Smith cases he worked on before we met him in the first book ‘Smith’. We get insights into what moulded him into the Detective Sergeant we first get a glimpse of in ‘Smith’. Smith quickly realizes that police work isn’t always cut and dried. Justice is not always black and white; there are many shades of grey in between.

My Thoughts:  I am a big fan of Stewart’s books they are easy to read and are a little bit different (but I can’t put my finger on why) and I have LOVED every single one. So I was very excited to be reading this book.

I have to say this is an absolutely brilliant way of bringing the reader up to date with the time before Smith became a DS.  I haven’t seen this done before we usually get snippets throughout the series that you need to put together or a prequel novella so this was an enlightening breath of fresh air.

I also need to add that I am not a fan of short stories I like a book I can get stuck in to.  I usually find that short stories don’t give enough insight into the characters or depth to the story.  Here, again, Stewart has excelled himself.  Each of the 5 stories is gripping and interesting absolutely no padding these are straight down the line detective stories.

I wont say much about the stories as they are short and I don’t want to spoil them for anyone.

Smith: well he grows and develops in each story and we learn more about his character and history but most of all about him and his unique talent for putting together the clues quickly and effectively.

Absolutely brilliant and well worth the 5 stars.

Smith (DS Smith #1) The sleepy historical city of York is about to wake up’

Available from Amazon

It is Christmas Day in York. A woman is found dead in her bed. A suicide note is found on her chest. It reads ‘I am so sorry Martin’. Hours later the police are called to a house a few miles away. A mother & daughter have been brutally attacked; the mother is dead, and the daughter is barely alive. The father is found shaking uncontrollably in the corner of the room. He is covered in blood, but he is unharmed. His name is Martin Willow.

My Thoughts:   I love Stewart Giles work he has a unique way of writing that I love.  His characters are very believable, human and he makes a brilliant job of integrating personal life into the story.

I first met Jason Smith in Unworthy which is book 8 and loved it so decided to go back and start at the beginning.  Phobia covers his life from joining the police to becoming DS by 5 early cases.  However, if you haven’t read that it wont matter.
Jason is suffering nightmares brought on by witnessing his sister disappear from a beach 10 years earlier.  The loss of Laura was the cause of him being shipped from Australia and ending up making a life in York.

The story begins at Christmas with a small family visiting friends.  Such a happy occasion ends in tragedy as the mother is murdered and the little girl left in a coma.  All the clues point to the husband/father.  At the same time their babysitter is found dead assumed to be suicide but forensics show she was murdered.  What are the links and why.  Jason is on a mission to find out.

As Jason and his team try to find a way forward the clues all lead back to the father/ husband, Martin and it is his name that is found on the dead babysitters suicide note.  When an enemy from his past turns up with news about Laura Smith finds himself torn between the cases and finding out what happened to his sister.  The search for Laura sees Jason struggling to cope.

This is a fast paced emotional read that had me turning page after page.  Complex characters that gain depth steadily as the story progresses and the twists and turns make sure the interest and suspense is maintained.  With Smith’s personal issues adding another dimension to the story it makes for a compelling read that I highly recommend.

5 big golden stars from me.

Boomerang (DS Smith #2) – A MAN IS KILLING PEOPLE IN YORK!

Available from AMAZON

Initially, the murders appear to be the random acts of a maniac.  Detective Jason Smith is put in charge of the investigation. It soon becomes clear that the murders are all connected to him in one way or another.  All of the killings correspond to events in Smith’s life and the murderer leaves dates at the crime scene which tie up to important dates in Smith’s history. When one of the dates is a time before Smith was even born, he realises he must look deep into the past to find a way to stop the worst spate of murders in York’s long history.

My Thoughts: This is book 2 in a very addictive series I find myself reaching for the next book as soon as I have finished the previous one.

The story begins with a suicide that turns out to be murder. Then Smith’s life is changed forever. People are dying and the dates are significant dates from the past. Someone has Smith in their sights but why? What happened all those years ago and why is Smith being held accountable?

This is an adrenaline pumping read from the very first page. The suspense and pace build gradually as we progress into the book and the further I got the more invested I was in the story and the characters.

Lets talk about the characters: Jason is the lead character I have followed his journey from the beginning in Phobia and then Smith but if you haven’t read those it is perfectly okay as Stewart makes a brilliant job of building the history into the book. He is flawed he has had a difficult time with many heart-breaking losses and now this! All this comes accross in the book excellently. He is on a mission to put away the bad guys whatever it takes. He is a bit of a loose cannon and a straight talker and that brings humour to the book.

Witton is his favoured partner. She has a lot of feelings for Smith but he isn’t returning them, yet. She has Smith’s back and that makes her vulnerable at times. I think they are a relationship waiting to happen but we will see. They look out for each other and that becomes very important in this story.

The main theme of the story is Smith’s past and part of that is Lucy, an old flame from his teenage years. As the looking back into his past takes Smith out of his comfort zone the murderer is ranking up and the bodies are stacking up. The clock is ticking.

Suspense, twists, turns and curve balls. This book has it all. An adrenaline pumping page turner that I found very difficult to put down. Definitely 5 golden stars from me.

Tomorrow will be Ladybird, Occam’s Razor and Harlequin

UNWORTHY (DS Jason Smith #8) by Stewart Giles

From #1 best-selling author: Stewart Giles comes a new addition to the popular Detective Jason Smith series.

THE UNWORTHY MUST PAY.

This is an edge of your seat page-turner that will appeal to all readers of crime fiction

My Review

This book gripped me from the very first page and I can confirm that it works perfectly as stand alone.

THE DETECTIVES

DS Jason Smith is an Australian who was sent to York to live with his Grandmother when his sister disappeared from a beach.  He has suffered many losses in his short life and is now a dedicated detective.  He is a bit of a loose cannon he has his own way of doing things and that doesn’t always mean following orders and procedures.

DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond.  She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

What readers are saying about Unworthy:

There are more twists and turns in the stories than an alpine road. The characters are brilliantly written and a dark humour is always present but, the main plot is always well thought out and the suspense drags you right to the end.James oneill

Always a good read. Great characters. The ending is intriguing and I’m looking forward to the next in the series to see how things develop.WarrenC

“Unworthy” just got better and better; I loved the twists and turns, and I didn’t want it to end. There’s an App for that!

Another great story with the usual characters and much more. Read the series in order to get the best effect.Thompson V

Excellent story and characters which together give you a great read. Didn’t want to put it down once I’d started.Quiet man

Stewart Giles – Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live. After Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later. 3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series. The Beekeeper hit the shelves and hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well. The third in the series, The Backpacker I have self-published and is now available.

BLOG TOUR – The Woods Murder by Roy Lewis. #TeamJoffeBooks #crimefiction @joffebooks

Today is my stop on the Blog Tour for THE WOODS MURDER by Roy Lewis.  This is Book 3 in the popular Inspector Crow series.  Today I am sharing with you a short article on how Roy came to write The Woods Murder (previously published as A Secret Singing).

A Secret Singing by Roy Lewis

“My partner once gave me a lapel badge—large and yellow—with the words “Trust me—I’m a lawyer”. At parties it was a good talking point. Since Shakespeare (“Let’s kill all the lawyers”) the legal professionals haven’t had a good Press. Which set me to writing The Woods Murder (first published as A Secret Singing). As American poet Carl Sandberg has it “Why does the hearse-horse snicker, hauling the lawyer’s bones?”

“Of course, when a lawyer is murdered there are bound to be lots of suspects. But what would be the connection between the murder of the lawyer and that  of a nine year old girl in Kenton Woods? That’s the problem DI John Crow has to face and he’ll have to deal with a few surprises on the way…”

Nine-year-old Jenny Carson is brutally murdered in Kenton Wood on her way from school.

BOOK 1: DEADLY LIES

Journalist Eddie Barham is found dead in his home. A syringe in his arm and a note by his side reading, ‘No More.’

Open and shut case of suicide? Not for DI Mariner. Hours before, he saw Barham picking up a prostitute in a bar. Mariner discovers Barham’s younger brother, Jamie, hiding in a cupboard under the stairs.

BOOK 2: INNOCENT LIES

Two teenagers go missing on the same day. Just a coincidence?

They are from very different backgrounds: Yasmin is the talented, grammar-school-educated daughter of devout Muslim professionals. Ricky disappears after storming out of his council house after an argument with his mum’s latest boyfriend. .

But Mariner soon discovers that Yasmin is far from the innocent victim her parents think she is. Can he get to the bottom of a perplexing case where no one is what they seem.

BOOK 3: KILLER LIES

First, a badly decomposed body of a young woman is found in a Birmingham sewer. The police can’t identify her and dub her “Madeleine.”

Then an important politician and his wife are shot on an isolated road. “Vengeance is mine” is scrawled in blood at the scene.

And finally, a bomb explosion in the busy city kills five people, causing chaos and panic.

He lives in a modest canal-side cottage, enjoys the occasional (real) ale and game of dominoes and drives an old car. He is most at home in the outdoors, with an OS map and a compass, and in times of crisis, will take off and walk for miles in any weather.
