From #1 best-selling author Joy Ellis, a mystery full of stunning twists and turns.

The most difficult case of Detective Jackman’s life. Who are the guilty ones and is anyone really innocent?

Jackman’s sister-in-law Sarah disappears to London and throws herself into the river. What drove her to this? She was a woman with a seemingly happy home life and two beloved sons.

DI Jackman and DI Evans dig into Sarah’s life. And Jackman realises he knew almost nothing about his sister-in-law’s past.

Then, they discover a woman in a neighbouring village died in similar circumstances.

What is the connection to a convicted murderer whose family are convinced he is innocent? Who is really pulling the strings?

DI Jackman and DS Evans of the Fenland police face a battle against their most dangerous and deadly adversary. And in a case so close to home can Jackman keep his feelings under control?

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime mystery that will keep you turning the pages until the thrilling ending. Set in the atmospheric Lincolnshire Fens, whose isolated villages hide many dark secrets.

Perfect for fans of Rachel Abbott, Sarah A. Denzil, Robert Bryndza, Mel Sherratt, Angela Marsons, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

THE DETECTIVES
DI Jackman leads the investigation. He is extremely smart and has a knack for bringing out the best in his diverse team. DS Marie Evans is haunted by the loss of her husband in a motorbike accident. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and colleagues.

My Review

This is book 4 in the Jackman and Evans series but they do work very well as stand alone.  However, if this is the first book you have read be aware you have missed the background and development of some of the characters which could affect your enjoyment a little.

It is no secret that I am a MASSIVE Joy Ellis fan.  She has 2 police series and a couple of stand alone novels.  Her Nikki Galena series is police procedural whereas this Jackman and Evans series is more psychological thriller.  I do love the way all her novels have slight links and references to her other books and the whole ‘Joy Ellis’ experience is one hell of a thrilling ride.

The book begins with Jackman’s sister in law going missing and turning up drowned in the Thames.  Why did she travel to London to commit suicide and why?  That is the first question Jackman asks himself but it is the first of many as other deaths that appear to be suicide are questioned.

The book is fast paced and thrilling as Jackman and his team race against time to unravel the clues before there are more deaths.  Psychopaths are complicated characters and each has its own peculiarities and Joy has built the character to be a realistic, warped and evil character but one that could very well be living next door.

Intrigue, suspense, twists, turns and shockers all the way through are all interwoven into a complex page-turner you wont be able to put down and the adrenaline keeps pumping right through to the heart stopping ending.  An absolutely brilliant book that leaves the reader in no doubt that Jackman and his team will NEVER be beaten no matter how much evil is thrown at them.

WOW yet again I am left wondering how Joy is ever going to better this book, but I do that with every book she has written and she just keeps getting better and better.

Absolutely brilliant you need to read this book  NOW.

UK #1 Best Seller with THEIR LOST DAUGHTERS and THE FOURTH FRIEND

700,000 books sold and rising!

“I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the sixties and seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!

And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and our two second generation Springer spaniels. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I can, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre was suddenly clear. I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!”

BABY LIES by CHRIS COLLETT

Do you love gripping mysteries with great characters?

Discover Detective Tom Mariner in this critically acclaimed series.

‘Collett is a wonderful writer, subtle, clever, strong on atmosphere and character.’ Yorkshire Post

Six-week-old baby Jessica is abducted from a local nursery. And Detective Tom Mariner realises he’s not going to get the time-off he was hoping for.

The police get a good description of the woman who took Jessica, but the appeal to the public doesn’t generate a single lead.

Then the kidnapper calls demanding money for Jessica’s safe return . . . and a terrible discovery is made in the woods.

Can Mariner get to bottom of a complex case which involves much more than a child abduction?

Discover an absorbing crime mystery full of stunning twists and turns.

Perfect for fans of Peter James, Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson. This is the fourth book in the DI MARINER SERIES, more books coming soon!

THE SETTING
Birmingham is a city of stark contrasts with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Playing a key role in the industrial revolution, it helped shape the nation’s manufacturing industry

But with its many green spaces, Birmingham also borders on the beautiful countryside of Worcestershire and Warwickshire, is just a few miles from Stratford on Avon and a short drive from the wild country of mid-Wales.

Birmingham’s population is large and ethnically diverse, and while urban regeneration has forged a modern and culturally vibrant city, the decaying remnants of the industrial past and 1960s concrete jungle give it a unique and gritty character; the dark underbelly policed by DI Tom Mariner and his team.

THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Tom Mariner is, on the surface, an average dedicated policeman, but his experiences as a younger man have given him an insight into life on the dark side, and a clear sense of right and wrong. Mariner has little interest in material things. He lives in a modest canal-side cottage, enjoys the occasional (real) beer and game of dominoes and drives an old car. He is most at home in the outdoors, with an OS map and a compass, and in times of crisis, will take off and walk for miles in any weather.

My Review

Chris Collett author photo jpgChris Collett – Author Bio

I was born and grew up in a Norfolk seaside town, almost as far east as it’s possible to go in England without falling into the North Sea. There I worked variously in a boarding house (now defunct) a local bakery (closed down) and a crisp factory (razed to the ground). I graduated in Liverpool, then for twenty-five years taught children and young people with learning disabilities, including autism, before going into higher education as a senior lecturer.

Mindful of its reputation, I moved somewhat reluctantly to Birmingham, where I met my husband, in 1981. But just a few years later DI Tom Mariner was created to police its mean streets, and these days I relish the vibrancy and rich social history of the city. After eight outings for Mariner, I still feel as if I’ve barely scratched the surface.

Recently retired from lecturing and I’m currently luxuriating in the time I now have to continue the Mariner series, alongside published short stories and academic works. In my spare time, among other things, I’m a manuscript assessor for the Crime Writers Association.

CELEBRATE 1 MILLION COPIES SOLD

Independent publisher Joffe Books is delighted to announce author Joy Ellis has achieved book sales of 1 million copies with a further 214 million pages read in Kindle Unlimited, the equivalent to another million sales. This is the publisher’s first author to hit 1 million copies.
Ellis’s first title with Joffe Books in June 2016 was Crime on the Fens – Book 1 of the Nikki Galena series. Since then Joffe have published a further 12 books by Ellis, including Beware the Past with 132,000 copies already sold in just 3 months. In total, Ellis has achieved on Kindle 3 consecutive UK No.1’s, 11 UK Top 20’s and 2 USA TOP 10’s bestsellers. Her books have been translated into Italian by Newton Compton and released as audio books by Audible and Tantor.
Her new book, The Guilty Ones, is Book 4 of the Jackman & Evans series and will be published on 14th March.

Joy Ellis grew up and lived in Kent, trained in floristry in Mayfair and ran her own highly successful floristry business in Weybridge for many years. The 1990s recession led her to withdraw from that business and she followed her lifelong love of books, firstly by working for WH Smith until finally managing an independent bookshop in Leatherhead, Surrey.

Joy’s writing career began after she attended a course, tutored by Sue Townsend, at the Skyros Institute in the mid-nineties. She retired a few years later around the same time as her partner, Jacqueline, who had been a highly decorated police officer with Surrey police. Looking for a new home together with their two Springer spaniels, they fell under the spell of the Lincolnshire Fens, settling in a village just outside Boston.

Joy’s happy home life is far removed from her storylines, however, and while she loves living in the misty Fens, the area is steeped in superstition and provides a remote and eerie backdrop to her novels. Joy is also able to add the authenticity vital to any crime thriller by drawing on Jacqueline’s inside knowledge, to confirm procedures and the reality of tackling brutal crime and criminals in a modern police force.
Joy says, “A million sales? That comes into the category of Beyond my Wildest Dreams. How do I feel about it? Simply amazed. After decades of writing, and getting nowhere, but being too driven, or maybe too damned obstinate, to give up: this is more than special. It is also very humbling. The fact that people all over the world are reading my books and taking the time to get in contact, is a very emotional thing. And the stories they tell you, make you understand exactly why you write, and why you want to go on writing.

I always wanted to write a bestseller, surely every fiction writer does? But I never looked at the finished product from the reader/writer point of view. Now I know that my books fill someone’s lonely night, or accompany them into a hospital waiting room, or take them away (just for a little while) from something bad going on in their lives, now I know that, I feel very different, I feel like the luckiest woman in the world.

The support that I have been given, especially from my incredible publisher Joffe Books, is nothing less that inspirational and so much of this success is down to them. I’ve had so much help too from Jacqueline, my partner and in-house police procedural advisor, (and tea-maker!) And on top of that, I now have the friendship of the other wonderful authors in our ‘stable’, and that of all the tireless bloggers and reviewers that carry us along and buoy us up. This One Million is not just about me, it’s about all of us… and all of you.”

Jasper Joffe, founder of Joffe Books, says, ”Joy’s a phenomenon. She is wonderful to work with and she’s always writing. It’s amazing how her books really strike a chord with readers and a million sales is a testament to her hard work and dedication to writing brilliant mysteries. We’re proud to publish her.”

Unworthy book.jpgUNWORTHY by Stewart Giles

THE UNWORTHY WOMEN MUST PAY.

DS Jason Smith is dragged away from paternity leave when a woman is killed with her baby in the next room. When more women with children are brutally murdered, Smith discovers that they all have something in common – they all share a secret. When he finds out that the mother of his own child is on this list of ‘Unworthy’ women, he finds himself in a race against time to stop the killer before his whole world comes crashing down around him.

My Review

To my shame I have to admit that this is the first in the Smith series by Stewart Giles that I have read (although I am a big fan of his other series).  I was unsure what to expect but having loved his other books I wasn’t expecting to be disappointed and I wasn’t.  This book gripped me from the very first page and I can confirm that it works perfectly as stand alone.

Somebody is murdering mothers of small children and leaving the word UNWORTHY at the crime scene.  Why are these women unworthy and who is playing judge, jury and executioner?  Jason Smith is dragged from leave to find out.  As the murderer gets too close for comfort all bets are off as Smith becomes determined to stop this person before it is too late.

This is a real roller coaster of a book that had me turning page after page to find out what happens next.  The adrenaline keeps pumping right to the very end  where we are treated to a real shocker of an ending.

Jason Smith is a complex character and I am determined to read the previous books in this series to find out more about him.  He has a baby with Erica, who is another member of the team and is currently on maternity leave.  His superior is Bryony Brownhill and I thought there was something yet to be discovered about this woman and there are other characters I really want to learn more about.

Stewart is a brilliant author and his books are dark but also have a little humour woven in to the story to offset the darkness which makes them a real unputdownable read.

Definitely worth the 5 stars.  I will definitely be reading the back list to this series while I wait for the next book.

Stewart Giles Author PhotoAuthor Bio

After reading English & Drama at three different English Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling and finally ended up in South Africa, where I still live. I enjoy the serene life running a boat shop on the banks of the Vaal Dam. I came up with the DS Jason Smith idea after my wife dropped a rather large speaker on my head. Whether it was intentional still remains a mystery. Smith, the first in the series was finished in September 2013 and was closely followed by Boomerang and Ladybird. Occam’s Razor, Harlequin and Phobia (a series of short stories detailing Smith’s early life) were all completed in one hazy 365 days and Selene was done and dusted a few months later.

David Merchant’s body is found in a bonfire in his back garden. David was a publisher and devout Christian. Who would want to kill this seemingly very decent man?

Them, as Hillary unearths greedy business partners and an estranged son, her focus is diverted when a new team member is targeted by a vicious gang.

Hillary’s under massive pressure and will she finally crack? And if she does, where will she go from here?

This is a crime mystery full of well-observed characters, which will have you gripped from start to the absolutely thrilling conclusion.

MURDER BY FIRE is the tenth in a series of page-turning crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire.

Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

THE LOCATION
Kidlington itself, the home of Thames Valley Police HQ. Almost regarded as a suburb of Oxford, there is some debate in Kidlington whether it is a town or a village! If it’s a village, it’s a very large one, with supermarkets, garages, plenty of pubs and a small shopping centre. It sits on a plain that was once devoted to farming, with several small satellite villages around it, such as Hampton Poyle and Yarnton. It also has a small airport, once known as Oxford Airport, but recently renamed to include London in the title!

THE DETECTIVE
DI Hillary Greene
An attractive woman in her forties, Hillary Greene is a police officer of many years’ experience, and came up through the ranks. Consequently, she knows how the system works, and is fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. Popular with the rank and file for her no-nonsense attitude and competence.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “A NARROW POINT OF VIEW.”

DI HILLARY GREENE SERIES
BOOK 1: MURDER ON THE OXFORD CANAL
BOOK 2: MURDER AT THE UNIVERSITY
BOOK 3: MURDER OF THE BRIDE
BOOK 4: MURDER IN THE VILLAGE
BOOK 5: MURDER IN THE FAMILY
BOOK 6: MURDER AT HOME
BOOK 7: MURDER IN THE MEADOW
BOOK 8: MURDER IN THE MANSION
BOOK 9: MURDER IN THE GARDEN
BOOK 10: MURDER BY FIRE

My Review

This is book 10 in the ‘Murder’ series.  It would be helpful to read these in sequence as this book discusses the aftermath of Book 9 but it should work as stand alone.

A bible pushing publisher is found burning on a bonfire of his own books in his own back garden and Hillary is on the case.  Not many clues and although the man was not liked by many there are not many suspects.  The case becomes very tangled as the team try to follow the few leads they have.

Add a new team member being bullied into the mix along with the repercussions from book 9 and Hillary is struggling to cope with all the issues being piled upon her.  Keith Barrington also has his problems and with Danvers keeping his distance it seems everything is falling apart.

However, first job is to catch the murderer so onwards and upwards …..

Very believable, flawed characters that develop very well over the course of the book with enough twists and turns to ensure the reader keeps turning page after page…

Another brilliant addition to the series with an absolute shocker of an ending,

Faith Martin has been writing for over 25 years, in four genres and under four different pen names. She was born in Oxford and sets most of her crime novels within sight of the city of dreaming spires. A real nature lover and afficionado of the countryside, descriptions of wildlife and native flora often find their way into her manuscripts. Right now, JOFFE BOOKS are re-issuing the DI Hillary Greene novels in new updated editions! The first 10 books in the series are available now.
Her romance novels, written under the name of Maxine Barry, are now available from Corazon Books. IMPOSTERS In PARADISE, and HEART OF FIRE are both out, and others will very quickly become available in the future.

Her first foray into writing ‘spooky’ crime, (and written under the pen name of Jessie Daniels) comes out in November 2017. THE LAVENDER LADY CASEFILE is published by Robert Hale, an imprint of Crowood Press.

As Joyce Cato, she writes more classically-inspired ‘proper’ whodunits. So if you like an amateur sleuth, plenty of clues and red herrings, plus a baffling murder mystery to solve, these are the books for you.
