MURDER AT HOME by Faith Martin
Looking for a brilliant best-selling murder mystery with a feisty female detective?
Then meet DI HILLARY GREENE, a policewoman struggling to save her career and catch criminals.
Flo Jenkins is found murdered in her armchair, a paperknife sticking out of her chest. The old woman was well liked and nothing seems to have been stolen from her home. And it was common knowledge that she only had weeks to live.
Why kill a dying woman? This is going to be one of the toughest cases yet for Hillary to solve.
Hillary also has to deal with a new colleague who has a terrible temper and a rocky past.
With no forensics, no leads, and only a drug-addict nephew as a suspect, will this be Hillary’s first failure to solve a murder?
This is a crime mystery full of well-observed characters, which will have you gripped from start to finish.
MURDER AT HOME is the sixth in a series of page-turning crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire.
Set in the town of Bicester. England is famous for its picturesque and unique market towns, many of which date back to the Middle Ages, or even further. Traditionally, they were places where farmers met to trade livestock, buy supplies and sell their arable goods. Nowadays, modern markets are often still held in the streets, and in Bicester, where this novel is set, a ‘street market’ happens every Friday. The main street is in fact called Sheep Street, and a modern sculpture of a cluster of sheep pays tribute to the town’s history. Often these old market towns are lined with architecture that spans the centuries — from timber-framed Elizabeth houses, through to the classical lines beloved of the Georgians, to the more ornate houses favoured by the Victorians. Quiet, attractive and often full of character, these old market towns are very desirable places to live.
DI Hillary Greene
An attractive woman in her forties, Hillary Greene is a police officer of many years’ experience, and came up through the ranks. Consequently, she knows how the system works, and is fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. She is a long-standing friend of her immediate superior officer, ‘Mellow’ Mallow and enjoys a rather enigmatic relationship with the steely Superintendent Marcus Donleavy. Popular with the rank and file for her no-nonsense attitude and competence.
DCI Philip ‘Mellow’ Mallow
Mel appreciates Hillary’s first-rate ability to solve her cases, and isn’t happy about her harassment by the officers from York. Known for his sartorial elegance and laid-back manners, he has a sharp mind, and an eye for the ladies. A good friend and ally for Hillary in her recent tribulations, he’s determined to keep his best investigator focused on the problems at hand.

This is book 6 in the Hillary Greene series and it just gets better. I absolutely love Hillary her character is realistic with depth that increases with each book. She is loved by everyone except the baddies. She gets results. Sometimes it takes a little longer but she gets there. She is protective of her team and in return she earns their loyalty and together they function excellently.
The story begins with the death of an old lady. She was arranging her birthday party and looking forward to Christmas and someone ended that and Hillary is on a mission to find out who.
There are many twists and turns as the obvious suspect doesn’t fit for Hillary and the obnoxious Frank Ross is on a mission to make him fit. It wont end well for someone. It is towards the end that the pieces begin to slot together.
Faith is a brilliant story teller as she grabs the reader at the beginning and doesn’t let go. The descriptive text puts the scene perfectly in the readers’ mind I can still see Hillary as she gets her ‘light bulb’ moment and the new member of the team looks on in shock while Janine just smiles as she has seen it before many times. Absolute skill I love it.
I was very disappointed that Tommy has moved on as I loved him and now it appears Janine is going too sigh…. The newbie is looking good for an interesting character and I am sure Frank will be around to bug the team for a while yet.
Definitely worth the 5 stars. Book 7 NOW please!
Faith Martin has been writing for over 25 years, in four genres and under four different pen names. She was born in Oxford and sets most of her crime novels within sight of the city of dreaming spires. A real nature lover and afficionado of the countryside, descriptions of wildlife and native flora often find their way into her manuscripts. Right now, JOFFE BOOKS are re-issuing the first eleven of the DI Hillary Greene novels in new updated editions! And the first 4 of these, MURDER ON THE OXFORD CANAL, MURDER AT THE UNIVERSITY, MURDER OF THE BRIDE and MURDER IN THE VILLAGE are available now, with the others to very quickly follow.
Her romance novels, written under the name of Maxine Barry, are now available from Corazon Books. IMPOSTERS In PARADISE, and HEART OF FIRE are both out, and others will very quickly become available in the future.
Her first foray into writing ‘spooky’ crime, (and written under the pen name of Jessie Daniels) comes out in November 2017. THE LAVENDER LADY CASEFILE is published by Robert Hale, an imprint of Crowood Press.
As Joyce Cato, she writes more classically-inspired ‘proper’ whodunits. So if you like an amateur sleuth, plenty of clues and red herrings, plus a baffling murder mystery to solve, these are the books for you.
