Soon these two families will collide and the consequences might just be fatal…

My Review

This book sets the pace from the beginning with the prologue and the suspense grows throughout the book. Much of the book is told from the perspective of an 8 year old child and this had me remembering my daughters at that age. Joya’s character develops throughout the book as we are given a window into the mind of an 8 year old. She is a totally lovable little girl and I am so pleased to have met her.

The book revolves around 2 families; Maxine and Stu who are parents to Joya and also have Vee, Maxine’s Mum who is terminally ill with Huntington’s disease. Next door live Ashley and Leo who have Maxine’s Mum living in their annex. The characters of all these adults develops throughout the book into complex individuals each with their own issues.

The story begins near the end with a dead body and then goes back to where it all began and we learn of the events and issues that lead death. The book discusses the effects of Huntington’s disease not only on the sufferer but also the knock-on effect on other members of the family. Next door we have Ashley who has grown to hate her mother due to an event when she was a teenager.

I loved the characters of Vee and Joya but didn’t much like the other characters as they seemed to be very selfish people and a bit unrealistic which lost the book a few points.

A very good read and I thank Bloodhound Books for the ARC
