When more women with children are brutally murdered, Smith discovers that they all have something in common – they all share a secret. When he finds out that the mother of his own child is on this list of ‘Unworthy’ women, he finds himself in a race against time to stop the killer before his whole world comes crashing down around him.

My Review

This book gripped me from the very first page and I can confirm that it works perfectly as stand alone.

Somebody is murdering mothers of small children and leaving the word UNWORTHY at the crime scene.  Why are these women unworthy and who is playing judge, jury and executioner?  Jason Smith is dragged from leave to find out.  As the murderer gets too close for comfort all bets are off as Smith becomes determined to stop this person before it is too late.

This is a real roller coaster of a book that had me turning page after page to find out what happens next.  The adrenaline keeps pumping right to the very end  where we are treated to a real shocker of an ending.

Jason Smith has grown and developed throughout the series into a complex, realistic character.  He has a baby with Erica, who is another member of the team and is currently on maternity leave.  His superior is Bryony Brownhill and I am sure there is a lot yet to be discovered about this character.

Stewart is a brilliant author and his books are dark but also have a little humour woven in to the story to offset the darkness which makes them a real unputdownable read.

Definitely worth the 5 stars. I am really looking forward to the next book which is book 1 in a new series featuring Jason Smith and also Harriet Taylor from Stewart’s other series.

THE SETTING

York is a historic walled city in North Yorkshire, England.

At the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss, York is the traditional county town of the historic county of Yorkshire. York Minster and a variety of cultural and sporting activities make it a popular tourist destination.

THE DETECTIVES

DS Jason Smith is an Australian who was sent to York to live with his Grandmother when his sister disappeared from a beach.  He has suffered many losses in his short life and is now a dedicated detective.  He is a bit of a loose cannon he has his own way of doing things and that doesn’t always mean following orders and procedures.

DC Erica Witton is Jason’s preferred partner they work well together and share a bond.  She isn’t always appreciated by Jason, but they care about each other and that brings a different dimension to the series.

What readers are saying about Unworthy:

There are more twists and turns in the stories than an alpine road. The characters are brilliantly written and a dark humour is always present but, the main plot is always well thought out and the suspense drags you right to the end.James oneill

Always a good read. Great characters. The ending is intriguing and I’m looking forward to the next in the series to see how things develop.WarrenC

“Unworthy” just got better and better; I loved the twists and turns, and I didn’t want it to end. There’s an App for that!

Another great story with the usual characters and much more. Read the series in order to get the best effect.Thompson V

Stewart Giles – Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live. After Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later. 3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series. The Beekeeper hit the shelves and hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well. The third in the series, The Backpacker I have self-published and is now available.
