Her last breathHer Last Breath by Charlie Gallagher

Available from Amazon

Discover a crime thriller which will have you gripped from the explosive start to one of the most shocking endings of the year.

Henry Roberts is a serial killer. He has a type — young, blonde, attractive women. He is three years into a life sentence.

Two of his victims were never found.

Now, Henry Roberts is dying. He wants to make a deal. Move him to a secure unit by the sea and he will tell the police where the other victims’ remains are.

The offer is accepted and Detective George Elms travels to the force who led the original investigation. He is the messenger. He finds a police force and a community still shattered. As he reviews the old case notes he also learns something else. Henry Roberts didn’t work alone.

A woman goes missing. She fits the profile of the other victims. The circumstances of her disappearance do too — she never made it from her commuter train to her car.

Then a second woman goes missing. George is convinced they are linked. Henry Roberts told him on his prison visit that two is better because: you can make the other one watch.

Time running out for George. He is convinced that Henry Roberts knows who he should be chasing, but will he help before he takes his last breath? Or the women take theirs?

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Mark Billingham.

My Review

This is a stand-alone book featuring the lovable George Elms.

I have read several George Elms books and the character has grown on me until he is an addiction and I need to read about him on a regular basis so I really hope this is not the last I hear of him.

Once again George is handed the crap nobody else wants. What is unusual this time, however, is that a terminally ill serial killer, of young women, who was locked up a few years ago wants to give up the location of 2 missing bodies. George had nothing to do with this case so he has no idea why he should be ‘the chosen one’.

He sets off to Symonds Yat a remote village in the middle of beautiful countryside that has known horrors that nobody could imagine. The trauma of the case has had long-term effects on the team that investigated and the lead detective resigned and lost himself in a bottle. George is not welcomed and the general opinion is that he has turned up with a big tub of salt to pour in open wounds and the secrecy around him being there doesn’t help.

George learns that there was a slight hint that Henry was not working alone. Then another girl goes missing…….

This is not a book for the faint hearted the murder method is particularly gruesome but for sadistic souls like me, that love the adrenaline pumping gore and pain that keep the pages turning this book definitely delivers. It is fast-paced despite the problems everyone has finding a way forward.

Then George’s biggest fear is realised and the everyone is racing against time to find the answers before it is too late.

Once again Charlie Gallagher has delivered a book that keeps me turning page after page and holding my breath willing George on to do what he does best and find the bad guys.

What is different about this book is that Charlie has given George the chance of happiness interwoven into his worse case yet. Will George be back? I certainly hope.

Definitely 5 golden stars from me. Keep ’em coming Charlie.
